Magnetic Interaction in the Geometrically Frustrated Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet CuFeO2\rm CuFeO_2

The spin wave excitations of the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLA) CuFeO2\rm CuFeO_2 have been measured using high resolution inelastic neutron scattering. Antiferromagnetic interactions up to third nearest neighbors in the ab plane (J_1, J_2, J_3, with J2/J1≈0.44J_2/J_1 \approx 0.44 and J3/J1≈0.57J_3/J_1 \approx 0.57), as well as out-of-plane coupling (J_z, with Jz/J1≈0.29J_z/J_1 \approx 0.29) are required to describe the spin wave dispersion relations, indicating a three dimensional character of the magnetic interactions. Two energy dips in the spin wave dispersion occur at the incommensurate wavevectors associated with multiferroic phase, and can be interpreted as dynamic precursors to the magnetoelectric behavior in this system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, published in Phys. Construction of probabilistic boolean network for credit default data

    Get PDF
In this article, we consider the problem of construction of Probabilistic Boolean Networks (PBNs). Previous works have shown that Boolean Networks (BNs) and PBNs have many potential applications in modeling genetic regulatory networks and credit default data. A PBN can be considered as a Markov chain process and the construction of a PBN is an inverse problem. Given the transition probability matrix of the PBN, we try to find a set of BNs with probabilities constituting the given PBN. We propose a revised estimation method based on entropy approach to estimate the model parameters. Practical real credit default data are employed to demonstrate our proposed method.published_or_final_versio

Density oscillations in trapped dipolar condensates

We investigated the ground state wave function and free expansion of a trapped dipolar condensate. We find that dipolar interaction may induce both biconcave and dumbbell density profiles in, respectively, the pancake- and cigar-shaped traps. On the parameter plane of the interaction strengths, the density oscillation occurs only when the interaction parameters fall into certain isolated areas. The relation between the positions of these areas and the trap geometry is explored. By studying the free expansion of the condensate with density oscillation, we show that the density oscillation is detectable from the time-of-flight image.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure

Partial spin freezing in the quasi-two-dimensional La2(Cu,Li)O4

In conventional spin glasses, the magnetic interaction is not strongly anisotropic and the entire spin system freezes at low temperature. In La2(Cu,Li)O4, for which the in-plane exchange interaction dominates the interplane one, only a fraction of spins with antiferromagnetic correlations extending to neighboring planes become spin-glass. The remaining spins with only in-plane antiferromagnetic correlations remain spin-liquid at low temperature. Such a novel partial spin freezing out of a spin-liquid observed in this cold neutron scattering study is likely due to a delicate balance between disorder and quantum fluctuations in the quasi-two dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
