    Laser-catalyzed spin-exchange process in a Bose-Einstein condensate

    We show theoretically that it is possible to optically control collective spin-exchange processes in spinor Bose condensates through virtual photoassociation. The interplay between optically induced spin exchange and spin-dependent collisions provides a flexible tool for the control of atomic spin dynamics, including enhanced or inhibited quantum spin oscillations, the optically-induced ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic transition, and coherent matter-wave spin conversion.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Diving Deep into Sentiment: Understanding Fine-tuned CNNs for Visual Sentiment Prediction

    Visual media are powerful means of expressing emotions and sentiments. The constant generation of new content in social networks highlights the need of automated visual sentiment analysis tools. While Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have established a new state-of-the-art in several vision problems, their application to the task of sentiment analysis is mostly unexplored and there are few studies regarding how to design CNNs for this purpose. In this work, we study the suitability of fine-tuning a CNN for visual sentiment prediction as well as explore performance boosting techniques within this deep learning setting.     Single chargino production via gluon-gluon fusion in a supersymmetric theory with an explicit R-parity violation

    We studied the production of single charginoχ~1±\tilde{\chi}_1^{\pm} accompanied by Ό∓\mu^{\mp} lepton via gluon-gluon fusion at the LHC. The numerical analysis of their production rates is carried out in the mSUGRA scenario with some typical parameter sets. The results show that the cross sections of the χ~1±Ό∓\tilde{\chi}_1^{\pm}\mu^{\mp} productions via gluon-gluon collision are in the order of 1∌1021 \sim 10^{2} femto barn quantitatively at the CERN LHC, and can be competitive with production mechanism via quark-antiquark annihilation process.Comment: LaTex file, 18 pages, 4 EPS file

    Polarization Induced Switching Effect in Graphene Nanoribbon Edge-Defect Junction

    With nonequilibrium Green's function approach combined with density functional theory, we perform an ab initio calculation to investigate transport properties of graphene nanoribbon junctions self-consistently. Tight-binding approximation is applied to model the zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) electrodes, and its validity is confirmed by comparison with GAUSSIAN03 PBC calculation of the same system. The origin of abnormal jump points usually appearing in the transmission spectrum is explained with the detailed tight-binding ZGNR band structure. Transport property of an edge defect ZGNR junction is investigated, and the tunable tunneling current can be sensitively controlled by transverse electric fields.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figure

    Spatio-Temporal Sentiment Hotspot Detection Using Geotagged Photos

    We perform spatio-temporal analysis of public sentiment using geotagged photo collections. We develop a deep learning-based classifier that predicts the emotion conveyed by an image. This allows us to associate sentiment with place. We perform spatial hotspot detection and show that different emotions have distinct spatial distributions that match expectations. We also perform temporal analysis using the capture time of the photos. Our spatio-temporal hotspot detection correctly identifies emerging concentrations of specific emotions and year-by-year analyses of select locations show there are strong temporal correlations between the predicted emotions and known events.Comment: To appear in ACM SIGSPATIAL 201

    The Nature of Quantum Hall States near the Charge Neutral Dirac Point in Graphene

    We investigate the quantum Hall (QH) states near the charge neutral Dirac point of a high mobility graphene sample in high magnetic fields. We find that the QH states at filling factors Μ=±1\nu=\pm1 depend only on the perpendicular component of the field with respect to the graphene plane, indicating them to be not spin-related. A non-linear magnetic field dependence of the activation energy gap at filling factor Μ=1\nu=1 suggests a many-body origin. We therefore propose that the Μ=0\nu=0 and ±1\pm1 states arise from the lifting of the spin and sub-lattice degeneracy of the n=0n=0 LL, respectively.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys.     Who Builds Cities in China? How Urban Investment and Development Companies Have Transformed Shanghai

    While there is general acceptance that urban governance in China is entrepreneurial in nature, little has been written about the precise ways in which Chinese cities implement entrepreneurial policies. In this article we argue that the primary agents of urban entrepreneurialism in China are urban investment and development companies (UIDCs), known in Chinese as chengtou for short. We start by defining UIDCs as a category of state‐owned enterprise, but one that is wholly owned by local (often city) governments. We note that in the literature UIDCs are generally recognized for their involvement in raising funds for projects and piling up hidden debts, but their multiple roles in urban development tend to be neglected. We introduce here four UIDCs that have been largely responsible for the transformation of Shanghai into a modern city spearheading Chinese state entrepreneurialism, and in doing so we delineate the full range of the activities of these urban business empires. We argue in particular that they represent a corporate involvement by the state in urban development—the state presenting itself in the guise of a market player, a corporate entity able to raise funds and act as if it were a private company. UIDCs are the driving force behind China's urban entrepreneurialism and are without a clear parallel elsewhere
