    Study of Ni-doping Effect of Specific Heat and Transport Properties for LaFe1-yNiyAsO0.89F0.11

    Specific heats and transport quantities of the LaFe1-yNiyAsO0.89F0.11 system have been measured, and the results are discussed together with those reported previously by our group mainly for LaFe1-yCoyAsO0.89F0.11 and LaFeAsO0.89-xF0.11+x systems. The y dependence of the electronic specific heat coefficient gamma can basically be understood by using the rigid-band picture, where Ni ions provide 2 electrons to the host conduction bands and behave as nonmagnetic impurities. The superconducting transition temperature Tc of LaFe1-yNiyAsO0.89F0.11 becomes zero, as the carrier density p (=2y+0.11) doped to LaFeAsO reaches its critical value p_c_ ~0.2. This p_c_ value of ~0.2 is commonly observed for LaFe1-yCoyAsO0.89F0.11 and LaFeAsO0.89-xF0.11+x systems, in which the relations p = x+0.11 and p = y+0.11 hold, respectively. As we pointed out previously, the critical value corresponds to the disappearance of the hole-Fermi surface. These results indicate that the carrier number solely determines the Tc value. We have not observed appreciable effects of pair breaking, which originates from the nonmagnetic impurity scattering of conduction electrons and strongly suppresses T_c_ values of systems with sign-reversing of the order parameter over the Fermi surface(s).     The career development process is one of the most important aspects of the international student experience. Providing comprehensive and culturally competent services requires institutional efforts that utilize best practices developmentally throughout the college experience and beyond. This article is based on the work of the International Student Services Committee of the National Career Development Association, especially the surveys conducted with international students, career development professional and employers. The authors focus on three major themes from the surveys: knowledge about work authorization options, impact of cultural differences on job search, and specialized career services for international students. Discussing these major themes, the authors report on best practices and future implications for supporting international student career development in the U.S. and beyond

    Spontaneous malignant mesothelioma was found in a 104-week-old male Crj:CD(SD) rat. The tumor was scattered on the surface of the lung, heart, mediastinal pleura and thoracic wall and metastasized to the alveolar septa. Histopathologically, small flattened or cuboidal tumor cells proliferated with stroma, formed almost normal papillary structures and reacted positively to colloidal iron stain and immunohistochemical staining for mesothelin. Round hyalinous stromata were pronounced, which is a characteristic feature, and the possible reason for this is as follows; at first, a small amount of collagen fibers was formed in the center of the clusters of several tumor cells, and then the cell clusters expanded like balloons with an increase in the collagen fibers

    Phylogenomic Analyses Reveal the Evolutionary Origin of the Inhibin Ξ±-Subunit, a Unique TGFΞ² Superfamily Antagonist

    Transforming growth factor-beta (TGFΞ²) homologues form a diverse superfamily that arose early in animal evolution and control cellular function through membrane-spanning, conserved serine-threonine kinases (RII and RI receptors). Activin and inhibin are related dimers within the TGFΞ² superfamily that share a common Ξ²-subunit. The evolution of the inhibin Ξ±-subunit created the only antagonist within the TGFΞ² superfamily and the only member known to act as an endocrine hormone. This hormone introduced a new level of complexity and control to vertebrate reproductive function. The novel functions of the inhibin Ξ±-subunit appear to reflect specific insertion-deletion changes within the inhibin Ξ²-subunit that occurred during evolution. Using phylogenomic analysis, we correlated specific insertions with the acquisition of distinct functions that underlie the phenotypic complexity of vertebrate reproductive processes. This phylogenomic approach presents a new way of understanding the structure-function relationships between inhibin, activin, and the larger TGFΞ² superfamily

    VEGF Induces More Severe Cerebrovascular Dysplasia in Eng+/βˆ’ than in Alk1+/βˆ’ Mice

    Brain arteriovenous malformations (BAVMs) are an important cause of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) in young adults. A small percent of BAVMs is due to hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia 1 and 2 (HHT1 and 2), which are caused by mutations in two genes involved in transforming growth factor-Ξ² signaling: endoglin (Eng), and activin-like kinase 1 (Alk1). The BAVM phenotype has incomplete penetrance in HHT patients, and the mechanism is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that a β€œresponse-to-injury” triggers abnormal vascular (dysplasia) development, using Eng and Alk1 haploinsufficient mice. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) expressing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was used to mimic the injury conditions. VEGF overexpression caused a similar degree of angiogenesis in the brain of all groups, except that the cortex of Alk1+/βˆ’ mice had a 33% higher capillary density than other groups. There were different levels of cerebrovascular dysplasia observed in haploinsufficient mice (Eng+/βˆ’β€‰> Alk1+/βˆ’), which simulates the relative penetrance of BAVM in HHT patients (HHT1 > HHT2). Few dysplastic capillaries were observed in AAV-LacZ-injected mice. Our data indicate that both angiogenic stimulation and genetic alteration are necessary for the development of vascular dysplasia, suggesting that anti-angiogenic therapies might be adapted to slow the progression of the disease and decrease the risk of spontaneous ICH

    Helicobacter pylori cagA gene variants in Malaysians of different ethnicity

    We have defined DNA repeat variability in the 3β€²-terminus of the cagA gene of Helicobacter pylori strains from Malaysian patients of different ethnicities. We identified different alleles based on the EPIYA repeats. cagA types A-B-D and A-B-B-D are more similar to the sequence of Japanese strains, whereas cagA types A-B-C, A-B-C-C, A-B and A-C displayed similarity to strain 26695 sequences. A significant association was found between cagA genotypes and patients’ ethnicity, with cagA type A-B-D being predominantly isolated from Chinese patients and cagA type A-B-C from Malays and Indians. Our data further corroborate the possibility that variant biological activity of CagA may affect the host specificity and/or pathogenicity of H. pylori

    Immunostaining of thymidylate synthase and p53 for predicting chemoresistance to S-1/cisplatin in gastric cancer

    High expression of thymidylate synthase (TS) and inactivation of p53 are allegedly associated with chemoresistance. The authors evaluated TS and p53 expression in gastric cancer treated with neoadjuvant S-1/cisplatin chemotherapy. Paraffin sections of pretreatment biopsy and surgical specimens from 41 gastric cancers were immunostained for TS and p53 protein after appropriate antigen retrieval. Fifty-one cases without neoadjuvant chemotherapy were also studied. In the pretreatment biopsies, high expression of TS was seen in 8% of the histologic responders, in 28% of the nonresponders and in 31% of the controls. High expression of p53 was observed in 56% of the nonresponders, but in 8% of the responders and in 29% of the controls (P<0.01 and P<0.05, respectively). The TS- and/or p53-high phenotype was seen in 76% of the nonresponders and in 54% of the controls, but in 8% of the responders (P<0.0001 and P<0.005, respectively). The data of the surgical specimens were consistent with those of the pretreatment biopsies. These results suggest that immunostaining for TS and p53 protein is useful for pretreatment selection of gastric cancer patients unresponsive to S-1/cisplatin chemotherapy
