International audienceSupercritical carbon dioxide has found strong interest as a reaction medium recently.1,2 As an alternative to organic solvents, compressed carbon dioxide is toxicologically harmless, nonflammable, inexpensive, and environmentally benign.3 Its accessible critical temperature and pressure (Tc ) 31 °C, Pc ) 7.38 MPa, Fc ) 0.468 g cm-3)4 and the possibility of tuning the solvent-specific properties between the ones of liquid and gas are very attractive

Fully adaptive multiresolution schemes for strongly degenerate parabolic equations with discontinuous flux

A fully adaptive finite volume multiresolution scheme for one-dimensional strongly degenerate parabolic equations with discontinuous flux is presented. The numerical scheme is based on a finite volume discretization using the Engquist--Osher approximation for the flux and explicit time--stepping. An adaptivemultiresolution scheme with cell averages is then used to speed up CPU time and meet memory requirements. A particular feature of our scheme is the storage of the multiresolution representation of the solution in a dynamic graded tree, for the sake of data compression and to facilitate navigation. Applications to traffic flow with driver reaction and a clarifier--thickener model illustrate the efficiency of this method

A multilevel adaptive multiscale finite volume method for steady compressible flows

An implicit multilevel finite volume solver on adaptively refined quadtree meshes is presented for the solution of steady state flow problems. The nonlinear problem arising from the implicit time discretization is solved by an adaptive FAS multigrid method. Local grid adaptation is performed by means of a multiscale-based strategy. For this purpose data of the flow field are decomposed in coarse grid information and a sequence of detail coefficients that describe the difference between two refinement levels and reveal insight in the local regularity behavior of the solution. Here wavelet techniques are employed for the multiscale analysis. The key idea of the present work is to use the transfer operators of the multiscale analysis for the prolongation and restriction operator in the FAS cycle. The efficiency of the solver is investigated by means of an inviscid 2D flow over a bump

Facile synthesis of titania/hyperbranched polyglycidol nanohybrids with tunable morphologies: from solid spheres, capsules to tubes

Titania/Hyperbranched polyglycidol (HBP) nanohybrids with tunable morphologies have been synthesized via a sol-gel process at ambient temperature. One-shot addition of varied amounts of titanium precursor tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) yields spherical titania/HBP solid particles with tunable size, while a controlled addition of TTIP results in spherical titania/HBP capsules. The average outer and inner diameters of the resultant capsules are also controllable according to the amount of TTIP via an Oswald ripening process. In addition, the modality of additional water supplied in the reaction systems can tune the morphologies of the resulting titania/HBP particles from nanocapsules to nanotubes owing to the accelerated hydrolysis rate of TTIP. The tunability in morphologies of the titania/HBP nanostructures ranging from solid spheres, capsules to tubes could be attributed to the self-assembly of a large amount of titania/HBP aggregates in a rapid, controlled and anisotropic manner, respectively. Surprisingly, by means of HBP contained in the resulting titania/ HBP nanostructures, the gold nanoparticles are in situ generated and encapsulated into titania/HBP matrix in the absence of additional reducing agent. The as- prepared gold nanoparticles functionalized titania/HBP hybrids exhibit excellent catalytic function toward the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. This strategy demonstrates a typical example for functionalizing the titania/HBP hybrids targeted to specific applications
