Anomalies, Fayet-Iliopoulos terms and the consistency of orbifold field theories
We study the consistency of orbifold field theories and clarify to what
extent the condition of having an anomaly-free spectrum of zero-modes is
sufficient to guarantee it. Preservation of gauge invariance at the quantum
level is possible, although at the price, in general, of introducing operators
that break the 5d local parity. These operators are, however, perfectly
consistent with the orbifold projection. We also clarify the relation between
localized Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) terms and anomalies. These terms can be
consistently added, breaking neither local supersymmetry nor the gauge
symmetry. In the framework of supergravity the localized FI term arises as the
boundary completion of a bulk interaction term: given the bulk Lagrangian the
FI is fixed by gauge invariance.Comment: 31 pages, 1 figure. v2: some typos corrected, references adde
Mixed-symmetry tensor conserved currents and AdS/CFT correspondence
We present the full list of conserved currents built of two massless spinor
fields in Minkowski space and their derivatives multiplied by Clifford algebra
elements. The currents have particular mixed-symmetry type described by Young
diagrams with one row and one column of arbitrary lengths and heights. Along
with Yukawa-like totally antisymmetric currents the complete set of constructed
currents exactly matches the spectrum of AdS mixed-symmetry fields arising in
the generalized Flato-Fronsdal theorem for two spinor singletons. As a
by-product, we formulate and study general properties of primary fields and
conserved currents of mixed-symmetry type.Comment: 17 pages; v2: typos corrected, clarifications and refs added; v3:

Patient perspectives of managing fatigue in ankylosing spondylitis, and views on potential interventions: a qualitative study
<p>Background: Fatigue is a major component of living with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), though it has been largely over-looked, and currently there are no specific agreed management strategies.</p>
<p>Methods: This qualitative exploratory study involved participants who are members of an existing population-based ankylosing spondylitis (PAS) cohort. Participants residing in South West Wales were invited to participate in a focus group to discuss; (1) effects of fatigue, (2) self-management strategies and (3) potential future interventions. The focus groups were audio-recorded and the transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis.</p>
<p>Results: Participants consisted of 3 males/4 females (group 1) and 4 males/3 females (group 2), aged between 35 and 73 years (mean age 53 years). Three main themes were identified: (1) The effects of fatigue were multi-dimensional with participants expressing feelings of being ‘drained’ (physical), ‘upset’ (emotional) and experiencing ‘low-mood’ (psychological); (2) The most commonly reported self-management strategy for fatigue was a balanced combination of activity (exercise) and rest. Medication was reluctantly taken due to side-effects and worries over dependency; (3) Participants expressed a preference for psychological therapies rather than pharmacological for managing fatigue. Information on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was received with interest, with recommendations for delivery in a group format with the option of distance-based delivery for people who were not able to attend a group course.</p>
<p>Conclusions: Patients frequently try and manage their fatigue without any formal guidance or support. Our research indicates there is a need for future research to focus on psychological interventions to address the multi-faceted aspects of fatigue in AS.</p>
Automorphic Instanton Partition Functions on Calabi-Yau Threefolds
We survey recent results on quantum corrections to the hypermultiplet moduli
space M in type IIA/B string theory on a compact Calabi-Yau threefold X, or,
equivalently, the vector multiplet moduli space in type IIB/A on X x S^1. Our
main focus lies on the problem of resumming the infinite series of D-brane and
NS5-brane instantons, using the mathematical machinery of automorphic forms. We
review the proposal that whenever the low-energy theory in D=3 exhibits an
arithmetic "U-duality" symmetry G(Z) the total instanton partition function
arises from a certain unitary automorphic representation of G, whose Fourier
coefficients reproduce the BPS-degeneracies. For D=4, N=2 theories on R^3 x S^1
we argue that the relevant automorphic representation falls in the quaternionic
discrete series of G, and that the partition function can be realized as a
holomorphic section on the twistor space Z over M. We also offer some comments
on the close relation with N=2 wall crossing formulae.Comment: 25 pages, contribution to the proceedings of the workshop "Algebra,

Superconformal symmetry and maximal supergravity in various dimensions
In this paper we explore the relation between conformal superalgebras with 64
supercharges and maximal supergravity theories in three, four and six
dimensions using twistorial oscillator techniques. The massless fields of N=8
supergravity in four dimensions were shown to fit into a CPT-self-conjugate
doubleton supermultiplet of the conformal superalgebra SU(2,2|8) a long time
ago. We show that the fields of maximal supergravity in three dimensions can
similarly be fitted into the super singleton multiplet of the conformal
superalgebra OSp(16|4,R), which is related to the doubleton supermultiplet of
SU(2,2|8) by dimensional reduction. Moreover, we construct the ultra-short
supermultiplet of the six-dimensional conformal superalgebra OSp(8*|8) and show
that its component fields can be organized in an on-shell superfield. The
ultra-short OSp(8*|8) multiplet reduces to the doubleton supermultiplet of
SU(2,2|8) upon dimensional reduction. We discuss the possibility of a chiral
maximal (4,0) six-dimensional supergravity theory with USp(8) R-symmetry that
reduces to maximal supergravity in four dimensions and is different from
six-dimensional (2,2) maximal supergravity, whose fields cannot be fitted into
a unitary supermultiplet of a simple conformal superalgebra. Such an
interacting theory would be the gravitational analog of the (2,0) theory.Comment: 54 pages, PDFLaTeX, Section 5 and several references added. Version

Introduction to supersymmetric spin networks
In this paper we give a general introduction to supersymmetric spin networks.
Its construction has a direct interpretation in context of the representation
theory of the superalgebra. In particular we analyze a special kind of spin
networks with superalgebra . It turns out that the set of
corresponding spin network states forms an orthogonal basis of the Hilbert
space \cal L\mit^2(\cal A\mit/\cal G), and this argument holds even in the
q-deformed case. The spin networks are also discussed briefly. We
expect they could provide useful techniques to quantum supergravity and gauge
field theories from the point of non-perturbative view.Comment: 27 pages, 16 eps figures. Based on the talk given at Marcel Grossmann
