    Identification of biomarker volatile organic compounds released by three stored-grain insect pests in wheat

    Monitoring and early detection of stored-grain insect infestation is essential to implement timely and effective pest management decisions to protect stored grains. We report a reliable analytical procedure based on headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) to assess stored-grain infestation through the detection of volatile compounds emitted by insects. Four different fibre coatings were assessed; 85 µm CAR/PDMS had optimal efficiency in the extraction of analytes from wheat. The headspace profiles of volatile compounds produced by Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius), and Sitophilus granarius (Linnaeus), either alone or with wheat, were compared with those of non-infested wheat grains. Qualitative analysis of chromatograms showed the presence of different volatile compound profiles in wheat with pest infestation compared with the wheat controls. Wheat-specific and insect-specific volatile compounds were identified, including the aggregation pheromones, dominicalure-1 and dominicalure-2, from R. dominica, and benzoquinones homologs from T. castaneum. For the first time, the presence of 3-hydroxy-2-butanone was reported from S. granarius, which might function as an alarm pheromone.     Transferrin-Liposome-Mediated Systemic p53 Gene Therapy in Combination with Radiation Results in Regression of Human Head and Neck Cancer Xenografts

    This is the published version, also available here: http://dx.doi.org/10.1089/10430349950016357.The use of cationic liposomes as nonviral vehicles for the delivery of therapeutic molecules is becoming increasingly prevalent in the field of gene therapy. We have previously demonstrated that the use of the transferrin ligand (Tf) to target a cationic liposome delivery system resulted in a significant increase in the transfection efficiency of the complex [Xu, L., Pirollo, K.F., and Chang, E.H. (1997). Hum. Gene Ther. 8, 467-475]. Delivery of wild-type (wt) p53 to a radiation-resistant squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) cell line via this ligand-targeted, liposome complex was also able to revert the radiation resistant phenotype of these cells in vitro. Here we optimized the Tf/liposome/DNA ratio of the complex (LipT) for maximum tumor cell targeting, even in the presence of serum. The efficient reestablishment of wtp53 function in these SCCHN tumor cells in vitro, via the LipT complex, restored the apoptotic pathway, resulting in a significant increase in radiation-induced apoptosis that was directly proportional to the level of exogenous wtp53 in the tumor cells. More significantly, intravenous administration of LipT-p53 markedly sensitized established SCCHN nude mouse xenograft tumors to radiotherapy. The combination of systemic LipT-p53 gene therapy and radiation resulted in complete tumor regression and inhibition of their recurrence even 6 months after the end of all treatment. These results indicate that this tumor-specific, ligand-liposome delivery system for p53 gene therapy, when used in concert with conventional radiotherapy, can provide a new and more effective means of cancer treatment

    Enabling Flexibility through Forming and Evolving Systems of Systems

    Flexibility is a highly desired attribute of many systems operating in changing or uncertain conditions. This paper presents a study of enabling flexibility through designing and operating systems of systems (SoSs). The paper analyzes flexibility mechanisms of SoSs and, accordingly, identifies needs for flexibility that SoSs can meet. Following that, it proposes a hierarchical network as a more flexible SoS architecture for complex or distributed large-scale systems. Then, decision problems for forming and evolving a SoS network are defined. A case that involves integrating distributed renewable energy sources with the main grid is presented to illustrate the implementation of the proposed methodology. Results from this study support the idea of acquiring and maintaining flexibility with SoSs. The paper also identifies research needs for advancing this particular use of SoSs

    Review of the advances in solar-assisted air source heat pumps for the domestic sector

    Solar assisted air source heat pump shows great potential as a promising energy-saving heating technology, which integrates solar collector and air source heat pump. It is widely considered for supplying hot water, space heating and/or space cooling in the domestic sector. The performance of solar assisted air source heat pumps can be evaluated in system level by parameters such as coefficient of performance, seasonal performance factor, energy consumption, solar fraction as well as initial and operating costs, and in component level by parameters such as efficiencies of solar collection and thermal energy storage. Their performances are affected by many factors such as system configuration, components size, working fluid, working conditions and weather conditions. This paper presents a comprehensive review on the recent advances in solar assisted air source heat pump for the domestic sector in terms of system configuration, solar collectors, thermal energy storage, defrosting method and the perspective areas of further investigations. The results of this review confirm that research is still required to improve the performance of such a combined system and reduce initial cost compared with existing heating systems based on hydrocarbon combustion. The information presented in this paper is beneficial to the researchers, small and medium-sized enterprises supplying renewable energy system technologies, heating engineers and service workers, energy policy and decision makers, environmental activists and communities

    Static detection of control-flow-related vulnerabilities using graph embedding

    © 2019 IEEE. Static vulnerability detection has shown its effectiveness in detecting well-defined low-level memory errors. However, high-level control-flow related (CFR) vulnerabilities, such as insufficient control flow management (CWE-691), business logic errors (CWE-840), and program behavioral problems (CWE-438), which are often caused by a wide variety of bad programming practices, posing a great challenge for existing general static analysis solutions. This paper presents a new deep-learning-based graph embedding approach to accurate detection of CFR vulnerabilities. Our approach makes a new attempt by applying a recent graph convolutional network to embed code fragments in a compact and low-dimensional representation that preserves high-level control-flow information of a vulnerable program. We have conducted our experiments using 8,368 real-world vulnerable programs by comparing our approach with several traditional static vulnerability detectors and state-of-the-art machine-learning-based approaches. The experimental results show the effectiveness of our approach in terms of both accuracy and recall. Our research has shed light on the promising direction of combining program analysis with deep learning techniques to address the general static analysis challenges

    Biochemical, haematological and histopathological studies of extract of Ageratum conyzoides L. in Sprague Dawley rats

    This study was conducted to evaluate the safety potential of the leaf extract of Ageratum conyzoides Linnaeus in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats using biochemical, haematological and histological indices of toxicity. Four groups of seven male SD rats per group were used for the study. To group A was administered 0.25% CMC-Na/ kg body weight and was used as the control group, while groups B, C and D were respectively administered with 500, 1000 and 1500 mg/kg body weight of the ethanolic leaf extract of A. conyzoides by gastric intubation for 14 days. Animals were subsequently anaesthetized, blood samples were collected for biochemical and haematological assays; organs were isolated and weighed, while the liver, kidney and spleen were processed for histopathological studies. Aspartate amino transferase, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase and alkaline phosphatase were significantly (p < 0.05) reduced in the groups treated with 1000 and 1500 mg/kg body weight of the extract. Furthermore, there was a significant (p < 0.05) elevation in white blood cell count, mean platelet volume and % platelet distribution width. Histopathological studies indicated various degrees of hepatocellular necrosis in all the treated groups accompanied by significant increases in the weight of liver and spleen. The results showed that the ethanolic leaf extract of A. conyzoides significantly alters the biomarkers of cardiac and skeletal muscle disorders, and higher doses could induce liver cell injury
