    Wideband Optical Filters with Small Gap Coupled Subwavelength Metal Structures

    In this letter, we show that the bandwidth of optical band-stop filters made of subwavelength metal structures can be significantly increased by the strong plasmonic near-field coupling through the corners of the periodic metal squares. The effect of small gap coupling on the spectral bandwidth is investigated by varying the gap size between the metal squares. An equivalent transmission line model is used to fit the transmission and reflection spectra of the metal filters. The transmission line model can characterize well the metal structures with the gap size larger than the near-field decay length. However, it fails to model the transmission and reflection spectra when the gap size reaches the decay range of the near-field in the small gaps

    Municipal Property Acquisition Patterns in a Shrinking City: Evidence for the Persistence of an Urban Growth Paradigm in Buffalo, NY

    The purpose of this article is to examine municipal property acquisition patterns in shrinking cities. We use data from the City of Buffalo’s municipal property auction records to analyze the spatial distribution of properties offered for sale in its annual tax foreclosure auction. In addition to these data, we examine demolition and building permit records. Our analysis suggests that cities like Buffalo follow strategies based on an urban growth paradigm when responding to abandonment. This paradigm operates under the assumption that growth is a constant and urban development is only limited by fiscal constraints, underdeveloped systems of urban governance, environmental degradation, and resistance by anti-growth coalitions. We recommend that planners in shrinking cities de-emphasize growth based planning and focus on rightsizing strategies. These strategies are based on the assumption that growth is not a constant. Consequently, urban revitalization is concentrated in a smaller urban footprint

    Ab initio modeling of the energy landscape for screw dislocations in body-centered cubic high-entropy alloys

    In traditional body-centered cubic (bcc) metals, the core properties of screw dislocations play a critical role in plastic deformation at low temperatures. Recently, much attention has been focused on refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs), which also possess bcc crystal structures. However, unlike face-centered cubic high-entropy alloys (HEAs), there have been far fewer investigations on bcc HEAs, specifically on the possible effects of chemical short-range order (SRO) in these multiple principal element alloys on dislocation mobility. Here, using density functional theory, we investigate the distribution of dislocation core properties in MoNbTaW RHEAs alloys, and how they are influenced by SRO. The average values of the core energies in the RHEA are found to be larger than those in the corresponding pure constituent bcc metals, and are relatively insensitive to the degree of SRO. However, the presence of SRO is shown to have a large effect on narrowing the distribution of dislocation core energies and decreasing the spatial heterogeneity of dislocation core energies in the RHEA. It is argued that the consequences for the mechanical behavior of HEAs is a change in the energy landscape of the dislocations which would likely heterogeneously inhibit their motion

    The evolution of a citation network topology: The development of the journal Scientometrics

    By mapping the electronic database containing all papers in Scientometrics for a 26-year period (1978-2004), we uncover the topological measures that characterize the network at a given moment, as well as the time evolution of these quantities. The citation network of the journal displays the characteristic features of a “small-world” network of local dense clusters of highly specialized literature. These clusters, however, are efficiently connected into a large single component by a small number of “hub” papers that allow short-distance connection among increasingly large numbers of papers. The patterns of evolution of the network toward this “small-world” are also explored

    Synergistic up-regulation of CXCL10 by virus and IFN Îł in human airway epithelial cells.

    Airway epithelial cells are the first line of defense against viral infections and are instrumental in coordinating the inflammatory response. In this study, we demonstrate the synergistic stimulation of CXCL10 mRNA and protein, a key chemokine responsible for the early immune response to viral infection, following treatment of airway epithelial cells with IFN Îł and influenza virus. The synergism also occurred when the cells were treated with IFN Îł and a viral replication mimicker (dsRNA) both in vitro and in vivo. Despite the requirement of type I interferon (IFNAR) signaling in dsRNA-induced CXCL10, the synergism was independent of the IFNAR pathway since it wasn't affected by the addition of a neutralizing IFNAR antibody or the complete lack of IFNAR expression. Furthermore, the same synergistic effect was also observed when a CXCL10 promoter reporter was examined. Although the responsive promoter region contains both ISRE and NFÎşB sites, western blot analysis indicated that the combined treatment of IFN Îł and dsRNA significantly augmented NFÎşB but not STAT1 activation as compared to the single treatment. Therefore, we conclude that IFN Îł and dsRNA act in concert to potentiate CXCL10 expression in airway epithelial cells via an NFÎşB-dependent but IFNAR-STAT independent pathway and it is at least partly regulated at the transcriptional level
