    A shear-thickening colloidal electrolyte for aqueous zinc-ion batteries with resistance on impact

    A conventional aqueous electrolyte is a crucial component of zinc-ion batteries providing an ion conductive medium. However, the monofunction of a liquid electrolyte cannot bear any external load. With regard to applications in electric vehicles and stationary energy storage devices, complicated battery packing materials are required to improve the mechanical properties, resulting in reduced energy or power densities from the perspective of the entire device. In this work, an electrolyte suspension combining both fluid-like and solid-like performances was developed for rechargeable zinc-ion batteries. Cornstarch water suspension is utilized in the electrolyte design forming a shear-thickening electrolyte with impact resistance ability. The formed electrolyte becomes rigid at a high shear rate. In other words, under a sudden impact, a battery with this shear-thickening electrolyte could offer additional load bearing avoiding short-circuiting and improving safety. Although an additional functionality, namely impact resistance, was added to the electrolyte, the as-prepared electrolyte still performs with comparable electrochemical performances for which it exhibits a superior ionic conductivity of 3.9 × 10−3 S cm−1 and Zn2+ transference number. This electrolyte even suppresses side-effects on the zinc anode, exhibiting a lower voltage gap in the symmetric cell compared to the aqueous electrolyte. The integrated full cell also delivered a specific capacity of 255 mA h g−1 with commercial MnO2 as the cathode at a current density of 0.1 A g−1

    Downregulation of developmentally regulated endothelial cell locus-1 inhibits the growth of colon cancer

    Developmentally regulated endothelial cell locus-1 (Del1) is an embryonic angiogenic factor expressed in early embryonic endothelial cells, but recently has been found to be expressed in some forms of cancers including colon and breast cancers, and melanoma, and human cancer cell lines. Overexpression of Del1 accelerates tumor growth by enhancing vascular formation, implying Del1 may be a potential target for anti-angiogenic cancer therapy. The study aims to investigate whether downregulation of Del1 could inhibit the growth of tumors established in nude Balb/c mice by subcutaneous implantation of human LS-174T colon cancer cells. The shRNA expression vectors targeting human Del1, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were constructed. Gene transfection of Del1-shRNA downregulated expression of Del1 in LS-174T cells in vivo and in vitro, but did not alter the proliferative or survival properties of cells in vitro. Gene transfection of VEGF-shRNA downregulated expression of both VEGF and Del1 in LS-174T cells in vivo and in vitro. Both Del1-shRNA and VEGF-shRNA gene therapies exhibited anti-tumor activities and they also showed a synergistic effect in suppressing growth of colon tumors by anti-angiogenesis and anti-proliferation. Although further investigation to clarify the mechanisms explaining the role of Del1 in tumor growth, and the interaction between VEGF and Del1, is required, the results indicate that downregulation of Del1 presents a potent therapeutic strategy to combat colon cancer

    A detailed study on the reflection component for the black hole candidate MAXI J1836−194

    We present a detailed spectral analysis of the black hole candidate MAXI J1836−194. The source was caught in the intermediate state during its 2011 outburst by Suzaku and RXTE. We jointly fit the X-ray data from these two missions using the relxill model to study the reflection component, and a steep inner emissivity profile indicating a compact corona as the primary source is required in order to achieve a good fit. In addition, a reflection model with a lamp-post configuration (relxilllp), which is normally invoked to explain the steep emissivity profile, gives a worse fit and is excluded at 99 per cent confidence level compared to relxill. We also explore the effect of the ionization gradient on the emissivity profile by fitting the data with two relativistic reflection components, and it is found that the inner emissivity flattens. These results may indicate that the ionization state of the disc is not constant. All the models above require a supersolar iron abundance higher than ∼4.5. However, we find that the high-density version of reflionx can describe the same spectra even with solar iron abundance well. A moderate rotating black hole (a* = 0.84–0.94) is consistently obtained by our models, which is in agreement with previously reported values

    How is it effective for farmers to adopt environmentally friendly cultivated land protection technology: a configurational perspective

    The adoption of environmentally friendly farmland conservation techniques by farmers is an important way to effectively curb agricultural surface pollution and promote the conservation of farmland quality. Based on 425 farmers’ in-depth interview data, a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis method was used to construct a psychological cognition (farmers’ awareness and willingness to participate)—external context (organizational linkages and government regulation)—behavioral effect model to reveal the conditional configuration and multivariate paths of psychological cognition and external contextual factors influencing farmers’ behavioral effects on the adoption of environmentally friendly farmland conservation technologies. The results show that individual behavioral decision factors do not influence the behavioral effects of farmers. The results show that individual behavioral decision factors are not necessary to drive the effective adoption of environmentally friendly farmland conservation technologies and that multiple decision factors interact to form three sets of configurations that enhance the behavioral effectiveness of farmers, summarized as the willingness-to-participate dominant model, the internal and external constraints dominant model, and the external context dominant model

    Assessment of absorption of four lignan constituents of JingNing particles in rat gut using in situ single-pass intestinal perfusion

    Purpose: To study small intestinal absorption of schisadrol A, schisandrol B, schizandrin A and schisandrin B in JingNing particles using in situ single-pass intestinal perfusion (SPIP).Methods: Absorption rate constant (Ka) and apparent permeability (Papp) of the drugs at different concentrations in various parts of rat small intestine (duodenum, jejunum and ileum) were determined using SPIP. JingNing particles were also perfused in situ at different pH in the entire rat intestine. Ethanol extract of Schisandra chinensis (standard) at low concentration was perfused in the duodenum for comparison with extract of JingNing particles.Results: The order of apparent permeability of the four lignans was schisandrol A < schisandrol B < schizandrin A < schisandrin B. Ka and Papp values of the four lignans in JingNing particles were concentration-dependent. Absorption increased in the rank order: ileum > duodenum > jejunum. Optimum absorption pH was 6.50. Polygala tenuifolia extract and volatile oil of Rhizoma acori tatarinowii significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced the absorption of the four lignans.Conclusion: The four lignans were well absorbed in the intestinal tract, particularly the ileum, probably through carrier-mediated transport.
