Pulse-Shape Discrimination of CaF2(Eu)
We measured the decay time of the scintillation pulses produced by electron
and nuclear recoils in CaF2(Eu) by a new fitting method. In the recoil energy
region 5-30 keVee, we found differences of the decay time between electron and
nuclear recoil events. In the recoil energy region above 20 keVee, we found
that the decay time is independent of the recoil energy.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Cognitive bias modification training in adolescents: persistence of training effects
Negative biases in the interpretation of social information are associated with anxious symptoms in adolescents. Previous studies have attempted to modify interpretive biases to alleviate anxious mood responses but the longevity of such training effects has not been established. A cognitive bias modification of interpretations (CBM-I) paradigm was administered to sixty-nine 15–17 year-olds. Participants were either trained to interpret ambiguous social situations positively, or received control training that contained no emotional content. Participants showed significantly weaker endorsement of negative interpretations of novel ambiguous information following positive training than following control. Positive CBM-I training effects on interpretation did not differ between a group tested immediately following training and one tested 24 h later. Results provided no evidence of differential changes in state anxiety as a direct result of CBM-I training. The persistence of training effects of suppressing negative biases for ambiguous social information is encouraging for future work that might use bias-training methods in adolescents as buffers against negative emotional responses
Mutation of Directed Graphs -- Corresponding Regular Expressions and Complexity of Their Generation
Directed graphs (DG), interpreted as state transition diagrams, are
traditionally used to represent finite-state automata (FSA). In the context of
formal languages, both FSA and regular expressions (RE) are equivalent in that
they accept and generate, respectively, type-3 (regular) languages. Based on
our previous work, this paper analyzes effects of graph manipulations on
corresponding RE. In this present, starting stage we assume that the DG under
consideration contains no cycles. Graph manipulation is performed by deleting
or inserting of nodes or arcs. Combined and/or multiple application of these
basic operators enable a great variety of transformations of DG (and
corresponding RE) that can be seen as mutants of the original DG (and
corresponding RE). DG are popular for modeling complex systems; however they
easily become intractable if the system under consideration is complex and/or
large. In such situations, we propose to switch to corresponding RE in order to
benefit from their compact format for modeling and algebraic operations for
analysis. The results of the study are of great potential interest to mutation
testing
Cognitive bias modification training in adolescents reduces anxiety to a psychological challenge
Many anxiety disorders begin in adolescence. Early interventions that target adolescent anxiety may prevent later disabling consequences. Previous studies show that cognitive bias modification training can generate positive interpretative styles of ambiguous information in adolescents but effects on anxious mood reduction are less clear. Adult studies suggest more consistent training effects on mood when assessed in response to a psychological challenge. Here, we assess whether positive training reduces adolescent anxious responses to a laboratory stressor. A total of 40 adolescents were randomly assigned to positive or negative computerised training. During training, ambiguous scenarios were resolved positively or negatively. After training, adolescents completed a test of interpretation bias and a difficult mental arithmetic task while believing that they were being videotaped for teaching purposes. First, positively-trained adolescents endorsed more positive and fewer negative interpretations of new ambiguous situations than negatively-trained adolescents. Second, positively-trained adolescents also showed attenuated anxiety levels after but not before the challenge. Induced positive interpretations via computerised cognitive training may modify anxious responsivity. Although there some caveats to these data, in general they justify extensions of computerised training to adolescents with clinical anxiety, to reduce anxious responsivity
First results from dark matter search experiment with LiF bolometer at Kamioka Underground Laboratory
Tokyo group has performed first underground dark matter search experiment in
2001 through 2002 at Kamioka Observatory(2700m.w.e). The detector is eight LiF
bolometers with total mass 168g aiming for the direct detection of WIMPs via
spin-dependent interaction. With a total exposure of 4.1 kg days, we derived
the limits in the a_p-a_n (WIMP-nucleon couplings) plane and excluded a large
part of the parameter space allowed by the UKDMC experiment.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
Local and global Fokker-Planck neoclassical calculations showing flow and bootstrap current modification in a pedestal
In transport barriers, particularly H-mode edge pedestals, radial scale
lengths can become comparable to the ion orbit width, causing neoclassical
physics to become radially nonlocal. In this work, the resulting changes to
neoclassical flow and current are examined both analytically and numerically.
Steep density gradients are considered, with scale lengths comparable to the
poloidal ion gyroradius, together with strong radial electric fields sufficient
to electrostatically confine the ions. Attention is restricted to relatively
weak ion temperature gradients (but permitting arbitrary electron temperature
gradients), since in this limit a delta-f (small departures from a Maxwellian
distribution) rather than full-f approach is justified. This assumption is in
fact consistent with measured inter-ELM H-Mode edge pedestal density and ion
temperature profiles in many present experiments, and is expected to be
increasingly valid in future lower collisionality experiments. In the numerical
analysis, the distribution function and Rosenbluth potentials are solved for
simultaneously, allowing use of the exact field term in the linearized
Fokker-Planck collision operator. In the pedestal, the parallel and poloidal
flows are found to deviate strongly from the best available conventional
neoclassical prediction, with large poloidal variation of a different form than
in the local theory. These predicted effects may be observable experimentally.
In the local limit, the Sauter bootstrap current formulae appear accurate at
low collisionality, but they can overestimate the bootstrap current near the
plateau regime. In the pedestal ordering, ion contributions to the bootstrap
and Pfirsch-Schluter currents are also modified
New results from DAMA/LIBRA
DAMA/LIBRA is running at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N..
Here the results obtained with a further exposure of 0.34 ton x yr are
presented. They refer to two further annual cycles collected one before and one
after the first DAMA/LIBRA upgrade occurred on September/October 2008. The
cumulative exposure with those previously released by the former DAMA/NaI and
by DAMA/LIBRA is now 1.17 ton x yr, corresponding to 13 annual cycles. The data
further confirm the model independent evidence of the presence of Dark Matter
(DM) particles in the galactic halo on the basis of the DM annual modulation
signature (8.9 sigma C.L. for the cumulative exposure). In particular, with the
cumulative exposure the modulation amplitude of the single-hit events in the (2
-- 6) keV energy interval measured in NaI(Tl) target is (0.0116 +- 0.0013)
cpd/kg/keV; the measured phase is (146 +- 7) days and the measured period is
(0.999 +- 0.002) yr, values well in agreement with those expected for the DM
