Rhizoctonia solani, a seed-borne pathogen of French Bean in Malaysia
A study on some aspects of the biology, pathogenicity and control of Rhizcotonia solani Kuhn (the
imperfect state of Thanatephorus cucumaris (Frank) Donk was undertaken using an isolate from infected
French bean seed. The fungus was found to be seed-borne on both the imported and some local varieties of
French bean. The rate of growth of the fungus varied with temperature and the medium used. Malt extract
agar gave poor growth and lima bean agar supported the best growth of the fungus at 28°C. The fungus infects
the aerial parts of the French bean plant. The strain was found to have a wide host range. An in vitro study
to test the efficacy of fungicides against Rhizoctonia showed that pentachloronitrobenzene at 50 ppm gave a
good control
Fluctuation of Conductance Peak Spacings in Large Semiconductor Quantum Dots
Fluctuation of Coulomb blockade peak spacings in large two-dimensional
semiconductor quantum dots are studied within a model based on the
electrostatics of several electron islands among which there are random
inductive and capacitive couplings. Each island can accommodate electrons on
quantum orbitals whose energies depend also on an external magnetic field. In
contrast with a single island quantum dot, where the spacing distribution is
close to Gaussian, here the distribution has a peak at small spacing value. The
fluctuations are mainly due to charging effects. The model can explain the
occasional occurrence of couples or even triples of closely spaced Coulomb
blockade peaks, as well as the qualitative behavior of peak positions with the
applied magnetic field.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PR
Electronic Structure of Pyrochlore Iridates: From Topological Dirac Metal to Mott Insulator
In 5d transition metal oxides such as the iridates, novel properties arise
from the interplay of electron correlations and spin-orbit interactions. We
investigate the electronic structure of the pyrochlore iridates, (such as
YIrO) using density functional theory, LDA+U method, and
effective low energy models. A remarkably rich phase diagram emerges on tuning
the correlation strength U. The Ir magnetic moment are always found to be
non-collinearly ordered. However, the ground state changes from a magnetic
metal at weak U, to a Mott insulator at large U. Most interestingly, the
intermediate U regime is found to be a Dirac semi-metal, with vanishing density
of states at the Fermi energy. It also exhibits topological properties -
manifested by special surface states in the form of Fermi arcs, that connect
the bulk Dirac points. This Dirac phase, a three dimensional analog of
graphene, is proposed as the ground state of YIrO and related
compounds. A narrow window of magnetic `axion' insulator, with axion parameter
, may also be present at intermediate U. An applied magnetic field
induces ferromagnetic order and a metallic ground state.Comment: 7pages + 2pages appendices. 7 figures; see also viewpoint article by

Development of an automation and control design system for lowland tropical greenhouses
Vapour pressure deficit (VPD) analysis introduces an approach to develop a better basis for the control
of the environment of lowland greenhouses in Malaysia. The study of vapour pressure deficit (VPD)
is to show air moisture conditions for plant production while taking into account different temperature
levels. The purpose of this project is to develop a real-time automatic temperature and relative humidity
control system in the lowland tropical greenhouse using a PIC16f876A microcontroller. The controller
will then be used to monitor the temperature, relative humidity and VPD in the planting of Chili Kulai
(Titisan 15). The fertigation system was introduced to the greenhouse to fertilize and irrigate the plant as
well as to provide moisture to the environment. A swamp cooler was used to bring down the temperature
and increase moisture content in the greenhouse. Ventilators were installed to remove the heat in the
greenhouse. The study was carried out in an experimental greenhouse located at the Institute of Advanced
Technology, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)
Tripartite thermal correlations in an inhomogeneous spin-star system
We exploit the tripartite negativity to study the thermal correlations in a
tripartite system, that is the three outer spins interacting with the central
one in a spin-star system. We analyze the dependence of such correlations on
the homogeneity of the interactions, starting from the case where central-outer
spin interactions are identical and then focusing on the case where the three
coupling constants are different. We single out some important differences
between the negativity and the concurrence.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
Conditional Gene Editing in Presynaptic Extinction-ensemble Cells via the CRISPR-SaCas9 System
The CRISPR-Cas9 enables efficient gene editing in various cell types, including post-mitotic neurons. However, neuronal ensembles in the same brain region can still be functionally or anatomically different, and such heterogeneity requires gene editing in specific neuronal populations. We recently developed a CRISPR-SaCas9 system-based technique. Combined with activity-dependent cell-labeling methods and anterograde/retrograde adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors, this technique achieves function- and projection-specific gene editing in the mammalian brain. We showed that perturbing cbp (CREB-binding protein) in extinction-ensemble neurons among amygdala-projecting infralimbic cortex (IL) cells impaired fear extinction learning, demonstrating the high efficiency in regulation of extinction learning with CRISPR-Cas9. Here, we describe a detailed protocol of gene perturbation in presynaptic extinction-ensemble neurons in adult rats, including gRNA design, gRNA evaluation in vitro, stereotaxic AAV injection, and contextual fear conditioning. The high specificity and efficiency of projection- and function-specific CRISPR-SaCas9 system can be widely applied in neural circuitry studies
