    AbstractIn this article, we are concerned with the propagation of elastic waves in isotropic heterogeneous media, invariant under translation in one direction. We give a theoretical analysis of the existence of guided waves and of their properties. In particular the thresholds, or cut-off frequencies, are studied in detail. The main mathematical tool is the spectral theory of selfadjoint operators, and more specifically the Max-Min principle

    Testing the Resolving Power of 2-D K^+ K^+ Interferometry

    Adopting a procedure previously proposed to quantitatively study two-dimensional pion interferometry, an equivalent 2-D chi^2 analysis was performed to test the resolving power of that method when applied to less favorable conditions, i.e., if no significant contribution from long lived resonances is expected, as in kaon interferometry. For that purpose, use is made of the preliminary E859 K^+ K^+ interferometry data from Si+Au collisions at 14.6 AGeV/c. As expected, less sensitivity is achieved in the present case, although it still is possible to distinguish two distinct decoupling geometries. The present analysis seems to favor scenarios with no resonance formation at the AGS energy range, if the preliminary K^+ K^+ data are confirmed. The possible compatibility of data with zero decoupling proper time interval, conjectured by the 3-D experimental analysis, is also investigated and is ruled out when considering more realistic dynamical models with expanding sources. These results, however, clearly evidence the important influence of the time emission interval on the source effective transverse dimensions. Furthermore, they strongly emphasize that the static Gaussian parameterization, commonly used to fit data, cannot be trusted under more realistic conditions, leading to distorted or even wrong interpretation of the source parameters!Comment: 11 pages, RevTeX, 4 Postscript figures include

    The ZEUS Forward Plug Calorimeter with Lead-Scintillator Plates and WLS Fiber Readout

    A Forward Plug Calorimeter (FPC) for the ZEUS detector at HERA has been built as a shashlik lead-scintillator calorimeter with wave length shifter fiber readout. Before installation it was tested and calibrated using the X5 test beam facility of the SPS accelerator at CERN. Electron, muon and pion beams in the momentum range of 10 to 100 GeV/c were used.     Constraints on new interactions from neutron scattering experiments

    Constraints for the constants of hypothetical Yukawa-type corrections to the Newtonian gravitational potential are obtained from analysis of neutron scattering experiments. Restrictions are obtained for the interaction range between 10^{-12} and 10^{-7} cm, where Casimir force experiments and atomic force microscopy are not sensitive. Experimental limits are obtained also for non-electromagnetic inverse power law neutron-nucleus potential.     Identification of two novel CT antigens and their capacity to elicit antibody response in hepatocellular carcinoma patients

    FATE and TPTE genes were originally reported to be specifically expressed in the adult testis. We searched for the databases of Unigene and serial analysis of gene expression ( SAGE) implying that these two gene transcripts might also be expressed in tumours. Herein, we demonstrated that FATE and TPTE mRNA transcripts were expressed in different histological types of tumours and normal testis. Both are cancer-testis (CT) antigens and renamed as FATE/BJ-HCC-2 and TPTE/BJ-HCC-5, respectively. Comparison at nucleotide sequence, the FATE/BJ-HCC-2 cDNA, was identical to that of FATE, whereas the TPTE/BJ-HCC-5 was found to have two isoforms in both cancers and testis: one was identical in cDNA sequence to TPTE, encoding a protein of 551 amino acids, and the other variant lacked an exon of 54 bp, encoding a protein of 533 amino acids. The mRNA expression was analysed by RT-PCR and real-time PCR. FATE/BJ-HCC-2 mRNA was detected in 66% ( 41 out of 62) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) samples and 21% ( three out of 14) in colon cancer samples, whereas the TPTE/BJ-HCC-5 mRNA was detected in 39% ( 24 out of 62) and 36% ( five out of 14) in HCC and non-small lung cancer samples, respectively. The recombinant proteins were prepared and the reactivity of allogenic sera to these two antigens was screened. The frequency of antibody response against FATE/BJ-HCC-2 and TPTE/BJ-HCC-5 proteins was 7.3% ( three out of 41) and 25.0% ( six out of 24), respectively, in HCC patients bearing respective gene transcripts.     Control of human endometrial stromal cell motility by PDGF-BB, HB-EGF and trophoblast-secreted factors

    Human implantation involves extensive tissue remodeling at the fetal-maternal interface. It is becoming increasingly evident that not only trophoblast, but also decidualizing endometrial stromal cells are inherently motile and invasive, and likely contribute to the highly dynamic processes at the implantation site. The present study was undertaken to further characterize the mechanisms involved in the regulation of endometrial stromal cell motility and to identify trophoblast-derived factors that modulate migration. Among local growth factors known to be present at the time of implantation, heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) triggered chemotaxis (directed locomotion), whereas platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-BB elicited both chemotaxis and chemokinesis (non-directed locomotion) of endometrial stromal cells. Supernatants of the trophoblast cell line AC-1M88 and of first trimester villous explant cultures stimulated chemotaxis but not chemokinesis. Proteome profiling for cytokines and angiogenesis factors revealed neither PDGF-BB nor HB-EGF in conditioned media from trophoblast cells or villous explants, while placental growth factor, vascular endothelial growth factor and PDGF-AA were identified as prominent secretory products. Among these, only PDGF-AA triggered endometrial stromal cell chemotaxis. Neutralization of PDGF-AA in trophoblast conditioned media, however, did not diminish chemoattractant activity, suggesting the presence of additional trophoblast-derived chemotactic factors. Pathway inhibitor studies revealed ERK1/2, PI3 kinase/Akt and p38 signaling as relevant for chemotactic motility, whereas chemokinesis depended primarily on PI3 kinase/Akt activation. Both chemotaxis and chemokinesis were stimulated upon inhibition of Rho-associated, coiled-coil containing protein kinase. The chemotactic response to trophoblast secretions was not blunted by inhibition of isolated signaling cascades, indicating activation of overlapping pathways in trophoblast-endometrial communication. In conclusion, trophoblast signals attract endometrial stromal cells, while PDGF-BB and HB-EGF, although not identified as trophoblast-derived, are local growth factors that may serve to fine-tune directed and non-directed migration at the implantation site

    Two-kaon correlations in central Pb + Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c

    Two-particle interferometry of positive kaons is studied in Pb + Pb collisions at mean transverse momenta 0.25\approx 0.25 and 0.91 GeV/c. A three-dimensional analysis was applied to the lower pTp_T data, while a two-dimensional analysis was used for the higher pTp_T data. We find that the source size parameters are consistent with the mTm_T scaling curve observed in pion correlation measurements in the same collisions, and that the duration time of kaon emission is consistent with zero within the experimental sensitivity.Comment: 4 pages incl. 1 table and 3 fig's; RevTeX; accepted for publication in PR
