    Statistical analysis of IMRT dosimetry quality assurance measurements for local delivery guideline

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Purpose</p> <p>To establish our institutional guideline for IMRT delivery, we statistically evaluated the results of dosimetry quality assurance (DQA) measurements and derived local confidence limits using the concept confidence limit of |mean|+1.96Ļƒ.</p> <p>Materials and methods</p> <p>From June 2006 to March 2009, 206 patients with head and neck cancer, prostate cancer, liver cancer, or brain tumor were treated using LINAC-based IMRT technique. In order to determine site specific DQA tolerances at a later stage, a hybrid plan with the same fluence maps as in the treatment plan was generated on CT images of a cylindrical phantom of acryl. Points of measurement using a 0.125 cm<sup>3 </sup>ion-chamber were typically located in the region of high and uniform doses. The planar dose distributions perpendicular to the central axis were measured by using a diode array in solid water with all fields delivered, and assessed using gamma criteria of 3%/3 mm. The mean values and standard deviations were used to develop the local confidence and tolerance limits. The dose differences and gamma pass rates for the different treatment sites were also evaluated in terms of total monitor uints (MU), MU/cGy, and the number of PTV's pieces.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The mean values and standard deviations of ion-chamber dosimetry differences between calculated and measured doses were -1.6 Ā± 1.2% for H&N cancer, -0.4 Ā± 1.2% for prostate and abdominal cancer, and -0.6 Ā± 1.5% for brain tumor. Most of measured doses (92.2%) agreed with the calculated doses within a tolerance limit of Ā±3% recommended in the literature. However, we found some systematic under-dosage for all treatment sites. The percentage of points passing the gamma criteria, averaged over all treatment sites was 97.3 Ā± 3.7%. The gamma pass rate and the agreement of ion-chamber dosimetry generally decreased with increasing the number of PTV's pieces, the degree of modulation (MU/cGy), and the total MU beyond 700. Our local confidence limits were comparable to those of AAPM TG 119 and ESTRO guidelines that were provided as a practical baseline for center-to-center commissioning comparison. Thus, our institutional confidence and action limits for IMRT delivery were set into the same levels of those guidelines.</p> <p>Discussion and Conclusions</p> <p>The systematic under-dosage were corrected by tuning up the MLC-related factors (dosimetric gap and transmission) in treatment planning system (TPS) and further by incorporating the tongue-and groove effect into TPS. Institutions that have performed IMRT DQA measurements over a certain period of time need to analyze their accrued DQA data. We confirmed the overall integrity of our IMRT system and established the IMRT delivery guideline during this procedure. Dosimetric corrections for the treatment plans outside of the action level can be suggested only with such rigorous DQA and statistical analysis.</p

    MOTIVATING BUSINESS MAJOR STUDENTS TO LEARN COMPUTER PROGRAMMING ā€“ A CASE STUDY

    Learning to program is viewed as difficult by many students. How to motivate and engage business major students to learn programming is challenging. In this paper, we report our attempt to teach business students programming. In our teaching method, first we orient students with the business and managerial aspect of programming by posing six original questions. By discussing these six questions, students gain appreciation of the high level responsibility of participating, contributing, assessing, and managing Information Systems (IS) as business professionals. Second, we adopt a Let Us Do It Together approach to deliver hands on labs to teach the technical aspect of programming. Inspired by the constructivism learning theory and the learning by doing and experimentation idea, our Let Us Do It Together approach mitigates studentsā€™ anxiety and fear of programming. Overall, our teaching approach seems to enhance studentsā€™ interest in programming

    Cloud Simulations in Response to Turbulence Parameterizations in the GISS Model E GCM

    The response of cloud simulations to turbulence parameterizations is studied systematically using the GISS general circulation model (GCM) E2 employed in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5).Without the turbulence parameterization, the relative humidity (RH) and the low cloud cover peak unrealistically close to the surface; with the dry convection or with only the local turbulence parameterization, these two quantities improve their vertical structures, but the vertical transport of water vapor is still weak in the planetary boundary layers (PBLs); with both local and nonlocal turbulence parameterizations, the RH and low cloud cover have better vertical structures in all latitudes due to more significant vertical transport of water vapor in the PBL. The study also compares the cloud and radiation climatologies obtained from an experiment using a newer version of turbulence parameterization being developed at GISS with those obtained from the AR5 version. This newer scheme differs from the AR5 version in computing nonlocal transports, turbulent length scale, and PBL height and shows significant improvements in cloud and radiation simulations, especially over the subtropical eastern oceans and the southern oceans. The diagnosed PBL heights appear to correlate well with the low cloud distribution over oceans. This suggests that a cloud-producing scheme needs to be constructed in a framework that also takes the turbulence into consideration

    Miniature probe for dual- modality photoacoustic microscopy and white- light microscopy for image guidance: A prototype toward an endoscope

    In this study, a novel photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) probe integrating white- light microscopy (WLM) modality that provides guidance for PAM imaging and complementary information is implemented. One single core of an imaging fiber bundle is employed to deliver a pulsed laser for photoacoustic excitation for PAM mode, which provides high resolution with deep penetration. Meanwhile, for WLM mode, the imaging fiber bundle is used to transmit two- dimensional superficial images. Lateral resolution of 7.2 ƎĀ¼m for PAM is achieved. Since miniature components are used, the probe diameter is only 1.7- mm. Imaging of phantom and animals in vivo is conducted to show the imaging capability of the probe. The probe has several advantages by introducing the WLM mode, such as being able to conveniently identify regions of interest and align the focus for PAM mode. The prototype of an endoscope shows potential to facilitate clinical photoacoustic endoscopic applications.Integrated photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) and white- light microscopy into a miniature probe can be useful for medical imaging applications such as image guidance for PAM and endoscopy. Further, the two modalities provide complementary information. However, implementation of the probe with miniature size and high resolution has been technically challenging.     A gene-model-free method for linkage analysis of a disease-related-trait based on analysis of proband/sibling pairs

    In this paper we investigate the power of finding linkage to a disease locus through analysis of the disease-related traits. We propose two family-based gene-model-free linkage statistics. Both involve considering the distribution of the number of alleles identical by descent with the proband and comparing siblings with the disease-related trait to those without the disease-related-trait. The objective is to find linkages to disease-related traits that are pleiotropic for both the disease and the disease-related-traits. The power of these statistics is investigated for Kofendrerd Personality Disorder-related traits a (Joining/founding cults) and trait b (Fear/discomfort with strangers) of the simulated data. The answers were known prior to the execution of the reported analyses. We find that both tests have very high power when applied to the samples created by combining the data of the three cities for which we have nuclear family data

    Carpe Diem: On the Evaluation of World Knowledge in Lifelong Language Models

    In an ever-evolving world, the dynamic nature of knowledge presents challenges for language models that are trained on static data, leading to outdated encoded information. However, real-world scenarios require models not only to acquire new knowledge but also to overwrite outdated information into updated ones. To address this under-explored issue, we introduce the temporally evolving question answering benchmark, EvolvingQA - a novel benchmark designed for training and evaluating LMs on an evolving Wikipedia database, where the construction of our benchmark is automated with our pipeline using large language models. Our benchmark incorporates question-answering as a downstream task to emulate real-world applications. Through EvolvingQA, we uncover that existing continual learning baselines have difficulty in updating and forgetting outdated knowledge. Our findings suggest that the models fail to learn updated knowledge due to the small weight gradient. Furthermore, we elucidate that the models struggle mostly on providing numerical or temporal answers to questions asking for updated knowledge.
