The increasing atmospheric [CO2] poses great challenges to wheat production. Currently, the response of starch characteristics in different specialized wheat cultivars to elevated [CO2], as well as the underlying physiological and molecular mechanisms remains unclear. Therefore, an experiment was conducted with open-top chambers to study the effects of ambient [CO2] [a(CO2)] and elevated [CO2] [e(CO2)] on photosynthetic performance, yield and starch characteristics of bread wheat (Zhengmai 369, ZM369) and biscuit wheat (Yangmai 15, YM15) from 2020 to 2022. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in photosynthetic performance, yield, amylose and amylopectin content, volume ratio of large granules under e[CO2]. Moreover, e[CO2] upregulated the gene expression and enzyme activities of GBSS (Granule-bound starch synthase) and SSS (Soluble starch synthase), increased starch pasting viscosity, gelatinization enthalpy and crystallinity. Compared to YM15, ZM369 exhibited a higher upregulation of GBSSI, greater increase in amylose content and volume ratio of large granules, as well as higher gelatinization enthalpy and crystallinity. However, ZM369 showed a lower increase in amylopectin content and a lower upregulation of SSSI and SSSII. Correlation analysis revealed amylose and amylopectin content had a positive correlation with GBSS and SSS, respectively, a significant positively correlation among the amylose and amylopectin content, starch granule volume, and pasting properties. In conclusion, these changes may enhance the utilization value of biscuit wheat but exhibit an opposite effect on bread wheat. The results provide a basis for selecting suitable wheat cultivars and ensuring food security under future climate change conditions

The baiji, or Yangtze River dolphin (Lipotes vexillifer), is a flagship species for the conservation of aquatic animals and ecosystems in the Yangtze River of China; however, this species has now been recognized as functionally extinct. Here we report a high-quality draft genome and three re-sequenced genomes of L. vexillifer using Illumina short-read sequencing technology. Comparative genomic analyses reveal that cetaceans have a slow molecular clock and molecular adaptations to their aquatic lifestyle. We also find a significantly lower number of heterozygous single nucleotide polymorphisms in the baiji compared to all other mammalian genomes reported thus far. A reconstruction of the demographic history of the baiji indicates that a bottleneck occurred near the end of the last deglaciation, a time coinciding with a rapid decrease in temperature and the rise of eustatic sea level

BackgroundBullous pemphigoid (BP) is a rare autoimmune skin condition that causes large fluid-filled blisters on the skin, especially in older adults. BP has been linked to various diseases and medications, but its association with cognitive outcomes is unclear.MethodsWe conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies investigating the association between BP and cognitive outcomes, such as all-cause dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and vascular dementia in middle-aged and older adults. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases for relevant studies published up to March 2023. We included studies that reported odds ratios (ORs) or hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between BP and cognitive outcomes. We pooled the ORs, or HRs using random-effects models and performed subgroup and sensitivity analyses to explore potential sources of heterogeneity.ResultsThe study selection process identified 13 studies for inclusion in the analysis, 11 studied arms of which used a case-control design and 7 studied arms of which used a cohort design. The studies were conducted primarily in Europe, with a few from Asia and the United States. The meta-analysis found that BP was associated with higher odds of all-cause dementia in middle-aged and older participants in both cohort studies(HR = 1.41,95% CI: 1.20-1.66, P = 0.000) and case-control (OR = 4.25, 95% CI, 2.73-6.61; P = 0.000). The study found no significant publication bias in the included studies. The meta-regression analyses identified some subgroups associated with significantly reported odds ratios in case-control association analysis, including Europe, BP diagnosed based on clinical, histology, immunofluorescence, and both adjustment status of NO and YES.ConclusionsOur meta-analysis suggests that BP is associated with an increased risk of all-cause dementia in middle-aged and older adults. Further studies are needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and causal relationship between BP and cognitive outcomes

Response of Woodpecker's Head during Pecking Process Simulated by Material Point Method.

Prevention of brain injury in woodpeckers under high deceleration during the pecking process has been an intriguing biomechanical problem for a long time. Several studies have provided different explanations, but the function of the hyoid bone, one of the more interesting skeletal features of a woodpecker, still has not been fully explored. This paper studies the relationship between a woodpecker head's response to impact and the hyoid bone. Based on micro-CT scanning images, the material point method (MPM) is employed to simulate woodpecker's pecking process. The maximum shear stress in the brainstem (SSS) is adopted as an indicator of brain injury. The motion and deformation of the first cervical vertebra is found to be the main reason of the shear stress of the brain. Our study found that the existence of the hyoid bone reduces the SSS level, enhances the rigidity of the head, and suppresses the oscillation of the endoskeleton after impact. The mechanism is explained by a brief mechanical analysis while the influence of the material properties of the muscle is also discussed

International audienceTo investigate a model to simulate wheat dry matter accumulation, three wheat cultivars with different tillering abilities were grown at three densities each in a field experiment. Five simulation models with high correlation coefficients for relative dry matter accumulation were established by the method of normalized. Among these models, the Richards equation was the best in fitting and forecasting, i.e., y = 1.1435/(1 + e0.2776 − 4.6558x)1/0.1130, r = 0.9927. Correlation coefficient of grey comprehensive relationship degree between actual dry matter accumulation in occurrence time of maximum rate of dry matter accumulation and dry matter weight was highest, so a higher actual dry matter weight in occurrence time of maximum rate of dry matter accumulation played an important role in stabilizing and improving dry matter weight of wheat

International audienceIt will impact the overall yield and quality of wheat if the malnutrition in the wheat growing season is not timely found. Thus, it is necessary to carry out timely nutrition detection of the wheat population in the field. Based on the techniques of Java web development and image processing, this paper constructs the estimation model of the field wheat population condition, designs and implements the automatic nutrition detection and analysis system based on field wheat population images. By using the received images of crop growth group, the system detects the nutrition condition of wheat population cultivated in the field quickly, and gives assisted fertilization decision to farmers for reducing the effect of wheat malnutrition on the yield and quality of wheat

In order to solve the shortcomings of the current clinical scale assessment for stroke patients, such as excessive time consumption, strong subjectivity, and coarse grading, this study designed an intelligent rehabilitation assessment system based on wearable devices and a machine learning algorithm and explored the effectiveness of the system in assessing patients’ rehabilitation outcomes. The accuracy and effectiveness of the intelligent rehabilitation assessment system were verified by comparing the consistency and time between the designed intelligent rehabilitation assessment system scores and the clinical Fugl–Meyer assessment (FMA) scores. A total of 120 stroke patients from two hospitals participated as volunteers in the trial study, and statistical analyses of the two assessment methods were performed. The results showed that the R2 of the total score regression analysis for both methods was 0.9667, 95% CI 0.92–0.98, p < 0.001, and the mean of the deviation was 0.30, 95% CI 0.57–1.17. The percentages of deviations/relative deviations falling within the mean ± 1.96 SD of deviations/relative deviations were 92.50% and 95.83%, respectively. The mean time for system assessment was 35.00% less than that for clinician assessment, p < 0.05. Therefore, wearable intelligent machine learning rehabilitation assessment has a strong and significant correlation with clinician assessment, and the time spent is significantly reduced, which provides an accurate, objective, and effective solution for clinical rehabilitation assessment and remote rehabilitation without the presence of physicians

Background Recent studies have found that circular RNAs (circRNAs) play important roles in tumorigenesis. This study aimed to determine the function and potential mechanisms of hsa_circ_0001615 in esophageal cancer. Methods Quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to validate the expression of hsa_circ_0001615 and miR-142-5p. Subsequently, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium salt, flow cytometry, clone formation, and transwell assays were used to assess the function of hsa_circ_0001615. Furthermore, qRT-PCR and Western blot analysis were used to verify cyclin D1, Bcl-2 associated X, B-cell lymphoma/leukemia gene-2, and β-catenin levels. Circular RNA Interactome was used to estimate the binding site between hsa_circ_0001615 and miR-142-5p. Additionally, dual-luciferase reporter assays were used to determine whether miR-142-5p was a direct target of hsa_circ_0001615. Pearson correlation analysis was used to explore the relationship between miR-142-5p and hsa_circ_0001615. Results In esophageal cancer, the expressions of hsa_circ_0001615 and miR-142-5p were increased and decreased, respectively. Hsa_circ_0001615 inhibition significantly reduced the proliferation, migration, and invasion but increased the apoptosis of esophageal cancer cells. Additionally, hsa_circ_0001615 knockdown increased miR-142-5p expression but decreased β-catenin expression. MiR-142-5p was a direct target of hsa_circ_0001615. Conclusion Hsa_circ_0001615 knockdown could mediate antitumor effects through the miR-142-5p/β-catenin pathway
