    Dynamics of tilt-based browsing on mobile devices

    A tilt-controlled photo browsing method for small mobile devices is presented. The implementation uses continuous inputs from an accelerometer, and a multimodal (visual, audio and vibrotactile) display coupled with the states of this model. The model is based on a simple physical model, with its characteristics shaped to enhance usability. We show how the dynamics of the physical model can be shaped to make the handling qualities of the mobile device fit the browsing task. We implemented the proposed algorithm on Samsung MITs PDA with tri-axis accelerometer and a vibrotactile motor. The experiment used seven novice users browsing from 100 photos. We compare a tilt-based interaction method with a button-based browser and an iPod wheel. We discuss the usability performance and contrast this with subjective experience from the users. The iPod wheel has significantly poorer performance than button pushing or tilt interaction, despite its commercial popularity

    Magnetization reversal and magnetic anisotropy in Co network nanostructures

    The magnetization reversal and magnetic anisotropy in Co network structures have been studied using magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE). An enhancement of the coercivity is observed in the network structures and is attributed to the pinning of domain walls by the hole edges in the vicinity of which the demagnetizing field spatially varies. We find that the magnetization reversal process is dominated by the intrinsic unaxial anisotropy (2K(u)/M(s)approximate to 200 Oe) in spite of the shape anisotropy induced by the hole edges. The influence of the cross-junction on the competition between the intrinsic uniaxial anisotropy and the induced shape anisotropy is discussed using micromagnetic simulations

    Dynamic characteristics of flow meters for fuel consumption measurement in ships

    The dynamic characteristics of various flow meters for fuel consumption measurement aboard shipswere evaluated. The flow rate was measured using the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) oil flow standard system using K-oil(density : 0.804 g/cm3, viscosity : 3.679 cSt), which has similar fluid properties as diesel oil. The flow meters were tested in a test bed that simulated the vibration conditions in ships. The vibration conditions were established in accordance to vibration standard IEC 60068-2-6 as follows: a±0.7g acceleration and 30 Hz frequency. The K-factors (mL/pulse) of various flow meters (PD meter, turbine flow meter, Coriolis flow meter, and ultrasonic flow meter) were obtained for various flow rates (60 L/h ~ 300 L/h). The PD meter, Coriolis flow meter, and ultrasonic flow meter were found to have almost constant Kfactors according to the flow rates. However, the K-factor of the turbine flow meter was reduced at a low flow rate owing to bearing friction in the turbine blade. The flow rate errors of the PD meter, Coriolis flow meter, and ultrasonic flow meter were found to be under ±0.5 % with and without vibration. However, the flow rate error of the turbine flow meter was approximately -4.3 % at a low flow rate (60 L/h) owing to the friction effect. The Coriolis flow meter had the lowest flow rate error (< 0.1%) according to the flow rate. The vibration influenced the flow rate error of the Coriolis flow meter at high flow rates owing to its measuring principle. However, the difference in flow rate errors was a negligible value (0.05 %) with and without vibration.     We study the possible heavy molecular states composed of a pair of charm mesons in the H and S doublets. Since the P-wave charm-strange mesons Ds0(2317)D_{s0}(2317) and Ds1(2460)D_{s1}(2460) are extremely narrow, the future experimental observation of the possible heavy molecular states composed of Ds/Ds∗D_s/D_s^\ast and Ds0(2317)/Ds1(2460)D_{s0}(2317)/D_{s1}(2460) may be feasible if they really exist. Especially the possible JPC=1−−J^{PC}=1^{--} states may be searched for via the initial state radiation technique.Comment: 42 pages, 4 tables, 31 figures.     Stability of Repulsive Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Periodic Potential

    The cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with repulsive nonlinearity and an elliptic function potential models a quasi-one-dimensional repulsive dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a standing light wave. New families of stationary solutions are presented. Some of these solutions have neither an analog in the linear Schr\"odinger equation nor in the integrable nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. Their stability is examined using analytic and numerical methods. All trivial-phase stable solutions are deformations of the ground state of the linear Schr\"odinger equation. Our results show that a large number of condensed atoms is sufficient to form a stable, periodic condensate. Physically, this implies stability of states near the Thomas-Fermi limit.Comment: 12 pages, 17 figure

    Adiabatic Output Coupling of a Bose Gas at Finite Temperatures

    We develop a general theory of adiabatic output coupling from trapped atomic Bose-Einstein Condensates at finite temperatures. For weak coupling, the output rate from the condensate, and the excited levels in the trap, settles in a time proportional to the inverse of the spectral width of the coupling to the output modes. We discuss the properties of the output atoms in the quasi-steady-state where the population in the trap is not appreciably depleted. We show how the composition of the output beam, containing condensate and thermal component, may be controlled by changing the frequency of the output coupler. This composition determines the first and second order coherence of the output beam. We discuss the changes in the composition of the bose gas left in the trap and show how nonresonant output coupling can stimulate either the evaporation of thermal excitations in the trap or the growth of non-thermal excitations, when pairs of correlated atoms leave the condensate.Comment: 22 pages, 6 Figs.     Stability of dark solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an optical lattice

    We investigate the stability of dark solitons (DSs) in an effectively one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of the magnetic parabolic trap and an optical lattice (OL). The analysis is based on both the full Gross-Pitaevskii equation and its tight-binding approximation counterpart (discrete nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation). We find that DSs are subject to weak instabilities with an onset of instability mainly governed by the period and amplitude of the OL. The instability, if present, sets in at large times and it is characterized by quasi-periodic oscillations of the DS about the minimum of the parabolic trap.Comment: Typo fixed in Eq.     Search for B -> h(*) nu nubar Decays at Belle

    We present a search for the rare decays B -> h(*) nu nubar, where h(*) stands for a light meson. A data sample of 535 million BBbar pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider is used. Signal candidates are required to have an accompanying B meson fully reconstructed in a hadronic mode and signal-side particles consistent with a single h(*) meson. No significant signal is observed and we set upper limits on the branching fractions at 90% confidence level. The limits on B0 -> K*0 nu nubar and B+ -> K+ nu nubar decays are more stringent than the previous constraints, while the first searches for B0 -> K0 nu nubar, pi0 nu nubar, rho0 nu nubar, phi nu nubar and B+ -> K*+ nu nubar, rho+ nu nubar are reported.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, submit to PR
