Shielding of absorbing objects in collisionless flowing plasma
The electrostatic shielding of a charged absorbing object (dust grain) in a
flowing collisionless plasma is investigated by using the linearized kinetic
equation for plasma ions with a point-sink term accounting for ion absorption
on the object. The effect of absorption on the attractive part of the grain
potential is investigated. For subthermal ion flows, the attractive part of the
grain potential in the direction perpendicular to the ion flow can be
significantly reduced or completely destroyed, depending on the absorption
rate. For superthermal ion flows, however, the effect of absorption on the
grain attraction in the direction perpendicular to the ion flow is shown to be
exponentially weak. It is thus argued that, in the limit of superthermal ion
flow, the effect of absorption on the grain shielding potential can be safely
ignored for typical grain sizes relevant to complex plasmas.Comment: 25 pages, 3 figure
Leader-follower Game in VMI System with Limited Production Capacity Considering Wholesale and Retail Prices
VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory) is a widely used cooperative inventory policy in supply chains in which each enterprise has its autonomy in pricing. This paper discusses a leader-follower Stackelberg game in a VMI supply chain where the manufacturer, as a leader, produces a single product with a limited production capacity and delivers it at a wholesale price to multiple different retailers, as the followers, who then sell the product in dispersed and independent markets at retail prices. An algorithm is then developed to determine the equilibrium of the Stackelberg game. Finally, a numerical study is conducted to understand the influence of the Stackelberg equilibrium and market related parameters on the profits of the manufacturer and its retailers. Through the numerical example, our research demonstrates that: (a) the market related parameters have significant influence on the manufacturer’ and its retailers’ profits; (b) a retailer’s profit may not be necessarily lowered when it is charged with a higher inventory cost by the manufacturer; (c) the equilibrium of the Stackelberg equilibrium benefits the manufacturer.Stackelberg Game;Supply Chain;Vendor Managed Inventory
Zero-bias anomalies in electrochemically fabricated nanojunctions
A streamlined technique for the electrochemical fabrication of metal
nanojunctions (MNJs) between lithographically defined electrodes is presented.
The first low-temperature transport measurements in such structures reveal
suppression of the conductance near zero-bias. The size of the zero-bias
anomaly (ZBA) depends strongly on the fabrication electrochemistry and the
dimensions of the resulting MNJ. We present evidence that the nonperturbative
ZBA in atomic-scale junctions is due to a density of states suppression in the
leads.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Information filtering via Iterative Refinement
With the explosive growth of accessible information, expecially on the
Internet, evaluation-based filtering has become a crucial task. Various systems
have been devised aiming to sort through large volumes of information and
select what is likely to be more relevant. In this letter we analyse a new
ranking method, where the reputation of information providers is determined
self-consistently.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication on Europhysics Letter
First-principles calculations of a high-pressure synthesized compound PtC
First-principles density-functional method is used to study the recently
high-pressure synthesized compound PtC. It is confirmed by our calculations
that the platinum carbide has a zinc-blende ground-state phase at zero pressure
and the rock-salt structure is a high-pressure phase. The theoretical
transition pressure from zinc-blende to rock-salt is determined to be 52GPa.
Furthermore, our calculation shows the possibility that the experimentally
synthesized PtC by Ono et al. under high pressure condition might undergo a
transition from rock-salt structure to zinc-blende after the pressure quench to
ambient condition.Comment: A revised versio
Opinion diversity and community formation in adaptive networks
It is interesting and of significant importance to investigate how network
structures co-evolve with opinions. The existing models of such co-evolution
typically lead to the final states where network nodes either reach a global
consensus or break into separated communities, each of which holding its own
community consensus. Such results, however, can hardly explain the richness of
real-life observations that opinions are always diversified with no global or
even community consensus, and people seldom, if not never, totally cut off
themselves from dissenters. In this article, we show that, a simple model
integrating consensus formation, link rewiring and opinion change allows
complex system dynamics to emerge, driving the system into a dynamic
equilibrium with co-existence of diversified opinions. Specifically, similar
opinion holders may form into communities yet with no strict community
consensus; and rather than being separated into disconnected communities,
different communities remain to be interconnected by non-trivial proportion of
inter-community links. More importantly, we show that the complex dynamics may
lead to different numbers of communities at steady state with a given tolerance
between different opinion holders. We construct a framework for theoretically
analyzing the co-evolution process. Theoretical analysis and extensive
simulation results reveal some useful insights into the complex co-evolution
process, including the formation of dynamic equilibrium, the phase transition
between different steady states with different numbers of communities, and the
dynamics between opinion distribution and network modularity, etc.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, Journa
