Hong Kong chapter report
Yiu-ming Cheung from Hong Kong Baptist University, China, and Michael Chau from The University of Hong Kong, China, has discussed significant facts of the IEEE (Hong Kong) Computational Intelligence Chapter report. The Hong Kong Chapter, founded in 2003, is aimed at coordinating and supporting work and stimulating the public's interests in the field of Computational Intelligence in the city. They have organized many activities that can be classified in four categories, such as conference co-organization and sponsorship, academic seminars, industry visits, and student project/paper competition, to meet their goal. The Chapter organized several academic seminars on topics regarding computational intelligence for enabling the members and the local community a communication channel to share their expertise and intelligence. The Chapter also organized several industry visits for making the members aware of the latest development of computational intelligence technologies in the industry.published_or_final_versio

Who would benefit from memory training? A pilot study examining the ceiling effect of concurrent cognitive stimulation
Diverse effects of memory training were observed in the literature. One possible factor is the amount of concurrent cognitive training received during the training program. In this pilot study, we recruited 24 elderly adults with or without concurrent cognitive stimulations to attend a memory-training program. Findings suggested that elderly people without concurrent cognitive stimulation could benefit from a memory-training program in the form of improved initiation and memory functioning. Self-rated quality of life measure also showed improvements alongside the cognitive benefits. Elderly people with regular concurrent cognitive stimulation, on the other hand, seemed to plateau in their level of performance and did not show any significant change. Our preliminary findings suggested nonlinear concurrent cognitive stimulation in the elderly

Study of deposition parameters for the fabrication of ZnO thin films using femtosecond laser
Femtosecond (fs) pulsed laser deposition (fs-PLD) of ZnO thin film on borosilicate glass substrates is reported in this work. The effect of important fs-PLD parameters such as targetāsubstrate distance, laser pulse energy and substrate temperature on structure, morphology, optical transparency and luminescence of as-deposited films is discussed. XRD analysis reveals that all the films grown using the laser energy range 120ā230Ā Ī¼J are polycrystalline when they are deposited at room temperature in a ~10ā5Ā Torr vacuum. Introducing 0.7Ā mTorr oxygen pressure, the films show preferred c-axis growth and transform into a single-crystal-like film when the substrate temperature is increased to 100Ā Ā°C. The scanning electron micrographs show the presence of small nano-size grains at 25Ā Ā°C, which grow in size to the regular hexagonal shape particles at 100Ā Ā°C. Optical transmission of the ZnO film is found to increase with an increase in crystal quality. Maximum transmittance of 95Ā % in the wavelength range 400ā1400Ā nm is achieved for films deposited at 100Ā Ā°C employing a laser pulse energy of 180Ā Ī¼J. The luminescence spectra show a strong UV emission band peaked at 377Ā nm close to the ZnO band gap. The shallow donor defects increase at higher pulse energies and higher substrate temperatures, which give rise to violet-blue luminescence. The results indicate that nano-crystalline ZnO thin films with high crystalline quality and optical transparency can be fabricated by using pulses from fs lasers
