Evolution of the Order Parameter after Bubble Collisions
If a first-order phase transition is terminated by collisions of new-phase
bubbles, there will exist a period of nonequilibrium between the time bubbles
collide and the time thermal equilibrium is established. We study the behavior
of the order parameter during this phase. We find that large nonthermal
fluctuations at this stage tend to restore symmetry, i.e., the order parameter
is smaller than its eventual thermal equilibrium value. We comment on possible
consequences for electroweak baryogenesis.Comment: 11 page LaTeX file with two figures, fig1.ps and fig2.p
Resonant decay of Bose condensates
We present results of fully non-linear calculations of decay of the inflaton
interacting with another scalar field X. Combining numerical results for
cosmologically interesting range of resonance parameter, q \leq 10^6, with
analytical estimates, we extrapolate them to larger q. We find that scattering
of X fluctuations off the Bose condensate is a very efficient mechanism
limiting growth of X fluctuations. For a single-component X, the resulting
variance, at large q, is much smaller than that obtained in the Hartree
approximation.Comment: LaTeX, 10 pages including 4 figure
Patterns from preheating
The formation of regular patterns is a well-known phenomenon in condensed
matter physics. Systems that exhibit pattern formation are typically driven and
dissipative with pattern formation occurring in the weakly non-linear regime
and sometimes even in more strongly non-linear regions of parameter space. In
the early universe, parametric resonance can drive explosive particle
production called preheating. The fields that are populated then decay quantum
mechanically if their particles are unstable. Thus, during preheating, a
driven-dissipative system exists. In this paper, we show that a self-coupled
inflaton oscillating in its potential at the end of inflation can exhibit
pattern formation.Comment: 4 pages, RevTex, 6 figure
Preheating of the nonminimally coupled inflaton field
We investigate preheating of an inflaton field coupled nonminimally to
a spacetime curvature. In the case of a self-coupling inflaton potential
, the dynamics of preheating changes by the effect of
the negative . We find that the nonminimal coupling works in two ways.
First, since the initial value of inflaton field for reheating becomes
smaller with the increase of , the evolution of the inflaton quanta is
delayed for fixed . Second, the oscillation of the inflaton field is
modified and the nonadiabatic change around occurs significantly. That
makes the resonant band of the fluctuation field wider. Especially for strong
coupling regimes , the growth of the inflaton flutuation is
dominated by the resonance due to the nonminimal coupling, which leads to the
significant enhancement of low momentum modes. Although the final variance of
the inflaton fluctuation does notchange significantly compared with the
minimally coupled case, we have found that the energy transfer from the
homogeneous inflaton to created particles efficiently occurs for .Comment: 13pages, 11figure
Phases of Chiral Gauge Theories
We discuss the behavior of two non-supersymmetric chiral SU(N) gauge
theories, involving fermions in the symmetric and antisymmetric two-index
tensor representations respectively. In addition to global anomaly matching, we
employ a recently proposed inequality constraint on the number of effective low
energy (massless) degrees of freedom of a theory, based on the thermodynamic
free energy. Several possible zero temperature phases are consistent with the
constraints. A simple picture for the phase structure emerges if these theories
choose the phase, consistent with global anomaly matching, that minimizes the
massless degree of freedom count defined through the free energy. This idea
suggests that confinement with the preservation of the global symmetries
through the formation of massless composite fermions is in general not
preferred. While our discussion is restricted mainly to bilinear condensate
formation, higher dimensional condensates are considered for one case. We
conclude by commenting briefly on two related supersymmetric chiral theories.Comment: 23 pages, 2 figures, ReVTeX, improved forma
Particle production in the oscillating inflation model
We investigate the particle production of a scalar field coupled to an
inflaton field () in the {\it oscillating inflation}
model, which was recently proposed by Damour and Mukhanov. Although the
fluctuation of the field can be effectively enhanced during a stage of
the oscillating inflation, the maximum fluctuation is suppressed as the
critical value which indicates the scale of the core part of the
inflaton potential decreases, in taking into account the back reaction effect
of created particles. As for the particle production, we find that
larger values of the coupling constant are required to lead to an efficient
parametric resonance with the decrease of , because an effective mass
of inflaton around the minimum of its potential becomes larger. However, it is
possible to generate the superheavy particle whose mass is greater than
GeV, which would result in an important consequence for the GUT
baryogenesis.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figure
Investigations of Pairing in Anyon Systems
We investigate pairing instabilities in the Fermi-liquid-like state of a
single species of anyons. We describe the anyons as Fermions interacting with a
Chern-Simons gauge field and consider the weak coupling limit where their
statistics approaches that of Fermions. We show that, within the conventional
BCS approach, due to induced repulsive Coulomb and current-current
interactions, the attractive Aharonov-Bohm interaction is not sufficient to
generate a gap in the Fermion spectrum.Comment: (11 pages, 2 Figures not included
Effective action of magnetic monopole in three-dimensional electrodynamics with massless matter and gauge theories of superconductivity
We compute one-loop effective action of magnetic monopole in
three-dimensional electrodynamics of massless bosons and fermions and find that
it contains an infrared logarithm. So, when the number of massless matter
species is sufficiently large, monopoles are suppressed and in the weak
coupling limit charged particles are unconfined. This result provides some
support to gauge theories of high-temperature superconductors. It also provides
a mechanism by which interlayer tunneling of excitations with one unit of the
ordinary electric charge can be suppressed while that of a doubly charged
object is allowed.Comment: 8 pages, LATEX, UCLA/93/TEP/41 (the last sentence of the paragraph

Renormalization of nonequilibrium dynamics in FRW cosmology
We derive the renormalized nonequilibrium equations of motion for a scalar
field and its quantum back reaction in a conformally flat
Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. We use a fully covariant formalism
proposed by us recently for handling numerically and analytically
nonequilibrium dynamics in one-loop approximation. The system is assumed to be
in a conformal vacuum state initially. We use dimensional regularization; we
find that the counter terms can be chosen independent of the initial conditions
though the divergent leading order graphs do depend on them.Comment: 14 pages, RevTeX, some obvious typos correcte
Study of internal structures of 9,10Be and 10B in scattering of 4He from 9Be
A study of inelastic scattering and single-particle transfer reactions was
performed by an alpha beam at 63 MeV on a 9$Be target. Angular distributions of
the differential cross sections for the 9Be(4He,4He')9Be*, 9Be(4He,3He)10Be and
9Be(4He,t)10B reactions were measured. Experimental angular distributions of
the differential cross sections for the ground state and a few low-lying states
were analyzed in the framework of the optical model, coupled channels and
distorted-wave Born approximation. An analysis of the obtained spectroscopic
factors was performed.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, regular paper, mispritns are corrected
