An amperometric glucose biosensor based on a MnO2/graphene composite modified electrode
In this paper, a novel composite of graphene/MnO2 (GR/MnO2) was successfully synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized MnO2 and the composite were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that MnO2 was nanorods and the two materials were perfectly composited. The composite was decorated on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and used for the entrapment of glucose oxidase (GOD). Electrochemical results showed that the
composite modified electrode showed a pair of well-defined redox peaks, and the direct electron transfer between GOD and the electrode surface was accelerated. The sensor fabricated by the composite modified electrode showed an excellent response to the oxidation of glucose with a wide
linear range (0.04 to 2 mM), low detection limit (10 mM), and high sensitivity (3.3 mA mM-1 cm-2). The sensor also exhibited excellent reproducibility, stability and selectivity, and it can be used in the determination of glucose in real samples
Late cardioprotection of exercise preconditioning against exhaustive exercise-induced myocardial injury by up-regulatation of connexin 43 expression in rat hearts
AbstractObjectiveTo investigate the expression of myocardium connexin 43 (Cx43) in late exercise preconditioning (LEP) cardioprotection.MethodsEight-week-old adult male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned into four groups (n = 8). Myocardial injury was judged in accordance with serum levels of cTnâ… and NT-proBNP as well as hematoxylin basicfuchsin picric acid staining of myocardium. Cx43 mRNA was detected by in situ hybridization and qualified by real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR. Cx43 protein was localized by immunohistochemistry and its expression level was determined by western blotting.ResultsThe LEP obviously attenuated the myocardial ischemia/hypoxia injury caused by exhaustive exercise. There was no significant difference of Cx43 mRNA level between the four groups. Cx43 protein level was decreased significantly in group EE (P < 0.05). However, LEP produced a significant increase in Cx43 protein level (P < 0.05), and the decreased Cx43 protein level in exhaustive exercise was significantly up-regulated by LEP (P < 0.05).ConclusionsLEP protects rat heart against exhaustive exercise-induced myocardial injury by up-regulating the expression of myocardial Cx43
Dynamic spatiotemporal trends of imported dengue fever in Australia.
Dengue fever (DF) epidemics in Australia are caused by infected international travellers and confined to Northern Queensland where competent vectors exist. Recent analyses suggest that global trade and climate change could lead to the re-establishment of Ae. aegypti across the country and promote the spread of dengue nationally. This study aimed to describe the dynamic spatiotemporal trends of imported DF cases and their origins, identify the current and potential future high-risk regions and locate areas that might be at particular risk of dengue transmission should competent mosquito vectors expand their range. Our results showed that the geographical distribution of imported DF cases has significantly expanded in mainland Australia over the past decade. In recent years, the geographical distribution of source countries of DF has expanded from the Pacific region and Asia to include Africa and the Americas. Australia is now exposed to dengue importations from all of the regions involved in the current global pandemic. The public health implications of a range expansion of dengue mosquito vectors are severe. Enhanced mosquito surveillance in those areas that have high imported cases is called for to reduce emerging threats from this globally expanding pathogen
SnapFusion: Text-to-Image Diffusion Model on Mobile Devices within Two Seconds
Text-to-image diffusion models can create stunning images from natural
language descriptions that rival the work of professional artists and
photographers. However, these models are large, with complex network
architectures and tens of denoising iterations, making them computationally
expensive and slow to run. As a result, high-end GPUs and cloud-based inference
are required to run diffusion models at scale. This is costly and has privacy
implications, especially when user data is sent to a third party. To overcome
these challenges, we present a generic approach that, for the first time,
unlocks running text-to-image diffusion models on mobile devices in less than
seconds. We achieve so by introducing efficient network architecture and
improving step distillation. Specifically, we propose an efficient UNet by
identifying the redundancy of the original model and reducing the computation
of the image decoder via data distillation. Further, we enhance the step
distillation by exploring training strategies and introducing regularization
from classifier-free guidance. Our extensive experiments on MS-COCO show that
our model with denoising steps achieves better FID and CLIP scores than
Stable Diffusion v with steps. Our work democratizes content creation

Treatment of visual axis opacification and secondary membranes with Nd:YAG laser after pediatric cataract surgery under intranasal sedation
PurposeTo describe neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser treatment of visual axis opacification and secondary membranes in pediatric patients with cataracts under intranasal dexmedetomidine sedation.MethodsTwenty eyes of 17 patients with secondary membrane formation after cataract extraction were enrolled in this study. Intranasal dexmedetomidine sedation (3 ug/kg) was administered, and Nd:YAG laser (Ellex Super Q, Adelaide, Australia) procedures were performed with children in the sitting position with their chin supported on a laser delivery slit lamp. Preoperative and postoperative visual acuities were documented, and medical records were reviewed.ResultsThe age of the patients ranged from 5 to 83 months (31.82 ± 27.73). Nineteen (95.0%) eyes had congenital cataracts and one (5.0%) had a traumatic cataract. Nd:YAG laser treatment of VAO with ten (50.0%) eyes, pupillary membranes with three (15.0%) eyes, pupillary cortical proliferation with six (30.0%) eyes, and anterior capsule contraction with one (5.0%) eye. Five (25.0%) eyes demonstrated visual acuity improvement, whereas six (30.0%) eyes remained unchanged after laser treatment. The recurrence rate was 30.0% and four eyes underwent a second Nd:YAG membranectomy. No side effects or tolerances due to sedative drugs were observed.ConclusionNd:YAG laser membranectomy under intranasal dexmedetomidine sedation was safely performed in children as young as 5 months old in a sitting position. This approach facilitates patient convenience, doctor proficiency, and cost reductions. Patients with recurrence can be treated by repeating the procedure
