Structure and Stability of an Amorphous Metal

Using molecular dynamics simulations, with a realistic many-body embedded-atom potential, and a novel method to characterize local order, we study the structure of pure nickel during the rapid quench of the liquid and in the resulting glass. In contrast with previous simulations with pair potentials, we find more crystalline order and fewer icosahedra for slower quenching rates, resulting in a glass less stable against crystallization. It is shown that there is not a specific amorphous structure, only the arrest of the transition from liquid to crystal, resulting in small crystalline clusters immersed in an amorphous matrix with the same structure of the liquid.Comment: 4 pages, 4 ps figs., to appear in Phys. Facile Hydrogen Evolution Reaction on WO3Nanorods

    Get PDF
Tungsten trioxide nanorods have been generated by the thermal decomposition (450 °C) of tetrabutylammonium decatungstate. The synthesized tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanorods have been characterized by XRD, Raman, SEM, TEM, HRTEM and cyclic voltammetry. High resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the synthesized WO3nanorods are crystalline in nature with monoclinic structure. The electrochemical experiments showed that they constitute a better electrocatalytic system for hydrogen evolution reaction in acid medium compared to their bulk counterpart

Synthesis and characterization of a micro scale zinc oxide-PVA composite by ultrasound irradiation and the effect of composite on the crystal growth of zinc oxide

Micro scale zinc oxide-polyvinyl alcohol (ZnO-PVA) composite has been synthesized by ultrasound irradiation. The properties of the as-prepared ZnO-PVA composite material are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS). A band gap of 3.25 eV is estimated from DRS measurements. The controlled crystal growth of zinc oxide has been studied by using the as-prepared micro scale ZnO-PVA composite as seeds for the crystal growth of ZnO. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
