    Novel Class Discovery for Long-tailed Recognition

    While the novel class discovery has recently made great progress, existing methods typically focus on improving algorithms on class-balanced benchmarks. However, in real-world recognition tasks, the class distributions of their corresponding datasets are often imbalanced, which leads to serious performance degeneration of those methods. In this paper, we consider a more realistic setting for novel class discovery where the distributions of novel and known classes are long-tailed. One main challenge of this new problem is to discover imbalanced novel classes with the help of long-tailed known classes. To tackle this problem, we propose an adaptive self-labeling strategy based on an equiangular prototype representation of classes. Our method infers high-quality pseudo-labels for the novel classes by solving a relaxed optimal transport problem and effectively mitigates the class biases in learning the known and novel classes. We perform extensive experiments on CIFAR100, ImageNet100, Herbarium19 and large-scale iNaturalist18 datasets, and the results demonstrate the superiority of our method.     Joint Optimization of Active and Passive Beamforming in Multi-IRS Aided mmWave Communications

    Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been considered as a promising technology to alleviate the blockage effect and enhance coverage in millimeter wave (mmWave) communication. To explore the impact of IRS on the performance of mmWave communication, we investigate a multi-IRS assisted mmWave communication network and formulate a sum rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the active and passive beamforming and the set of IRSs for assistance. The optimization problem is intractable due to the lack of convexity of the objective function and the binary nature of the IRS selection variables. To tackle the complex non-convex problem, an alternating iterative approach is proposed. In particular, utilizing the fractional programming method to optimize the active and passive beamforming and the optimization of IRS selection is solved by enumerating.     Considerable MHC Diversity Suggests That the Functional Extinction of Baiji Is Not Related to Population Genetic Collapse

    To further extend our understanding of the mechanism causing the current nearly extinct status of the baiji (Lipotes vexillifer), one of the most critically endangered species in the world, genetic diversity at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II DRB locus was investigated in the baiji. Nine highly divergent DRB alleles were identified in 17 samples, with an average of 28.4 (13.2%) nucleotide difference and 16.7 (23.5%) amino acid difference between alleles. The unexpectedly high levels of DRB allelic diversity in the baiji may partly be attributable to its evolutionary adaptations to the freshwater environment which is regarded to have a higher parasite diversity compared to the marine environment. In addition, balancing selection was found to be the main mechanisms in generating sequence diversity at baiji DRB gene. Considerable sequence variation at the adaptive MHC genes despite of significant loss of neutral genetic variation in baiji genome might suggest that intense selection has overpowered random genetic drift as the main evolutionary forces, which further suggested that the critically endangered or nearly extinct status of the baiji is not an outcome of genetic collapse

    Molecular phylogeny of the antiangiogenic and neurotrophic serpin, pigment epithelium derived factor in vertebrates

    BACKGROUND: Pigment epithelium derived factor (PEDF), a member of the serpin family, regulates cell proliferation, promotes survival of neurons, and blocks growth of new blood vessels in mammals. Defining the molecular phylogeny of PEDF by bioinformatic analysis is one approach to understanding the link between its gene structure and its function in these biological processes. RESULTS: From a comprehensive search of available DNA databases we identified a single PEDF gene in all vertebrate species examined. These included four mammalian and six non-mammalian vertebrate species in which PEDF had not previously been described. A five gene cluster around PEDF was found in an approximate 100 kb region in mammals, birds, and amphibians. In ray-finned fish these genes are scattered over three chromosomes although only one PEDF gene was consistently found. The PEDF gene is absent in invertebrates including Drosophila melanogaster (D. melanogaster), Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), and sea squirt (C. intestinalis). The PEDF gene is transcribed in all vertebrate phyla, suggesting it is biologically active throughout vertebrate evolution. The multiple actions of PEDF are likely conserved in evolution since it has the same gene structure across phyla, although the size of the gene ranges from 48.3 kb in X. tropicalis to 2.9 kb in fugu, with human PEDF at a size of 15.6 kb. A strong similarity in the proximal 200 bp of the PEDF promoter in mammals suggests the existence of a possible regulatory region across phyla. Using a non-synonymous/synonymous substitution rate ratio we show that mammalian and fish PEDFs have similar ratios of <0.13, reflecting a strong purifying selection of PEDF gene. A large number of repetitive transposable elements of the SINE and LINE class were found with random distribution in both the promoter and introns of mammalian PEDF. CONCLUSION: The PEDF gene first appears in vertebrates and our studies suggest that the regulation and biological actions of this gene are preserved across vertebrates. This comprehensive analysis of the PEDF gene across phyla provides new information that will aid further characterization of common functional motifs of this serpin in biological processes

    A study on the factors influencing the turnover of knowledge employees in state-owned enterprises: taking CZ company as a case

    Under the background of knowledge economy, the competition among enterprises is gradually condensed into that for human resources. However, the turnover rate of employee in stated-owned enterprises is actually getting higher and higher, particularly, the knowledge staff. CZ Company is chosen as a case to examine the factors influencing knowledge employee turnover in stated-owned enterprises. After data analysis, it is found that promotional opportunity, job stress, distributive justice, autonomy have a significant positive impact on employee turnover. Some suggestions are proposed to decrease the employee turnover in stated-owned enterprises in this paper

    Pemphigus Associated with Psoriasis Vulgaris: A Retrospective Study of Seven Patients and a Review of the Literature

    The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics and the treatment for patients with psoriasis who presented with subsequent pemphigus after their treatment. A retrospective study of seven patients with psoriasis associated with pemphigus was performed, including the clinical assessment and treatments. The patients with a median age of 74 (range from 54 to 85) were significantly older than those in previously reported cases, where the median age was 58 (range from 15 to 77) (P&lt;0.05). Six out of seven patients were male, which represents a higher ratio than that reported in literature (10/20). The duration between the diagnosis of psoriasis and onset of pemphigus ranged from 4 to 30 years, and previous studies reported a much wider range that, from a few months to 52 years. Patients developed pemphigus after the treatments for psoriasis with ultraviolet light, steroids, or immunosuppressant. Our study represents a distinct subset of patients with psoriasis accompanied with pemphigus who share typical clinical characteristics. Among these patients, most are elderly men and the dominant subtype is pemphigus foliaceus. Our data suggests that no treatment for psoriasis specifically correlated with the development of pemphigus. The combination treatment of steroids with immunosuppressant lead to an improvement of the disease. </p
