    An in-situ method for assessing soil aggregate stability in burned landscapes

    Due to soil repellency in burned areas, slope runoff and soil erodibility escalates following forest fires, increasing the vulnerability to post-fire debris flows. Soil aggregate stability is a critical determinant of soil infiltration capacity and erosion susceptibility. The prevalent method of assessing soil aggregate stability in burned areas, the counting the number of water drop impacts (CND) method, is time-intensive and impractical for in-situ measurements. In response, this study introduces a novel technique based on the shock and vibration damage (SVD) effect for evaluating soil aggregate stability in burned areas. Thirteen distinct soil aggregate types were meticulously prepared for indoor simulated fire testing, with due consideration to factors such as bulk weight, organic matter content, and water repellency, which influence stability of soil aggregates. Employing a custom-built test apparatus, the mass loss rate (MLR) of soil aggregates was determined through orthogonal experiments using the SVD method and compared against the standard CND technique's quantification of water droplet-induced aggregate destruction. The findings demonstrated that SVD method, employing Test Scheme 6 (testing 20 aggregates, 1-meter impact height, 40% water content, and five impacts), exhibits excellent agreement (Kendall coefficient = 0.797) and correlation (R2 = 0.634) with CND method outcomes. This testing scheme, characterized by rapid determination and effective discrimination, is identified as the optimal testing approach. The SVD testing apparatus is straightforward, portable, and easily disassembled, rendering it suitable for on-site use. It can be used to distinguish the stability level of soil aggregates swiftly and quantitatively under various fire intensities in burned areas in situ, which is an important guiding significance for the study of soil erosion, erosion control, and post-fire debris flow initiation mechanism in burned areas

    The workload change and depression among emergency medical staff after the open policy during COVID-19: a cross-sectional survey in Shandong, China

    IntroductionIn the middle of December 2022, the Chinese government adjusted the lockdown policy on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a large number of infected patients flooded into the emergency department. The emergency medical staff encountered significant working and mental stress while fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to investigate the workload change, and the prevalence and associated factors for depression symptoms among emergency medical staff after the policy adjustment.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional online survey of emergency medical staff who fought against COVID-19 in Shandong Province during January 16 to 31, 2023. The respondents’ sociodemographic and work information were collected, and they were asked to complete the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) then. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were applied to identify the potential associated factors for major depression.ResultsNine hundred and sixteen emergency medical personnel from 108 hospitals responded to this survey. The respondents’ weekly working hours (53.65 ± 17.36 vs 49.68 ± 14.84) and monthly night shifts (7.25 ± 3.85 vs 6.80 ± 3.77) increased after the open policy. About 54.3% of the respondents scored more than 10 points on the PHQ-9 standardized test, which is associated with depressive symptoms. In univariate analysis, being doctors, living with family members aged ≤16 or ≥ 65 years old, COVID-19 infection and increased weekly working hours after the open policy were significantly associated with a PHQ-9 score ≥ 10 points. In the multivariate analysis, only increased weekly working hours showed significant association with scoring ≥10 points.ConclusionEmergency medical staff’ workload had increased after the open policy announcement, which was strongly associated with a higher PHQ-9 scores, indicating a very high risk for major depression. Emergency medical staff working as doctors or with an intermediate title from grade-A tertiary hospitals had higher PHQ-9 scores, while COVID-19 infection and weekly working hours of 60 or more after the open policy were associated with higher PHQ-9 scores for those from grade-B tertiary hospitals. Hospital administrators should reinforce the importance of targeted emergency medical staff support during future outbreaks

    Bio-Preparation and Regulation of Pyrrole Structure Nano-Pigment Based on Biomimetic Membrane

    Microbial pigments, regarded as the most potential biomass pigments, have lately attracted increasing attention in textile dyeing due to their sustainability and cleaner production. The pyrrole structure microbial pigment, called prodigiosin, recently have become a research hotspot for its bright colors and antibacterial function. However, in most case the extraction and preparation are time-consuming and expensive processes since these kinds of microbial pigments are intracellular metabolites. In order to promote the application of microbial pigments in textile dyeing, a novel idea of preparing dye liquid of pyrrole structure pigments based on fermentation broth was put forward via increasing the proportion of extracellular pigments. A model membrane platform was established with a planar lipid bilayer to investigate transmembrane transport of microbial pigments and permeability barrier of cell membrane. The nano-dispersion of pigments was produced as the dye liquor owing to high-throughput transmembrane transfer of intracellular pigments and the increase of extracellular pigments proportion. The results indicated that the size and surface electrical properties of the pigments had contributed much to the mass transfer. It is also showed that transmembrane transmission of the intracellular pigments could be regulated by physical and chemical methods. With the improvement of transmembrane transfer efficiency of microbial pigments and the proportion of extracellular pigments, the complicated biological separation process could be avoided and the application of microbial pigments in textile dyeing can be promoted

    Numerical investigation on CO2 absorbed in aqueous N-methyldiethanolamine plus piperazine

    A multiphase and multicomponent mass transfer model of CO2 absorbed in aqueous N-methyldiethanolamine and piperazine (PZ) was built in the study. In the model, a simple method of mass transfer between phases was proposed. Besides, the hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, and complex reversible chemical reaction were considered simultaneously. The model was validated by comparing with the previous experimental data which showed that simulated results can represent the experimental data with reasonable accuracy. Based on the model, the effects of gas velocity, liquid load and CO2 loading on the absorption rate, and enhancement factor were analyzed. Model results showed that the enhancement factor increased with a rising gas velocity while decreased with a rising liquid load or CO2 loading. The change of enhancement factor with CO2 loading was similar to that of equilibrium concentration of PZ which indicated that PZ was significant to the absorption process.     Circular replication-associated protein-encoding single-stranded DNA virus with risk of spillover is widely prevalent in domestic animals in China

    Circular replication-associated protein (Rep)-encoding single-stranded (CRESS) DNA viruses are highly diverse and have a broad range of hosts. In this study, we report the detection of Bo-Circo-like virus AH20-1 in the feces of diarrheal cattle. The virus has a circular genome of 3,912 nucleotides, three major putative open reading frames, and encodes a Rep gene of 310 amino acids. We found that the virus is closely related to the Bo-Circo-like virus CH strain, which belongs to the novel Kirkoviridae family. Furthermore, we conducted a nationwide surveillance program and found that the virus is prevalent in China (23.6%, 205/868), with the BCLa subtype being the predominant strain. Our findings suggest that the virus can infect sheep, highlighting the potential for cross-species transmission. Our pressure analysis indicates that the CRESS-DNA Kirkoviridae family has broad host adaptation, and that selection pressure played an important role in the evolution of its Rep genes. Our study underscores the need for continued epidemiological surveillance of this virus due to its widespread prevalence in our ruminant population and potential for cross-species transmission

    Modeling the vapor liquid phase equilibrium of mixed refrigerants is the essential precondition for the calculation of refrigeration system. In this work, the study on 48 pure substances and 58 binary systems consisting of C<sub><i>x</i></sub>H<sub><i>y</i></sub> and C<sub><i>x</i></sub>H<sub><i>y</i></sub>F<sub><i>z</i></sub> was performed. Both Peng–Robinson (PR) and perturbed-chain SAFT (PCSAFT) were investigated. The relationship between the parameters in PR and PCSAFT was exhibited. Strong linear function of the volume parameter <i>m</i>σ<sup>3</sup> in PCSAFT with covolume parameter <i>b</i> in PR were found, as well as the energy parameter <i>m</i>ε<sup>2</sup> in PCSAFT with energy parameter <i>a</i>/<i>b</i> in PR. This correlated characteristic provides an idea for regressing pure substance parameters and a criterion whether the regressed parameters are reasonable or not. The interaction parameters in PR-VDW and PCSAFT show consistent tendency, and both are limited to a very narrow range. The simple predictive method was proposed by using the average value 0.146 for PR-VDW and 0.093 for PCSAFT. The internal correlated behaviors result that the PCSAFT equation is no better than PR equation on the VLE description of C<sub><i>x</i></sub>H<sub><i>y</i></sub> + C<sub><i>x</i></sub>H<sub><i>y</i></sub>F<sub><i>z</i></sub> systems
