    From the Complete Yang Model to Snyder's Model, de Sitter Special Relativity and Their Duality

    By means of Dirac procedure, we re-examine Yang's quantized space-time model, its relation to Snyder's model, the de Sitter special relativity and their UV-IR duality.     Boltzmann Equation with a Large Potential in a Periodic Box

    The stability of the Maxwellian of the Boltzmann equation with a large amplitude external potential Φ\Phi has been an important open problem. In this paper, we resolve this problem with a large C3C3-potential in a periodic box Td\mathbb{T}^d, d3d \geq 3. We use [1] in LpLL^p-L^{\infty} framework to establish the well-posedness and the LL^{\infty}-stability of the Maxwellian μE(x,v)=exp{v22Φ(x)}\mu_E(x,v)=\exp\{-\frac{|v|^2}{2}-\Phi(x)\}

    A non-variational approach to nonlinear stability in stellar dynamics applied to the King model

    In previous work by Y. Guo and G. Rein, nonlinear stability of equilibria in stellar dynamics, i.e., of steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, was accessed by variational techniques. Here we propose a different, non-variational technique and use it to prove nonlinear stability of the King model against a class of spherically symmetric, dynamically accessible perturbations. This model is very important in astrophysics and was out of reach of the previous techniques

    The Euler-Lagrange Cohomology and General Volume-Preserving Systems

    We briefly introduce the conception on Euler-Lagrange cohomology groups on a symplectic manifold (M2n,ω)(\mathcal{M}^{2n}, \omega) and systematically present the general form of volume-preserving equations on the manifold from the cohomological point of view. It is shown that for every volume-preserving flow generated by these equations there is an important 2-form that plays the analog role with the Hamiltonian in the Hamilton mechanics. In addition, the ordinary canonical equations with Hamiltonian HH are included as a special case with the 2-form 1n1Hω\frac{1}{n-1} H \omega. It is studied the other volume preserving systems on (M2n,ω)({\cal M}^{2n}, \omega).     Non-magnetic pair-breaking effect on La(Fe_{1-x}Zn_{x})AsO_{0.85} studied by NMR and NQR

    75^{75}As and 139^{139}La NMR and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies on Zn-substituted LaFeAsO0.85_{0.85} have been performed to investigate the Zn-impurity effects microscopically. Although superconductivity in LaFeAsO0.85_{0.85} disappears by 3% Zn substitution, we found that NMR/NQR spectra and NMR physical quantities in the normal state are hardly changed, indicating that the crystal structure and electronic states are not modified by Zn substitution. Our results suggest that the suppression of superconductivity by Zn substitution is not due to the change of the normal-state properties, but due to strong non-magnetic pair-breaking effect to superconductivity.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, This paper was chosen as "Paper of Editors' Suggestion

    Government subsidized R&D, project screening, and firms’ innovation: evidence from China

    The effects of government subsidies to corporate R&D on firms’ innovation outputs still remain inconclusive in existing studies. Moreover, little is known how the screening system of the public R&D programs influences the effect of such programs. This study examines the effects of Innofund (one of the largest Chinese government programs supporting corporate R&D activities) on firms’ innovation outputs in China. In particular, the project screening mechanism was changed due to policy amendments in 2005. This exogenous policy shock allows us to estimate how the project screening system affects the influence of public R&D subsidies. Based on a panel dataset of Chinese manufacturing firms, we find Innofund-backed firms outperform their non-Innofund-backed counterparts in innovation, measured by the number of patents, new product sales, and the volume of exports after they gained funding. The magnification effects of Innofund are larger after 2005, when the project-screening scheme became more decentralized indicating that decentralized screening functions better in public R&D investment. Finally, the effects of Innofund and the effects of the decentralized screening system that occurred in 2005 vary substantially across markets. The more economically and institutionally developed the market is, the stronger the Innofund effects and the project selection decentralization effects appear.
