    Electrical properties of pulsed UV laser irradiated amorphous carbon

    Amorphous carbon films containing no hydrogen were irradiated with a pulsed UV laser in vacuum. Raman spectroscopy indicates an increase in the quantity of sp(2) clustering with the highest laser energy density and a commensurate reduction in resistivity. The reduction of resistivity is explained to be associated with thermally induced graphitization of amorphous carbon films. The high field transport is consistent with a Poole-Frenkel type transport mechanism via neutral trapping centers related to sp(2) sites which are activated under high fields. Decreasing the resistivity is an important feature for use of carbon as an electronic material. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.</p

    Theoretical analysis of magnetic coupling in sandwich clusters V_n(C_6H_6)_{n+1}

    The mechanism of ferromagnetism stability in sandwich clusters Vn_n(C6_6H6_6)n+1_{n+1} has been studied by first-principles calculation and model analysis. It is found that each of the three types of bonds between V and benzene (Bz) plays different roles. V 3dz2_{z^2} orbital, extending along the molecular axis, is weakly hybridized with Bz's HOMO-1 orbital to form the σ\sigma-bond. It is quite localized and singly occupied, which contributes 1μB\mu_B to the magnetic moment but little to the magnetic coupling of neighboring V magnetic moments. The in-plane dx2−y2_{x^2-y^2}, dxy_{xy} orbitals are hybridized with the LUMO of Bz and constitute the δ\delta-bond. This hybridization is medium and crucial to the magnetic coupling though the δ\delta states have no net contribution to the total magnetic moment. dxz_{xz}, dyz_{yz} and HOMO of Bz form a quite strong π\pi-bond to hold the molecular structure but they are inactive in magnetism because their energy levels are far away from the Fermi level. Based on the results of first-principles calculation, we point out that the ferromagnetism stability is closely related with the mechanism proposed by Kanamori and Terakura [J. Kanamori and K. Terakura, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 70, 1433 (2001)]. However, the presence of edge Bz's in the cluster introduces an important modification.     Rectification of radio frequency current in ferromagnetic nanowire

    We report the rectification of a constant wave radio frequency (RF) current by using a single-layer magnetic nanowire; a direct-current voltage is resonantly generated when the RF current flows through the nanowire. The mechanism of the rectification is discussed in terms of the spin torque diode effect reported for magnetic tunnel junction devices and the rectification is shown to be direct attributable to resonant spin wave excitation by the RF current.Comment: 20 Pages, 4 figures, submitte

    Improved methods using the reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction to detect tumour cells

    Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is increasingly used to detect small numbers of circulating tumour cells, though the clinical benefit remains controversial. The largest single contributing factor to the controversy of its value is the different approaches to sample processing. The aim of this study was to compare the sensitivity and reproducibility of RT-PCR for the detection of tumour cells after four commonly used different methods of sample processing. Using RT-PCR, one tumour cell spiked in 2 ml of whole blood was detected after analysis of separated mononuclear cell RNA, whole blood total or poly-A+RNA. No false positives were identified with any method. However, the reproducibility of tumour cell detection was reduced after isolation of the mononuclear cell fraction. Only analysis of poly-A+RNA had a sensitivity of 100% in all the cell spiking experiments. In patient blood samples, analysis of poly-A+RNA increased the number of blood samples positive for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) mRNA compared with those positive after analysis of total RNA. This may reflect high levels of cDNA reducing the efficiency of the PCR. Isolation of poly-A+RNA increases the sensitivity and reproducibility of tumour cell detection in peripheral blood. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig
