    The definability criterions for convex projective polyhedral reflection groups

    Following Vinberg, we find the criterions for a subgroup generated by reflections \Gamma \subset \SL^{\pm}(n+1,\mathbb{R}) and its finite-index subgroups to be definable over A\mathbb{A} where A\mathbb{A} is an integrally closed Noetherian ring in the field R\mathbb{R}. We apply the criterions for groups generated by reflections that act cocompactly on irreducible properly convex open subdomains of the nn-dimensional projective sphere. This gives a method for constructing injective group homomorphisms from such Coxeter groups to \SL^{\pm}(n+1,\mathbb{Z}). Finally we provide some examples of \SL^{\pm}(n+1,\mathbb{Z})-representations of such Coxeter groups. In particular, we consider simplicial reflection groups that are isomorphic to hyperbolic simplicial groups and classify all the conjugacy classes of the reflection subgroups in \SL^{\pm}(n+1,\mathbb{R}) that are definable over Z\mathbb{Z}.     Signature of high temperature superconductivity in electron doped Sr2IrO4

    Sr2IrO4 was predicted to be a high temperature superconductor upon electron doping since it highly resembles the cuprates in crystal structure, electronic structure and magnetic coupling constants. Here we report a scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) study of Sr2IrO4 with surface electron doping by depositing potassium (K) atoms. At the 0.5-0.7 monolayer (ML) K coverage, we observed a sharp, V-shaped gap with about 95% loss of density of state (DOS) at EFand visible coherence peaks. The gap magnitude is 25-30 meV for 0.5-0.6 ML K coverage and it closes around 50 K. These behaviors exhibit clear signature of superconductivity. Furthermore, we found that with increased electron doping, the system gradually evolves from an insulating state to a normal metallic state, via a pseudogap-like state and possible superconducting state. Our data suggest possible high temperature superconductivity in electron doped Sr2IrO4, and its remarkable analogy to the cuprates.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

    Dynamics of tilt-based browsing on mobile devices

    A tilt-controlled photo browsing method for small mobile devices is presented. The implementation uses continuous inputs from an accelerometer, and a multimodal (visual, audio and vibrotactile) display coupled with the states of this model. The model is based on a simple physical model, with its characteristics shaped to enhance usability. We show how the dynamics of the physical model can be shaped to make the handling qualities of the mobile device fit the browsing task. We implemented the proposed algorithm on Samsung MITs PDA with tri-axis accelerometer and a vibrotactile motor. The experiment used seven novice users browsing from 100 photos. We compare a tilt-based interaction method with a button-based browser and an iPod wheel. We discuss the usability performance and contrast this with subjective experience from the users. The iPod wheel has significantly poorer performance than button pushing or tilt interaction, despite its commercial popularity

    First axion dark matter search with toroidal geometry

    We firstly report an axion haloscope search with toroidal geometry. In this pioneering search, we exclude the axion-photon coupling gaγγg_{a\gamma\gamma} down to about 5×1085\times10^{-8} GeV1^{-1} over the axion mass range from 24.7 to 29.1 μ\mueV at a 95\% confidence level.     A non-equilibrium ortho-to-para ratio of water in the Orion PDR

    The ortho-to-para ratio (OPR) of H2_2O is thought to be sensitive to the temperature of water formation. The OPR of H2_2O is thus useful to study the formation mechanism of water. We investigate the OPR of water in the Orion PDR (Photon-dominated region), at the Orion Bar and Orion S positions, using data from {\it Herschel}/HIFI. We detect the ground-state lines of ortho- and para-H2_218^{18}O in the Orion Bar and Orion S and we estimate the column densities using LTE and non-LTE methods. Based on our calculations, the ortho-to-para ratio (OPR) in the Orion Bar is 0.1 - 0.5, which is unexpectedly low given the gas temperature of \sim 85 K, and also lower than the values measured for other interstellar clouds and protoplanetary disks. Toward Orion S, our OPR estimate is below 2. This low OPR at 2 positions in the Orion PDR is inconsistent with gas phase formation and with thermal evaporation from dust grains, but it may be explained by photodesorption

    We investigate the gauge coupling renormalization in orbifold field theories preserving 4-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry in the framework of 4-dimensional effective supergravity. As a concrete example, we consider the 5-dimensional Super-Yang-Mills theory on a slice of AdS_5.     Gauge Threshold Corrections in Warped Geometry

    We discuss the Kaluza-Klein threshold correction to low energy gauge couplings in theories with warped extra-dimension, which might be crucial for the gauge coupling unification when the warping is sizable. Explicit expressions of one-loop thresholds are derived for generic 5D gauge theory on a slice of AdS_5, where some of the bulk gauge symmetries are broken by orbifold boundary conditions and/or by bulk Higgs vacuum values.     Construction of equilibrium networks with an energy function

    We construct equilibrium networks by introducing an energy function depending on the degree of each node as well as the product of neighboring degrees. With this topological energy function, networks constitute a canonical ensemble, which follows the Boltzmann distribution for given temperature. It is observed that the system undergoes a topological phase transition from a random network to a star or a fully-connected network as the temperature is lowered. Both mean-field analysis and numerical simulations reveal strong first-order phase transitions at temperatures which decrease logarithmically with the system size. Quantitative discrepancies of the simulation results from the mean-field prediction are discussed in view of the strong first-order nature.Comment: To appear in J. Phys.
