    Day-ahead allocation of operation reserve in composite power systems with large-scale centralized wind farms

    This paper focuses on the day-ahead allocation of operation reserve considering wind power prediction error and network transmission constraints in a composite power system. A two-level model that solves the allocation problem is presented. The upper model allocates operation reserve among subsystems from the economic point of view. In the upper model, transmission constraints of tielines are formulated to represent limited reserve support from the neighboring system due to wind power fluctuation. The lower model evaluates the system on the reserve schedule from the reliability point of view. In the lower model, the reliability evaluation of composite power system is performed by using Monte Carlo simulation in a multi-area system. Wind power prediction errors and tieline constraints are incorporated. The reserve requirements in the upper model are iteratively adjusted by the resulting reliability indices from the lower model. Thus, the reserve allocation is gradually optimized until the system achieves the balance between reliability and economy.     Recent developments in the field of biophotonics facilitate the raise of interest to inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) doped with Nd 3+ ions, because of their near-infrared (NIR) absorption. These NPs are interesting bioimaging probes for deep tissue visualization, while they can also act as local thermometers in biological tissues. Despite the good possibilities for visualization of NPs with Nd 3+ ions in NIR spectral range, difficulties arise when studying the cellular uptake of these NPs using commercially available fluorescence microscopy systems, since the selection of suitable luminescence detectors is limited. However, Nd 3+ ions are able to convert NIR radiation into visible light, showing upconversion properties. In this paper we found optimal parameters to excite upconversion luminescence of Nd 3+ :LaF 3 NPs in living cells and to compare the distribution of the NPs inside the cell culture of human macrophages THP-1 obtained by two methods.     Meso- and macrozooplankton communities in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica

    The present paper describes composition and abundance of meso- and macrozooplankton in the epipelagic zone of the Weddell Sea and gives a systematic review of encountered species regarding results of earlier expeditions. Material was sampled from 6 February to 10 March 1983 from RV Polarstern with a RMT 1+8 m (320 and 4500 μm mesh size). In agreement with topography and water mass distribution three distinct communities were defined, clearly separated by cluster analysis: The Southern Shelf Community has lowest abundances (approx. 9000 ind./1000 m3). Euphausia crystallorophias and Metridia gerlachei are predominating. Compared with the low overall abundance the number of regularly occurring species is high (55) due to many neritic forms. Herbivores and omnivores are dominating (58% and 35%). The North-eastern Shelf Community has highest abundances (about 31 000 ind./1000 m3). It is predominated by copepodites I–III of Calanus propinquus and Calanoides acutus (61%). The faunal composition is characterized by both oceanic and neritic species (64). Fine-filter feeders are prevailing (65%). The Oceanic Community has a mean abundance of approximately 23 000 ind./1000 m3, consisting of 61 species. Dominances are not as pronounced as in the shelf communities. Apart from abundant species like Calanus propinquus, Calanoides acutus, Metridia gerlachei, Oithona spp. and Oncaea spp. many typical inhabitants of the Eastwind Drift are encountered. All feeding types have about the same importance in the Oceanic Community

    Computation of bifurcation boundaries for power systems: A new Delta-plane method

    This paper is devoted to the problems of finding the load flow feasibility, saddle node, and Hopf bifurcation boundaries in the space of power system parameters. The first part contains a review of the existing relevant approaches including not-so-well-known contributions from Russia. The second part presents a new robust method for finding the power system load flow feasibility boundary on the plane defined by any three vectors of dependent variables (nodal voltages), called the Delta plane. The method exploits some quadratic and linear properties of the load now equations and state matrices written in rectangular coordinates. An advantage of the method is that it does not require an iterative solution of nonlinear equations (except the eigenvalue problem). In addition to benefits for visualization, the method is a useful tool for topological studies of power system multiple solution structures and stability domains. Although the power system application is developed, the method can be equally efficient for any quadratic algebraic problem

    A General Method for Small Signal Stability

    This paper presents a new general method for computing the different specific power system small signal stability conditions. The conditions include the points of minimum and maximum damping of oscillations, saddle node and Hopf bifurcations, and load flow feasibility boundaries. All these characteristic points are located by optimizing an eigenvalue objective function along the rays specified in the space of system parameters. The set of constraints consists of the load flow equations, and requirements applied to the dynamic state matrix eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Solutions of the optimization problem correspond to specific points of interest mentioned above. So, the proposed general method gives a comprehensive characterization of the power system small signal stability properties. The specific point obtained depends upon the initial guess of variables and numerical methods used to solve the constrained optimization problem. The technique is tested by analyzing the small signal stability properties for well-known example systems.link_to_subscribed_fulltex

    Stabilization of transient processes in power systems by an eigenvalue shift approach

    A new approach to stabilize power system transient processes is presented. It uses the idea that left shifts of the dominant state matrix eigenvalues, computed along the integral trajectory, will provide better damping of the resulting transient processes. Those shifts are made by varying the power system controllable parameters in the direction of maximal joint displacement of selected (dominant) eigenvalues.     Properties of quadratic equations and their application to power system analysis

    A number of facts about quadratic algebraic problems and applied Newton-Raphson like methods are presented. The main results are about solution structure, loading trajectories, load flow feasibility boundaries and Newton-Raphson solutions. Various practically important applications of these properties are discussed.
