Tuning Locality of Pair Coherence in Graphene-based Andreev Interferometers
We report on gate-tuned locality of superconductivity-induced phase-coherent magnetoconductance oscillations in a graphene-based Andreev interferometer, consisting of a T-shaped graphene bar in contact with a superconducting Al loop. The conductance oscillations arose from the flux change through the superconducting Al loop, with gate-dependent Fraunhofer-type modulation of the envelope. We confirm a transitional change in the character of the pair coherence, between local and nonlocal, in the same device as the effective length-to-width ratio of the device was modulated by tuning the pair-coherence length xi(T) in the graphene layer.open1133sciescopu
Characterization of Fine Particulate Matter and Associations between Particulate Chemical Constituents and Mortality in Seoul, Korea
Background: Numerous studies have linked fine particles [≤ 2.5 µm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5)] and health. Most studies focused on the total mass of the particles, although the chemical composition of the particles varies substantially. Which chemical components of fine particles that are the most harmful is not well understood, and research on the chemical composition of PM2.5 and the components that are the most harmful is particularly limited in Asia
Aging Logarithmic Conformal Field Theory : a holographic view
We consider logarithmic extensions of the correlation and response functions
of scalar operators for the systems with aging as well as Schr\"odinger
symmetry. Aging is known to be the simplest nonequilibrium phenomena, and its
physical significances can be understood by the two-time correlation and
response functions. Their logarithmic part is completely fixed by the bulk
geometry in terms of the conformal weight of the dual operator and the dual
particle number.
Motivated by recent experimental realizations of Kardar-Parisi-Zhang
universality class in growth phenomena and its subsequent theoretical extension
to aging, we investigate our two-time correlation functions out of equilibrium,
which show several qualitatively different behaviors depending on the
parameters in our theory. They exhibit either growing or aging, i.e. power-law
decaying, behaviors for the entire range of our scaling time. Surprisingly, for
some parameter ranges, they exhibit growing at early times as well as aging at
later times.Comment: 1+26 pages, 15 figure
Holographic Renormalization and Stress Tensors in New Massive Gravity
We obtain holographically renormalized boundary stress tensors with the
emphasis on a special point in the parameter space of three dimensional new
massive gravity, using the so-called Fefferman-Graham coordinates with relevant
counter terms. Through the linearized equations of motion with a standard
prescription, we also obtain correlators among these stress tensors. We argue
that the self-consistency of holographic renormalization determines counter
terms up to unphysical ambiguities. Using these renormalized stress tensors in
Fefferman-Graham coordinates, we obtain the central charges of dual CFT, and
mass and angular momentum of some black hole solutions. These results are
consistent with the previous ones obtained by other methods. In this study on
the Fefferman-Graham expansion of new massive gravity, some aspects of higher
curvature gravity are revealed.Comment: Version accepted for publication in JHEP, conclusion revised,

Spontaneous Eosinophilic Nasal Inflammation in a Genetically-Mutant Mouse: Comparative Study with an Allergic Inflammation Model
Background: Eosinophilic inflammation is a hallmark of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. To model this disease process experimentally, nasal sensitization of mice with ovalbumin or aspergillus has been described. Here, we describe a genetically mutant mouse that develops robust spontaneous nasal eosinophilic inflammation. These mice lack the enzyme SHP-1 that down-regulates the IL-4Ra/stat6 signaling pathway. We compared nasal inflammation and inflammatory mediators in SHP-1 deficient mice (mev) and an ovalbumin-induced nasal allergy model. Methods: A novel technique of trans-pharyngeal nasal lavage was developed to obtain samples of inflammatory cells from the nasal passages of allergic and mev mice. Total and differential cell counts were performed on cytospin preparations. Expression of tissue mRNA for IL-4, IL-13, and mouse beta-defensin-1 (MBD-1) was determined by quantitative PCR. Eotaxin in the lavage fluid was assessed by ELISA. Results: Allergic and mev mice had increased total cells and eosinophils compared with controls. Expression of IL-4 was similarly increased in both allergic and mev mice, but expression of IL-13 and eotaxin was significantly greater in the allergic mice than mev mice. Eotaxin was significantly up-regulated in both allergic rhinitis and mev mice. In both models of eosinophilic inflammation, down-regulation of the innate immune marker MBD-1 was observed. Conclusions: The mev mice display spontaneous chronic nasal eosinophilic inflammation with potential utility for chroni
Noncritical Einstein-Weyl Gravity and the AdS/CFT Correspondence
We explore four-dimensional Einstein-Weyl gravity and supergravity on anti-de
Sitter spacetime. For a specific range of the coupling with appropriate
boundary conditions, we show the effective equivalence of the theory with
Einstein gravity and AdS supergravity at the quadratic Lagrangian level.
Furthermore we show that these equivalences can be promoted to the full
nonlinear level. We also show that the similar behavior holds for the
generalized Gibbons-Hawking terms. From this we find that the correlation
functions in the dual conformal field theory of Einstein-Weyl gravity and
supergravity can be readily read off from corresponding ones from Einstein
gravity and AdS supergravity. We also give comments on some issues in critical
gravity and supergravity as well as conformal gravity and supergravity.Comment: 20 pages, 1 figure: v2, references and footnote added, typos

Acaricidal and oviposition deterring effects of santalol identified in sandalwood oil against two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae)
Thirty-four plant essential oils were screened for their acaricidal and oviposition deterrent activities against two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), in the laboratory using a leaf-dip bioassay. From initial trials, sandalwood and common thyme oils were observed to be the most effective against TSSM adult females. Subsequent trials confirmed that only sandalwood oil was significantly active (87.2 ± 2.9% mortality) against TSSM adult females. Sandalwood oil also demonstrated oviposition deterring effects based on a 89.3% reduction of the total number of eggs on leaf disks treated with the oil. GC–MS analysis revealed that the main components of the sandalwood oil were α-santalol (45.8%), β-santalol (20.6%), β-sinensal (9.4%), and epi-β-santalol (3.3%). A mixture of α- and β-santalol (51.0:22.9, respectively) produced significantly higher mortality (85.5 ± 2.9%) and oviposition deterrent effects (94.7% reduction in the number of eggs) than the control. Phytotoxicity was not shown on rose shoots to which a 0.1% solution of sandalwood oil was applied
Rosmarinic Acid, Active Component of Dansam-Eum Attenuates Ototoxicity of Cochlear Hair Cells through Blockage of Caspase-1 Activity
Cisplatin causes auditory impairment due to the apoptosis of auditory hair cells. There is no strategy to regulate ototoxicity by cisplatin thus far. Dansam-Eum (DSE) has been used for treating the central nerve system injury including hearing loss in Korea. However, disease-related scientific investigation by DSE has not been elucidated. Here, we demonstrated that DSE and its component rosmarinic acid (RA) were shown to inhibit apoptosis of the primary organ of Corti explants as well as the auditory cells. Administration of DSE and RA reduced the thresholds of the auditory brainstem response in cisplatin-injected mice. A molecular docking simulation and a kinetic assay show that RA controls the activity of caspase-1 by interaction with the active site of caspase-1. Pretreatment of RA inhibited caspase-1 downstream signal pathway, such as the activation of caspase-3 and 9, release of cytochrome c, translocation of apoptosis-inducing factor, up-regulation of Bax, down-regulation of Bcl-2, generation of reactive oxygen species, and activation of nuclear factor-κB. Anticancer activity by cisplatin was not affected by treatment with RA in SNU668, A549, HCT116, and HeLa cells but not B16F10 cells. These findings show that blocking a critical step by RA in apoptosis may be useful strategy to prevent harmful side effects of ototoxicity in patients with having to undergo chemotherapy
Aberrant Regulation of HDAC2 Mediates Proliferation of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells by Deregulating Expression of G1/S Cell Cycle Proteins
Histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) is crucial for embryonic development, affects cytokine signaling relevant for immune responses and is often significantly overexpressed in solid tumors; but little is known about its role in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this study, we showed that targeted-disruption of HDAC2 resulted in reduction of both tumor cell growth and de novo DNA synthesis in Hep3B cells. We then demonstrated that HDAC2 regulated cell cycle and that disruption of HDAC2 caused G1/S arrest in cell cycle. In G1/S transition, targeted-disruption of HDAC2 selectively induced the expression of p16INK4A and p21WAF1/Cip1, and simultaneously suppressed the expression of cyclin D1, CDK4 and CDK2. Consequently, HDAC2 inhibition led to the down-regulation of E2F/DP1 target genes through a reduction in phosphorylation status of pRb protein. In addition, sustained suppression of HDAC2 attenuated in vitro colony formation and in vivo tumor growth in a mouse xenograft model. Further, we found that HDAC2 suppresses p21WAF1/Cip1 transcriptional activity via Sp1-binding site enriched proximal region of p21WAF1/Cip1 promoter. In conclusion, we suggest that the aberrant regulation of HDAC2 may play a pivotal role in the development of HCC through its regulation of cell cycle components at the transcription level providing HDAC2 as a relevant target in liver cancer therapy
