Soft Supersymmetry Breaking at Heavy Chiral Threshold
We discuss the structure of threshold corrections to soft
supersymmetry-breaking parameters at the mass threshold of heavy chiral
superfields. Nontrivial dependence on soft parameters of heavy matter fields
originates from the `physical' definition of the threshold scale, at which the
general form of soft supersymmetry breaking is derived in the superfield
coupling formalism.Comment: 7 pages, no figur
Geometry-Driven Shift in the Tomonaga-Luttinger Exponent of Deformed Cylinders
We demonstrate the effects of geometric perturbation on the
Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) states in a long, thin, hollow cylinder whose
radius varies periodically. The variation in the surface curvature inherent to
the system gives rise to a significant increase in the power-law exponent of
the single-particle density of states. The increase in the TLL exponent is
caused by a curvature-induced potential that attracts low-energy electrons to
region that has large curvature.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Alteration of phospholipid at various growth phases of Escherichia coli
By inoculating E. coli B into the semisynthetic medium we conducted shaking culture, and observed alterations of the total phospholipid contents and the amounts of individual phospholipid components in various stages of growth. The results are briefly summarized as follows.
1. The total phospholipid content has been found to be greater during early culture period, while it decreases as the growth age advances.
2. Phosphatidyl ethanolamine gradually increase as the culture period approaches the stationary phase.
3. Phosphatidic acid and phosphatidyl glycerol decrease precipitously as growth age advances.
4. Cardiolipin shows the maximum content in the middle log phase when the growth rate is most speedy.</p
Bendamustine Plus Rituximab as Salvage Treatment for Patients with Relapsed or Refractory Low-grade B-cell Lymphoma and Mantle Cell Lymphoma: A Single-Center Retrospective Study
Bendamustine plus rituximab (B-R) is an effective therapy for relapsed or refractory (r/r) low-grade B-cell lymphoma (LGBCL) and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL); however, clinical data from Japanese patients treated with B-R therapy are limited. We retrospectively evaluated the efficacy and safety of B-R therapy in 42 patients who received B-R therapy at our hospital for r/r LGBCL and MCL. All patients received intravenous (IV) ritux-imab 375 mg/m2 on day 1 and IV bendamustine 90 mg/m2 on days 2 and 3 every 28 days for up to 6 cycles. The common histologic subtypes were follicular lymphoma (n = 29, 70%), marginal zone lymphoma (n = 6, 14%), and MCL (n = 5, 12%). The overall response rate was 93%, with 62% complete response and complete response unconfirmed. The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 38 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 24.6 to not reached [NR]), and the median overall survival (OS) was 80 months (95% CI, 60.7 to NR). Patients receiving a cumulative dose of bendamustine ≥ 720 mg/m2 showed a significantly longer PFS and OS. Grade 3/4 adverse events (≥ 10%) included neutropenia (55%), lymphopenia (69%), and nausea (24%). B-R therapy was effective and well tolerated, and the cumulative dose of bendamustine was associated with a favorable outcome
Development of syngeneic monoclonal anti-idiotype antibodies to mouse monoclonal anti-asialoglycoprotein receptor antibody.
Anti-idiotype antibodies (Ab2) play an important role in the homeostasis of immune responses and are related to the development and the disease activity of certain autoimmune diseases. The asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPR) is considered one of the target antigens in the pathogenesis of autoimmune chronic active hepatitis (AIH). We previously developed a mouse monoclonal antibody (clone 8D7) which recognizes rat and human ASGPR. In this study, to help investigate the anti-ASGPR antibody-anti-idiotype antibody network in patients with AIH, we developed a syngeneic mouse monoclonal Ab2 to the 8D7 anti-ASGPR antibody (Ab1). One clone, designated as 3C8, tested positive for specific reactivity to 8D7-Ab1 and did not bind to other irrelevant immunoglobulins. By competitive inhibition assays, the binding of 8D7-Ab1 to liver membrane extracts, i.e., the crude antigen preparation, was inhibited by 3C8-Ab2 in a dose-dependent manner, and the binding of 8D7-Ab1 to 3C8-Ab2 was inhibited by the liver membrane extracts. In the immunohistochemical analysis, 3C8-Ab2 blocked the specific staining of sinusoidal margins of rat hepatocytes by 8D7-Ab1. These results suggest that 3C8 anti-idiotype antibody recognizes the specific idiotypic determinants within the antigen-binding site of 8D7-Ab1.</p
The OVAL experiment: A new experiment to measure vacuum magnetic birefringence using high repetition pulsed magnets
A new experiment to measure vacuum magnetic birefringence (VMB), the OVAL
experiment, is reported. We developed an original pulsed magnet that has a high
repetition rate and applies the strongest magnetic field among VMB experiments.
The vibration isolation design and feedback system enable the direct
combination of the magnet with a Fabry-P\'erot cavity. To ensure the searching
potential, a calibration measurement with dilute nitrogen gas and a prototype
search for vacuum magnetic birefringence are performed. Based on the results, a
strategy to observe vacuum magnetic birefringence is reported.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure
Microendoscopic Excision of Osteoid Osteoma in the Pedicle of the Third Lumbar Vertebra
We present a rare case of a patient who underwent complete microendoscopic excision of an osteoid osteoma, which induced radiculopathy without nerve root compression. A 20-year-old man presented severe right groin pain that was temporarily relieved by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed typical features of a nidus located in the inferior cortex of the right L3 pedicle. We performed surgery using a posterior microendoscopic approach. We drilled vertically along the line of the cortex of the caudal pedicle using a high-speed drill. After identifying the tumor, en bloc resection of the nidus was achieved. Immediately after surgery, pain in the right groin disappeared. A CT scan showed that most of the right L3 pedicle remained. This minimally invasive technique preserves spinal structures, including the facet and pedicle, and is a viable option for the treatment of spinal osteoid osteomas located close to vital structures
Crystallization characteristics of amorphous trehalose dried from alcohol
Trehalose forms a glass that can be used to preserve labile substances under desiccation. The crystallization characteristics, namely crystallization temperature (Tcry) and isothermal crystallization behavior of amorphous trehalose, dried from alcohol (methanol, ethanol), was analyzed and the results were compared with those for the amorphous trehalose freeze-dried from water. The use of alcohol as a solvent lowered the Tcry from 184 ± 6 °C for the case of an aqueous solvent to 103 ± 5 °C/methanol and 120 ± 8 °C/ethanol. The formation of multiple forms of crystals and partial melting were suggested by the thermal analysis. Isothermal crystallization experiments showed that the alcohol-originated amorphous trehalose was eventually exclusively converted into β-form crystals. The induction period (tind) before the start of isothermal crystallization was markedly shortened when alcohol was used as the solvent compared to water. The tind values for various amorphous sugar samples including the alcohol-originated ones could be correlated with difference between Tcry and the sample temperature
