    Impacts of Topographical Features and Agricultural Landuse Practices on the Farmlands Damaged by the Mid Niigata Prefecture Earthquke

    The Mid Niigata Prefecture Earthquake (MNPE) has brought about immense damages to the Japanese traditional agricultural community. The study area is well known for its landslide vulnerability, and lies on the active fault zone that divides the Japanese Island. Study was carried out at Yamakoshi Village, an intermountain agricultural region that is situated above the fault plane. Field surveys, interpretation of high-resolution aerial photos and analysis of local topography using high-resolution DEM data were performed for the study area. Following results were obtained by investigating the relationship between local topography and agricultural landuse practices, and earthquake led damages on agricultural fields. Damaged area is a hilly mountainous area where complex formation of small ridges and valleys are present. In such places, harnessing local topography, a traditional complex farming: arrangements of paddy terrace and carp-breeding ponds alternately or block-wise, have been adopted. Sediment disasters led by the earthquake are predominant in the area. Damages are more severe and significant at paddy terraces and carp-breeding ponds that were constructed at depression (concavity) of the valleys. The damages are further escalated by snow and snow run off that presumably occurred during the following winter after the MNPE. In the context of local topography of the study area, agricultural lands with favorable soil and water conditions tend to have high potentiality for earthquake sufferings. Developments on agricultural landuse planning that help in bringing disaster prevention are required.     82歳女.主訴は排尿困難と残尿感.膀胱底部から尿道周囲にかけて鶏卵大の腫瘤を認め, 生検で非ホジキンリンパ腫と診断された.他臓器に病変を認めなかった為, 尿道原発の悪性リンパ腫と診断し放射線療法を施行した.治療後, 腫瘍は著明に縮小したが肺転移が出現した.エトポシド単剤による化学療法を追加したが, 放射線治療後5ヵ月で腫瘍の急激な増加を認め癌死したA patient with a primary malignant lymphoma surrounding the female urethra is reported. Despite the good response of the primary tumor to radiotherapy, the patient died shortly after diagnosis due to disseminated disease. We reviewed 16 cases of this rare entity reported previously

    Analysis of an insertion mutation in a cohort of 94 patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 31 from Nagano, Japan

    Spinocerebellar ataxia type 31 (SCA31) is a recently defined subtype of autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia (ADCA) characterized by adult-onset, pure cerebellar ataxia. The C/T substitution in the 5′-untranslated region of the puratrophin-1 gene (PLEKHG4) or a disease-specific haplotype within the 900-kb SCA31 critical region just upstream of PLEKHG4 has been used for the diagnosis of SCA31. Very recently, a disease-specific insertion containing penta-nucleotide (TGGAA)n repeats has been found in this critical region in SCA31 patients. SCA31 was highly prevalent in Nagano, Japan, where SCA31 accounts for approximately 42% of ADCA families. We screened the insertion in 94 SCA31 patients from 71 families in Nagano. All patients had a 2.6- to 3.7-kb insertion. The size of the insertion was inversely correlated with the age at onset but not associated with the progression rate after onset. (TAGAA)n repeats at the 5′-end of the insertion were variable in number, ranging from 0 (without TAGAA sequence) to 4. The number of (TAGAA)n repeats was inversely correlated to the total size of the insertion. The number of (TAGAA)n repeats was comparatively uniform within patients from the three endemic foci in Nagano. Only one patient, heterozygous for the C/T substitution in PLEKHG4, had the insertions in both alleles; they were approximately 3.0 and 4.3 kb in size. Sequencing and Southern hybridization using biotin-labeled (TGGAA)5 probe strongly indicated that the 3.0-kb insertion, but not the 4.3-kb insertion, contained (TGGAA)n stretch. We also found that 3 of 405 control individuals (0.7%) had the insertions from 1.0 to 3.5 kb in length. They were negative for the C/T substitution in PLEKHG4, and neither of the insertions contained (TGGAA)n stretch at their 5′-end by sequencing. The insertions in normal controls were clearly detected by Southern hybridization using (TAAAA)5 probe, while they were not labeled with (TGGAA)5 or (TAGAA)5 probe. These data indicate that control alleles very rarely have a nonpathogenic large insertion in the SCA31 critical region and that not only the presence of the insertion but also its size is not sufficient evidence for a disease-causing allele. We approve of the view that (TGGAA)n repeats in the insertion are indeed related to the pathogenesis of SCA31, but it remains undetermined whether a large insertion lacking (TGGAA)n is nonpathogenic

    Acute exercise in a hot environment increases heat shock protein 70 and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator 1α mRNA in Thoroughbred horse skeletal muscle

    Heat acclimatization or acclimation training in horses is practiced to reduce physiological strain and improve exercise performance in the heat, which can involve metabolic improvement in skeletal muscle. However, there is limited information concerning the acute signaling responses of equine skeletal muscle after exercise in a hot environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that exercise in hot conditions induces greater changes in heat shock proteins and mitochondrial-related signaling in equine skeletal muscle compared with exercise in cool conditions. Fifteen trained Thoroughbred horses [4.6 ± 0.4 (mean ± SE) years old; 503 ± 14 kg] were assigned to perform a treadmill exercise test in cool conditions [COOL; Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), 12.5°C; n = 8] or hot conditions (HOT; WBGT, 29.5°C; n = 7) consisting of walking at 1.7 m/s for 1 min, trotting at 4 m/s for 5 min, and cantering at 7 m/s for 2 min and at 90% of VO2max for 2 min, followed by walking at 1.7 m/s for 20 min. Heart rate during exercise and plasma lactate concentration immediately after exercise were measured. Biopsy samples were obtained from the middle gluteal muscle before and at 4 h after exercise, and relative quantitative analysis of mRNA expression using real-time RT-PCR was performed. Data were analyzed with using mixed models. There were no significant differences between the two groups in peak heart rate (COOL, 213 ± 3 bpm; HOT, 214 ± 4 bpm; p = 0.782) and plasma lactate concentration (COOL, 13.1 ± 1.4 mmoL/L; HOT, 17.5 ± 1.7 mmoL/L; p = 0.060), while HSP-70 (COOL, 1.9-fold, p = 0.207; HOT, 2.4-fold, p = 0.045), PGC-1α (COOL, 3.8-fold, p = 0.424; HOT, 8.4-fold, p = 0.010), HIF-1α (COOL, 1.6-fold, p = 0.315; HOT, 2.2-fold, p = 0.018) and PDK4 (COOL, 7.6-fold, p = 0.412; HOT, 14.1-fold, p = 0.047) mRNA increased significantly only in HOT at 4 h after exercise. These data indicate that acute exercise in a hot environment facilitates protective response to heat stress (HSP-70), mitochondrial biogenesis (PGC-1α and HIF-1α) and fatty acid oxidation (PDK4)

    Rice immediately adapts the dynamics of photosynthates translocation to roots in response to changes in soil water environment

    Rice is susceptible to abiotic stresses such as drought stress. To enhance drought resistance, elucidating the mechanisms by which rice plants adapt to intermittent drought stress that may occur in the field is an important requirement. Roots are directly exposed to changes in the soil water condition, and their responses to these environmental changes are driven by photosynthates. To visualize the distribution of photosynthates in the root system of rice plants under drought stress and recovery from drought stress, we combined X-ray computed tomography (CT) with open type positron emission tomography (OpenPET) and positron-emitting tracer imaging system (PETIS) with 11C tracer. The short half-life of 11C (20.39 min) allowed us to perform multiple experiments using the same plant, and thus photosynthate translocation was visualized as the same plant was subjected to drought stress and then re-irrigation for recovery. The results revealed that when soil is drier, 11C-photosynthates mainly translocated to the seminal roots, likely to promote elongation of the root with the aim of accessing water stored in the lower soil layers. The photosynthates translocation to seminal roots immediately stopped after rewatering then increased significantly in crown roots. We suggest that when rice plant experiencing drought is re-irrigated from the bottom of pot, the destination of 11C-photosynthates translocation immediately switches from seminal root to crown roots. We reveal that rice roots are responsive to changes in soil water conditions and that rice plants differentially adapts the dynamics of photosynthates translocation to crown roots and seminal roots depending on soil conditions

    Severity and Progression Rate of Cerebellar Ataxia in 16q-linked Autosomal Dominant Cerebellar Ataxia (16q-ADCA) in the Endemic Nagano Area of Japan

    16q22.1-linked autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia (16q-ADCA) is a recently defined subtype of ADCA identified by a disease-specific C/T substitution in the 5' untranslated region of the puratrophin-1 gene. In Nagano, the central mountainous district of the main island of Japan, 16q-ADCA and spinocerebellar ataxia type 6 (SCA6) are the most and second most prevalent subtypes of ADCA, respectively. Both subtypes are classified into Harding's ADCA III, but little attention has been given to the differences in the severity and progression rate of cerebellar ataxia between 16q-ADCA and SCA6. We investigated the clinical severity and progression rate of cerebellar ataxia of 16q-ADCA patients using international cooperative ataxia rating scale and scale for the assessment and rating of ataxia and compared them with those of SCA6 patients. The age at onset was much higher in 16q-ADCA patients (60.1 +/- 9.8 years, n = 66) than in SCA6 patients (41.1 +/- 8.7 years, n = 35). Clinical features of 16q-ADCA were basically consistent with pure cerebellar ataxia, as well as in SCA6, but gaze-evoked nystagmus was observed less frequently in 16q-ADCA patients than in SCA6 patients. When compared at almost the same disease duration after onset, the severity of cerebellar ataxia was a little higher, and the progression rate seemed more rapid in 16q-ADCA patients than in SCA6 patients, but the differences were not significant.ArticleCEREBELLUM. 8(1):46-51 (2009)journal articl

    Salvage living donor liver transplantation after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty for recurrent Budd-Chiari syndrome: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Budd-Chiari syndrome is a very rare pathological entity that ultimately leads to liver failure. Several therapeutic modalities, including percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, have been attempted to save the life of patients with Budd-Chiari syndrome. Few reports have described a salvage living donor liver transplantation performed after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty in a patient with acute Budd-Chiari syndrome.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 26-year-old Japanese man developed severe progressive manifestations, such as massive ascites and hematemesis due to rupture of esophageal varices. After making several investigations, we diagnosed the case as Budd-Chiari syndrome. We first performed percutaneous transluminal angioplasty to dilate a short-segment stenosis of his inferior vena cava. The first percutaneous transluminal angioplasty greatly improved the clinical manifestations. However, after a year, re-stenosis was detected, and a second percutaneous transluminal angioplasty failed to open the severe stricture of his inferior vena cava. Since our patient had manifestations of acute liver failure, we decided to perform salvage living donor liver transplantation from his brother. The transplantation was successfully performed and all clinical manifestations were remarkably alleviated.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In cases of recurrent Budd-Chiari syndrome, the blocked hepatic venous outflow is not always relieved, even with invasive therapies. We have to take into account the possibility of adopting alternative salvage therapies if the first therapeutic modalities fail. When invasive therapy such as percutaneous transluminal angioplasty fails, liver transplantation should be considered as an alternative option.</p
