Public bicycle as a feeder mode to rail transit in China: The role of gender, age, income, trip purpose, and bicycle theft experience

    No full text
A marriage between public bicycle and rail transit presents new opportunities for sustainable transportation in Chinese cities. To examine determinants of public bicycle usage for rail transit access, an intercept survey of feeder mode choice among rail transit users was conducted near rail stations in Nanjing, China. Mode choice models were estimated with five feeder mode alternatives, including car, bus, walk, private bike, and public bike. By differentiating between public and private bicycle modes in the mode choice models, the study reveals the effects of personal demographics, trip characteristics, and station environments on public bicycle usage for rail transit access. Results show that female, older, and low-income rail commuters are less likely to use public bicycle to access rail transit. Rail commuters with bicycle theft experience and making school- or work-related trips are more likely to use public bicycle to access rail transit. Land use variables are largely insignificant in this study except that density shows a positive relationship with walking to rail transit. The results on demographic differences raise equity concerns when it comes to investing in public bicycle systems. Policy implications are discussed for Chinese cities to equitably boost public bicycle integration with rail transit

Experimental Study on Pot Damage and Contact Stress Distribution Characteristics of Oil Sunflower Plug Seedlings

To reveal the collision damage mechanisms of plug seedlings and improve the quality of seedlings, the kinetics equations of the plug seedlings were established based on the generalized Hertz-theory. The influence laws of different factors on pot damage were obtained through a drop impact test. The Tekscan pressure distribution measurement system measured the collision impact force, and the orthogonal tests were conducted. The test showed that the influence of the collision impact force was on the order of plug specification > drop height > contact material. The Tekscan pressure distribution measurement system measured the change law of contact stress distribution under significant influencing factors. The test results showed that the collision contact area between the plug seedlings and contact materials from large to small was soil, steel, and ABS plastic. The collision contact area between the plug seedlings and other plug specifications was 50 plug, 72 plug, and 105 plug from the largest to the smallest. When the plug seedlings collided with contact materials, the average contact stress between the seedlings and the steel plate ranged from 19.4 kPa to 22.8 kPa. When the plug seedlings of various sizes collided with steel plates, the average contact stress was ordered as 105 plug, 72 plug and 50 plug in descending order. A linear regression model between collision impact force and matrix loss rate under different factors was established based on the pressure data collected by the Tekscan pressure distribution measurement system. This study provides a basis for exploring the impact damage mechanisms of plug seedlings and improving the seedling quality

Experimental Research and Analysis of Soil Disturbance Behavior during the Hole Drilling Process of a Hanging-Cup Transplanter by DEM

This study provides a basis for designing and optimizing the key components of hanging-cup transplanters. The discrete element method, a high-speed photography test, and indoor soil bin tests were used to explore soil disturbance behavior during the hole drilling process. A comparative analysis of the discrete element method and the high-speed photography test indicated that soil particles are mainly affected by the coupled effects of the shear force and the squeezing force of the planter. The soil disturbance range in the horizontal and longitudinal sections gradually increases with the movement of the planter. The change in the soil particle velocity of the horizontal and longitudinal sections in different zones shows a trend of first increasing, then decreasing, and finally stabilizing. The velocity of soil particles in the longitudinal section varies significantly in the direction of burial. The soil in the horizontal section mainly moves to both sides when the duckbill is opened. The closer the soil particles are to the outer wall of the duckbill, the greater the change in velocity is. The soil bin tests and simulations were carried out under different conditions, but the change trend of the simulation results is consistent with the soil bin test results, proving that the simulation model is reliable. With the forward speed of the transplanter, planting depth, and soil compactness as the test factors, and the hole depth and hole longitudinal length as the response values, an orthogonal test of three factors and three levels was designed. A regression model between each element and response value was established. The optimal parameter combination was obtained when the forward speed was 1.25 km/h, the planting depth was 80 mm, and the soil firmness was 140~150 (N/cm2); these results were experimentally verified

Natural Polysaccharide β-Glucan Protects against Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity by Suppressing Oxidative Stress

Doxorubicin (DOXO) can be used to treat a variety of human tumors, but its clinical application is limited due to severe cardiotoxic side effect. Here, we explore the role of β-glucan in DOXO-induced cardiotoxicity in mice and study its underlying mechanism. When co-administered with DOXO, β-glucan was observed to prevent left ventricular dilation and fibrosis. In fact, DOXO reduces the activity of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex and enhances oxidative stress, which in turn impairs heart function. DOXO decreases the ATP production capacity of the heart and increases the ROS content, while β-glucan can restore the heart capacity and reduce oxidative stress. β-glucan also increases the activity of antioxidant enzymes GSH-PX and SOD, and reduces the level of MDA in the serum. In addition, the mRNAs of cardiac dysfunction marker genes ANP, BNP and Myh7 were significantly increased after DOXO induction, however, they did not increase when combined with β-glucan administration. In conclusion, our results indicate that β-glucan can improve the antioxidant capacity of the heart, thereby serving as a potential therapeutic strategy to prevent DOXO-induced cardiotoxicity

Abstract. Background:. In light of the significant clinical benefits of antibody-drug conjugates in clinical trials, the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-low category in breast cancers has gained increasing attention. Therefore, we studied the clinicopathological characteristics of Chinese patients with hormone receptor (HR)-positive/HER2-low early-stage breast cancer and developed a recurrence risk prediction model. Methods:. Female patients with HR-positive/HER2-low early-stage breast cancer treated in 29 hospitals of the Chinese Society of Breast Surgery (CSBrS) from Jan 2015 to Dec 2016 were enrolled. Their clinicopathological data and prognostic information were collected, and machine learning methods were used to analyze the prognostic factors. Results:. In total, 25,096 patients were diagnosed with breast cancer in 29 hospitals of CSBrS from Jan 2015 to Dec 2016, and clinicopathological data for 6486 patients with HER2-low early-stage breast cancer were collected. Among them, 5629 patients (86.79%) were HR-positive. The median follow-up time was 57 months (4, 76 months); the 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate was 92.7%, and the 5-year overall survival (OS) rate was 97.7%. In total, 412 cases (7.31%) of metastasis were observed, and 124 (2.20%) patients died. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that T stage, N stage, lymphovascular thrombosis, Ki-67 index, and prognostic stage were associated with recurrence and metastasis (P <0.05). A recurrence risk prediction model was established using the random forest method and exhibited a sensitivity of 81.1%, specificity of 71.7%, positive predictive value of 74.1%, and negative predictive value of 79.2%. Conclusion:. Most of patients with HER2-low early-stage breast cancer were HR-positive, and patients had favorable outcome; tumor N stage, lymphovascular thrombosis, Ki-67 index, and tumor prognostic stage were prognostic factors. The HR-positive/HER2-low early-stage breast cancer recurrence prediction model established based on the random forest method has a good reference value for predicting 5-year recurrence events.
