    Two local solutions, one perpendicular and one parallel to the direction of solar gravitational field, are discussed. The influence of gravity on the gas-dynamical process driven by the piston is discussed in terms of characteristic theory, and the flow field is given quantitatively. For a typical piston trajectory similar to the one for an eruptive prominence, the velocity of the shock front which locates ahead the transient front is nearly constant or slightly accelerated, and the width of the compressed flow region may be kept nearly constant or increased linearly, depending on the velocity distribution of the piston. Based on these results, the major features of the transient may be explained. Some of the fine structure of the transient is also shown, which may be compared in detail with observations

    Joint CFO and channel estimation for ZP-OFDM modulated two-way relay networks

    In this paper, we study the problem of joint carrier frequency offset (CFO) and channel estimation for two-way relay network (TWRN). We consider the frequency selective fading channels and adopt the zero padding (ZP) based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) as the modulation of the transmission. Due to the mixture of the first and the second transmission phases, the joint estimation problem becomes much challenging than that in the traditional point-to-point communication systems. By introducing some redundancy, we modify the structure of ZP-OFDM to cope with non-zero frequency synchronization errors. We then propose a nulling-based least square (NLS) method for joint CFO and channel estimation. A detailed performance analysis of NLS has been conducted, where we prove that the unbiasedness of NLS and derive the closed-form estimation mean-square-error (MSE) at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).     Joint CFO and channel estimation for CP-OFDM modulated two-way relay networks

    In this paper, we study the problem of joint carrier frequency offset (CFO) and channel estimation for amplify-andforward (AF) two-way relay network (TWRN) that comprises two source terminals and one relay node. Both the system design and the estimation problem become more challenging when CFO is non-zero in a frequency-selective environment, as compared to the conventional point-to-point communication systems. By introducing some redundancy, we propose a cyclic prefix (CP) based OFDM modulation for TWRN that is capable of maintaining the advantage of using multi-carrier transmission and at the same time facilitates the system initialization, e.g., synchronization and channel estimation. We then apply a least square (LS) approach to solve the estimation problem. The approximated Cramér-Rao Bound (CRB) has been derived as the performance benchmark of the proposed estimator.     Robust Tomlinson-Harashima precoding for non-regenerative multi-antenna relaying systems

    Conference Theme: PHY and FundamentalsIn this paper, we consider the robust transceiver design with Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) for multi-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relaying systems. THP is adopted at the source to mitigate the spatial inter-symbol interference and then a joint Bayesian robust design of THP at source, linear forwarding matrices at relays and linear equalizer at destination is proposed. Based on the elegant characteristics of multiplicative convexity and matrix-monotone functions, the optimal structure of the nonlinear transceiver is first derived. Based on the derived structure, the optimization problem is greatly simplified and can be efficiently solved.     CFO estimation in OFDM systems under timing and channel length uncertainties with model averaging

    In this letter, we investigate the problem of CFO estimation in OFDM systems when the timing offset and channel length are not exactly known. Instead of explicitly estimating the timing offset and channel length, we employ a multi-model approach, where the timing offset and channel length can take multiple values with certain probabilities. The effect of multimodel is directly incorporated into the CFO estimator. Results show that the proposed estimator outperforms the estimator selecting only the most probable model and the method taking the maximal model. © 2006 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Longitudinal residual strain and stress-strain relationship in rat small intestine

    BACKGROUND: To obtain a more detailed description of the stress-free state of the intestinal wall, longitudinal residual strain measurements are needed. Furthermore, data on longitudinal stress-strain relations in visceral organs are scarce. The present study aims to investigate the longitudinal residual strain and the longitudinal stress-strain relationship in the rat small intestine. METHODS: The longitudinal zero-stress state was obtained by cutting tissue strips parallel to the longitudinal axis of the intestine. The longitudinal residual stress was characterized by a bending angle (unit: degrees per unit length and positive when bending outwards). Residual strain was computed from the change in dimensions between the zero-stress state and the no-load state. Longitudinal stresses and strains were computed from stretch experiments in the distal ileum at luminal pressures ranging from 0–4 cmH(2)O. RESULTS: Large morphometric variations were found between the duodenum and ileum with the largest wall thickness and wall area in the duodenum and the largest inner circumference and luminal area in the distal ileum (p < 0.001). The bending angle did not differ between the duodenum and ileum (p > 0.5). The longitudinal residual strain was tensile at the serosal surface and compressive at the mucosal surface. Hence, the neutral axis was approximately in the mid-wall. The longitudinal residual strain and the bending angle was not uniform around the intestinal circumference and had the highest values on the mesenteric sides (p < 0.001). The stress-strain curves fitted well to the mono-exponential function with determination coefficients above 0.96. The α constant increased with the pressure, indicating the intestinal wall became stiffer in longitudinal direction when pressurized. CONCLUSION: Large longitudinal residual strains reside in the small intestine and showed circumferential variation. This indicates that the tissue is not uniform and cannot be treated as a homogenous material. The longitudinal stiffness of the intestinal wall increased with luminal pressure. Longitudinal residual strains must be taken into account in studies of gastrointestinal biomechanical properties

    Identification and characterisation of seed storage protein transcripts from Lupinus angustifolius

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In legumes, seed storage proteins are important for the developing seedling and are an important source of protein for humans and animals. <it>Lupinus angustifolius </it>(L.), also known as narrow-leaf lupin (NLL) is a grain legume crop that is gaining recognition as a potential human health food as the grain is high in protein and dietary fibre, gluten-free and low in fat and starch.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Genes encoding the seed storage proteins of NLL were characterised by sequencing cDNA clones derived from developing seeds. Four families of seed storage proteins were identified and comprised three unique α, seven β, two γ and four δ conglutins. This study added eleven new expressed storage protein genes for the species. A comparison of the deduced amino acid sequences of NLL conglutins with those available for the storage proteins of <it>Lupinus albus </it>(L.), <it>Pisum sativum </it>(L.), <it>Medicago truncatula </it>(L.), <it>Arachis hypogaea </it>(L.) and <it>Glycine max </it>(L.) permitted the analysis of a phylogenetic relationships between proteins and demonstrated, in general, that the strongest conservation occurred within species. In the case of 7S globulin (β conglutins) and 2S sulphur-rich albumin (δ conglutins), the analysis suggests that gene duplication occurred after legume speciation. This contrasted with 11S globulin (α conglutin) and basic 7S (γ conglutin) sequences where some of these sequences appear to have diverged prior to speciation. The most abundant NLL conglutin family was β (56%), followed by α (24%), δ (15%) and γ (6%) and the transcript levels of these genes increased 10<sup>3 </sup>to 10<sup>6 </sup>fold during seed development. We used the 16 NLL conglutin sequences identified here to determine that for individuals specifically allergic to lupin, all seven members of the β conglutin family were potential allergens.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study has characterised 16 seed storage protein genes in NLL including 11 newly-identified members. It has helped lay the foundation for efforts to use molecular breeding approaches to improve lupins, for example by reducing allergens or increasing the expression of specific seed storage protein(s) with desirable nutritional properties.</p
