Improved three-dimensional color-gradient lattice Boltzmann model for immiscible multiphase flows
In this paper, an improved three-dimensional color-gradient lattice Boltzmann
(LB) model is proposed for simulating immiscible multiphase flows. Compared
with the previous three-dimensional color-gradient LB models, which suffer from
the lack of Galilean invariance and considerable numerical errors in many cases
owing to the error terms in the recovered macroscopic equations, the present
model eliminates the error terms and therefore improves the numerical accuracy
and enhances the Galilean invariance. To validate the proposed model, numerical
simulation are performed. First, the test of a moving droplet in a uniform flow
field is employed to verify the Galilean invariance of the improved model.
Subsequently, numerical simulations are carried out for the layered two-phase
flow and three-dimensional Rayleigh-Taylor instability. It is shown that, using
the improved model, the numerical accuracy can be significantly improved in
comparison with the color-gradient LB model without the improvements. Finally,
the capability of the improved color-gradient LB model for simulating dynamic
multiphase flows at a relatively large density ratio is demonstrated via the
simulation of droplet impact on a solid surface.Comment: 9 Figure

GPER-induced signaling is essential for the survival of breast cancer stem cells.
G protein-coupled estrogen receptor-1 (GPER), a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, mediates estrogen-induced proliferation of normal and malignant breast epithelial cells. However, its role in breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs) remains unclear. Here we showed greater expression of GPER in BCSCs than non-BCSCs of three patient-derived xenografts of ER- /PR+ breast cancers. GPER silencing reduced stemness features of BCSCs as reflected by reduced mammosphere forming capacity in vitro, and tumor growth in vivo with decreased BCSC populations. Comparative phosphoproteomics revealed greater GPER-mediated PKA/BAD signaling in BCSCs. Activation of GPER by its ligands, including tamoxifen (TMX), induced phosphorylation of PKA and BAD-Ser118 to sustain BCSC characteristics. Transfection with a dominant-negative mutant BAD (Ser118Ala) led to reduced cell survival. Taken together, GPER and its downstream signaling play a key role in maintaining the stemness of BCSCs, suggesting that GPER is a potential therapeutic target for eradicating BCSCs
Development of variable renewable energy policy in developing countries: A case study of Sri Lanka
Copyright © 2018 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd. Development of policy for variable renewable energy (VRE), such as wind and solar power, could be difficult in developing countries that have limited capacity, limited technical, and fiscal resources. Sri Lanka is such a case. Although Sri Lanka has a potential to develop VRE, the development was neither sufficient nor smooth. This study explores the development of VRE in the 2000s and analyses the impacts of the cost reflective feed-in-tariffs (FITs). The study finds that VRE public policy in Sri Lanka can be improved in a number of ways: better coordination among government agencies; technology specific policy and accommodation of cost dynamics; and redesign of subsidy policies. Generally, the governance mechanism suggested in this research is an innovated structure to coordinate multiple government agencies by specifying policies according to technologies and redesigning the subsidy structures by accommodating the cost dynamics
Phenomenological Scaling of Rapidity Dependence for Anisotropic Flows in 25 MeV/nucleon Ca + Ca by Quantum Molecular Dynamics Model
Anisotropic flows (, , and ) of light fragments up till
the mass number 4 as a function of rapidity have been studied for 25
MeV/nucleon Ca + Ca at large impact parameters by Quantum
Molecular Dynamics model. A phenomenological scaling behavior of rapidity
dependent flow parameters (n = 1, 2, 3 and 4) has been found as a
function of mass number plus a constant term, which may arise from the
interplay of collective and random motions. In addition, keeps
almost independent of rapidity and remains a rough constant of 1/2 for all
light fragments.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Effective continuous model for surface states and thin films of three dimensional topological insulators
Two-dimensional effective continuous models are derived for the surface
states and thin films of the three-dimensional topological insulator (3DTI).
Starting from an effective model for 3DTI based on the first principles
calculation [Zhang \emph{et al}, Nat. Phys. 5, 438 (2009)], we present
solutions for both the surface states in a semi-infinite boundary condition and
in the thin film with finite thickness. An effective continuous model was
derived for surface states and the thin film 3DTI. The coupling between
opposite topological surfaces and structure inversion asymmetry (SIA) give rise
to gapped Dirac hyperbolas with Rashba-like splittings in energy spectrum.
Besides, the SIA leads to asymmetric distributions of wavefunctions along the
film growth direction, making some branches in the energy spectra much harder
than others to be probed by light. These features agree well with the recent
angle-resolved photoemission spectra of BiSe films grown on SiC
substrate [Zhang et al, arXiv: 0911.3706]. More importantly, we use the
effective model to fit the experimental data and determine the model
parameters. The result indicates that the thin film BiSe lies in
quantum spin Hall region based on the calculation of the Chern number and the
invariant. In addition, strong SIA always intends to destroy the
quantum spin Hall state.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, references are update
Scaling of Anisotropic Flows and Nuclear Equation of State in Intermediate Energy Heavy Ion Collisions
Elliptic flow () and hexadecupole flow () of light clusters have
been studied in details for 25 MeV/nucleon Kr + Sn at large
impact parameters by Quantum Molecular Dynamics model with different potential
parameters. Four parameter sets which include soft or hard equation of state
(EOS) with/without symmetry energy term are used. Both number-of-nucleon ()
scaling of the elliptic flow versus transverse momentum () and the scaling
of versus have been demonstrated for the light clusters
in all above calculation conditions. It was also found that the ratio of
keeps a constant of 1/2 which is independent of for all the
light fragments. By comparisons among different combinations of EOS and
symmetry potential term, the results show that the above scaling behaviors are
solid which do not depend the details of potential, while the strength of flows
is sensitive to EOS and symmetry potential term.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
