Reclaiming the narrative: exploring personal recovery in psychosis
Section A:
Presented here, is a systematic literature review of the application of narrative interventions in psychosis. Using a meta-ethnographic approach, the qualitative elements of the 9 included studies were synthesized. Nine core themes emerged, relating to therapeutic processes found across narrative approaches in psychosis. These are; equal stories, equal humanity; making meaning; doing it together; alternative narratives; openness; family members as equal partners; strengthening personal narratives; positive impact on social networks and quality of life. A critical appraisal of the included studies is discussed and the implications for clinical practice and research are considered.
Section B:
Presented here, is an empirical paper outlining the development of a grounded theory of personal recovery as it pertains to Black individuals with psychosis. The model presents 8 key experiences that were found to facilitate the development of a sense of personal recovery. These are: engaging and re-engaging in strategies to maintain wellbeing; risk and reward of reintegration, finding safe spaces, power experienced as safe, an empowered sense of self; joining with others & making change; stabilising and deepening relationships and in pursuit of a better life. Six themes emerged that were found to serve as disempowering experiences. These are: overwhelming circumstances; being criminalised; mental health wards; the wider mental health system; power experienced as abusive; the hidden self. The model is summarised by 3 overarching themes. These are: recovery as delicate, effortful and long. The theoretical, policy and clinical implications are discussed
THE IMPACT OF BSE, FMD, AND U.S. EXPORT PROMOTION EXPENDITURES ON JAPANESE MEAT DEMAND
The study examined Japanese consumer response to the discovery of BSE and discusses implications for the U.S. beef industry following BSE discovery in the U.S. Impacts of FMD and export promotion expenditures were also modeled. Synthetic inverse and ordinary demand systems were used to appropriately specify the demand system.Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,
The ‘silent pistol’ in Ghana’s local government system: presiding members vs. chief executives
Decentralisation and local governance aim at local economic development, but collaboration among key actors at the local level is essential in realising this objective. However, at district assembly level Ghana exhibits problematic conflicts between district chief executives (DCEs), who head the executive committee, and presiding members (PMs) who convene and preside over assembly deliberations, acting as speaker. This study aims to unpack the main causes of such unsavoury conflicts by using 13 case studies from the Ashanti Region. Both primary and secondary data were collected for the study. Primary data was gathered from a selection of 40 key informants drawn from three main groups including DCEs, PMs, and other stakeholders such as regional coordinating council members, assembly members and chiefs. The main research instrument was one-on-one in-depth interviews with participants. The study found deep-seated conflicts between DCEs and PMs, in some cases even transcending these two actors to involve a greater section of actors within the local government administration. The study noted that professional bureaucrats within the local government service are affected when allegations of affiliation are levelled against them. The study also found that the legal status of DCEs and PMs appears to be the main driver of potential conflict, although other context-specific issues were also prevalent
The Impact of NAFTA on Agricultural Commodity Trade: A Partial Equilibrium Analysis.
This paper examines the effects of the North American Free Trade Agreement on agricultural commodity trade using extensive data. The data cover agricultural exports and imports between the U.S. and NAFTA partners over the extended period of 1989-2010. The commodities covered in our analyses include; corn, soy bean, cotton, wheat, fresh vegetables, poultry, dairy products, and red meats. Since the signing of the agreement, U.S. total agricultural commodity trade with NAFTA members has increased three-fold from 61 billion in 2010. A partial equilibrium model, in which we derive each trading partner's excess demand and excess supply, is used to study the impact of NAFTA on trade, controlling for other trade-inducing variables such as exchange rates, tariffs, per capita incomes, and relative prices. Regression results show mixed effects of NAFTA on different commodities while graphical and counterfactual analyses indicate strictly positive effects.NAFTA, Agricultural commodities, trade, partial equilibrium analysis, Agribusiness, Agricultural and Food Policy, Crop Production/Industries, International Relations/Trade, Marketing,
ESTIMATING THE VALUE OF SOURCE VERIFICATION OF FEEDER CATTLE
Source-verified (SV) feeder cattle auctions were held in Bloomfield, Iowa, each October, November, and December from 1997-2000. This study compares price data from these SV auctions to traditional auctions at the same location to determine whether a premium exists for SV feeder cattle. Hedonic pricing models were estimated to evaluate the price effects of lot characteristics, market forces, and type of market (SV versus regular sale). The SV cattle were sorted and pooled into large lots. The larger lot size, consistent with early research, earned large price premiums. After accounting for lot size, the SV premium for lighter cattle (< 650/600-pound steers/heifers) was estimated at $1.30/cwt, and was significant. The SV premium over and above lot size was not significant for heavier feeder cattle.auction, cattle, hedonic pricing model, markets, source-verified auction, Livestock Production/Industries,
Impact of Subsidies Across Alabama Counties: An Econometric Interpretation
Fixed effect time series effect models are used to analyze the spatial and time series pattern of the effects of subsidies on manufacturing income across twenty counties in Alabama from 1970 to 1999. The results from the fixed effect model indicate that median populated counties performed better than larger and smaller counties while the time series effect model indicates that the impact of subsidies is marginal across the state over time.Agricultural and Food Policy,
Chinese Market Access Barriers of U.S Oilseeds and Grains
China was admitted into the WTO in December 2001 and this raised the hopes of the US that China will open up to agricultural trade with the US. However, this potential has not been realized. The goal of this study is to determine the impacts of trade impediments and barriers of the market access of US oilseeds and grains in China. A market access variable that was obtained by dividing the total value of U.S soybean and corn exports to China by U.S agricultural G.D.P was regressed on China’s per capita income, exchange rate of the yuan to the dollar, arable land to labor ratio in the U.S and a dummy variable representing China’s WTO accession. The result found per capita income to have a positive impact on market access of U.S oilseeds and grains in China. Exchange rate of the yuan to the dollar was found to be significant and has a negative impact on market access. However, China’s WTO accession and the arable land to labor ratio in the U.S did not have any significance on the market access of U.S oilseeds and grains.Market Access, Market Access Barriers, U.S Oil seeds and Grains, Import, International Development, International Relations/Trade,
