Buried heterostructure vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with semiconductor mirrors
We report a buried heterostructure vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser
fabricated by epitaxial regrowth over an InGaAs quantum well gain medium. The
regrowth technique enables microscale lateral confinement that preserves a high
cavity quality factor (loaded 4000) and eliminates parasitic
charging effects found in existing approaches. Under optimal spectral overlap
between gain medium and cavity mode (achieved here at = 40 K) lasing was
obtained with an incident optical power as low as = 10 mW

Negative Differential Resistance Induced by Mn Substitution at SrRuO3/Nb:SrTiO3 Schottky Interfaces
We observed a strong modulation in the current-voltage characteristics of
SrRuO/Nb:SrTiO Schottky junctions by Mn substitution in SrRuO,
which induces a metal-insulator transition in bulk. The temperature dependence
of the junction ideality factor indicates an increased spatial inhomogeneity of
the interface potential with substitution. Furthermore, negative differential
resistance was observed at low temperatures, indicating the formation of a
resonant state by Mn substitution. By spatially varying the position of the Mn
dopants across the interface with single unit cell control, we can isolate the
origin of this resonant state to the interface SrRuO layer. These results
demonstrate a conceptually different approach to controlling interface states
by utilizing the highly sensitive response of conducting perovskites to
impurities
Nanometer scale electronic reconstruction at the interface between LaVO3 and LaVO4
Electrons at interfaces, driven to minimize their free energy, are
distributed differently than in bulk. This can be dramatic at interfaces
involving heterovalent compounds. Here we profile an abrupt interface between V
3d2 LaVO3 and V 3d0 LaVO4 using electron energy loss spectroscopy. Although no
bulk phase of LaVOx with a V 3d1 configuration exists, we find a nanometer-wide
region of V 3d1 at the LaVO3/LaVO4 interface, rather than a mixture of V 3d0
and V 3d2. The two-dimensional sheet of 3d1 electrons is a prototypical
electronic reconstruction at an interface between competing ground states.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
Solvable senescence model with positive mutations
We build upon our previous analytical results for the Penna model of
senescence to include positive mutations. We investigate whether a small but
non-zero positive mutation rate gives qualitatively different results to the
traditional Penna model in which no positive mutations are considered. We find
that the high-lifespan tail of the distribution is radically changed in
structure, but that there is not much effect on the bulk of the population. Th
e mortality plateau that we found previously for a stochastic generalization of
the Penna model is stable to a small positive mutation rate.Comment: 3 figure
Higher Fock State Contributions to the Generalized Parton Distribution of Pion
We discuss the higher Fock state (q \bar q g) contributions to the nonzero
value of the pion GPD at the crossover point x = zeta between the DGLAP and
ERBL regions. Using the phenomenological light-front constituent quark model,
we confirm that the higher Fock state contributions indeed give a nonzero value
of the GPD at the crossover point. Iterating the light-front quark model wave
function of the lowest q \bar q Fock state with the Bethe-Salpeter kernel
corresponding to the one-gluon-exchange, we include all possible time-ordered q
\bar q g Fock state contributions and obtain the pion GPD satisfying necessary
sum rules and continuity conditions.Comment: References adde
Ultrasound mapping of lymph node and subcutaneous metastases in patients with cutaneous melanoma: Results of a prospective multicenter study
Background: Ultrasound (sonography, B-mode sonography, ultrasonography) examination improves the sensitivity in more than 25% compared to the clinical palpation, especially after surgery on the regional lymph node area. Objective: To evaluate the distribution of metastases during follow-up in the draining lymph node areas from the scar of primary to regional lymph nodes ( head and neck, supraclavicular, axilla, infraclavicular, groin) in patients with cutaneous melanoma with or without sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) or former elective or consecutive complete lymph node dissection in case of positive sentinel lymph node (CLND). Methods: Prospective multicenter study of the Departments of Dermatology of the Universities of Homburg/Saar, Tubingen and Munich (Germany) in which the distribution of lymph node and subcutaneous metastases were mapped from the scar of primary to the lymphatic drainage region in 53 melanoma patients ( 23 women, 30 men; median age: 64 years; median tumor thickness: 1.99 mm) with known primary, visible lymph nodes or subcutaneous metastases proven by ultrasound and histopathology during the follow-up. Results: Especially in the axilla, infraclavicular region and groin the metastases were not limited to the anatomic lymph node regions. In 5 patients (9.4%) ( 4 of them were in stage IV) lymph node metastases were not located in the corresponding lymph node area. 32 patients without former SLNB had a time range between melanoma excision and lymph node metastases of 31 months ( median), 21 patients with SLNB had 18 months ( p < 0.005). In 11 patients with positive SLNB the time range was 17 months, in 10 patients with negative SLNB 21 months ( p < 0.005); in 32 patients with CLND the time range was 31 m< 0.005). In thinner melanomas lymph node metastases occurred later ( p < 0.05). Conclusions: After surgery of cutaneous melanoma, SLNB and CLND the lymphatic drainage can show significant changes which should be considered in clinical and ultrasound follow-up examinations. Especially for high-risk melanoma patients follow-up examinations should be performed at intervals of 3 months in the first years. Gravitational Waves from Axisymmetric, Rotational Stellar Core Collapse
We have carried out an extensive set of two-dimensional, axisymmetric,
purely-hydrodynamic calculations of rotational stellar core collapse with a
realistic, finite-temperature nuclear equation of state and realistic massive
star progenitor models. For each of the total number of 72 different
simulations we performed, the gravitational wave signature was extracted via
the quadrupole formula in the slow-motion, weak-field approximation. We
investigate the consequences of variation in the initial ratio of rotational
kinetic energy to gravitational potential energy and in the initial degree of
differential rotation. Furthermore, we include in our model suite progenitors
from recent evolutionary calculations that take into account the effects of
rotation and magnetic torques. For each model, we calculate gravitational
radiation wave forms, characteristic wave strain spectra, energy spectra, final
rotational profiles, and total radiated energy. In addition, we compare our
model signals with the anticipated sensitivities of the 1st- and 2nd-generation
LIGO detectors coming on line. We find that most of our models are detectable

Self-reported domain-specific and accelerometer-based physical activity and sedentary behaviour in relation to psychological distress among an urban Asian population
Background: The interpretation of previous studies on the association of physical activity and sedentary behaviour with psychological health is limited by the use of mostly self-reported physical activity and sedentary behaviour, and a focus on Western populations. We aimed to explore the association of self-reported and devise-based measures of physical activity and sedentary behaviour domains on psychological distress in an urban multi-ethnic Asian population.
Methods: From a population-based cross-sectional study of adults aged 18-79 years, data were used from an overall sample (n = 2653) with complete self-reported total physical activity/sedentary behaviour and domain-specific physical activity data, and a subsample (n = 703) with self-reported domain-specific sedentary behaviour and accelerometry data. Physical activity and sedentary behaviour data were collected using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), a domain-specific sedentary behaviour questionnaire and accelerometers. The Kessler Screening Scale (K6) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) were used to assess psychological distress. Logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals, adjusted for socio-demographic and lifestyle characteristics.
Results: The sample comprised 45.0% men (median age = 45.0 years). The prevalence of psychological distress based on the K6 and GHQ-12 was 8.4% and 21.7%, respectively. In the adjusted model, higher levels of self-reported moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were associated with significantly higher odds for K6 (OR = 1.47 [1.03-2.10]; p-trend = 0.03) but not GHQ-12 (OR = 0.97 [0.77-1.23]; p-trend = 0.79), when comparing the highest with the lowest tertile. Accelerometry-assessed MVPA was not significantly associated with K6 (p-trend = 0.50) nor GHQ-12 (p-trend = 0.74). The highest tertile of leisure-time physical activity, but not work- or transport-domain activity, was associated with less psychological distress using K6 (OR = 0.65 [0.43-0.97]; p-trend = 0.02) and GHQ-12 (OR = 0.72 [0.55-0.93]; p-trend = 0.01). Self-reported sedentary behaviour was not associated with K6 (p-trend = 0.90) and GHQ-12 (p-trend = 0.33). The highest tertile of accelerometry-assessed sedentary behaviour was associated with significantly higher odds for K6 (OR = 1.93 [1.00-3.75]; p-trend = 0.04), but not GHQ-12 (OR = 1.34 [0.86-2.08]; p-trend = 0.18).
Conclusions: Higher levels of leisure-time physical activity and lower levels of accelerometer-based sedentary behaviour were associated with lower psychological distress. This study underscores the importance of assessing accelerometer-based and domain-specific activity in relation to mental health, instead of solely focusing on total volume of activity
