    Determination of volatile marker compounds of common coffee roast defects

    Coffee beans from the same origin were roasted using six time-temperature profiles, in order to identify volatile aroma compounds associated with five common roast coffee defects (light, scorched, dark, baked and underdeveloped). Thirty-seven volatile aroma compounds were selected on the basis that they had previously been identified as potent odorants of coffee and were also identified in all coffee brew preparations; the relative abundance of these aroma compounds was then evaluated using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with headspace solid phase micro extraction. Some of the 37 key aroma compounds were significantly changed in each coffee roast defect and changes in one marker compound was chosen for each defect type, that is, indole for light defect, 4-ethyl-2-methoxyphenol for scorched defect, phenol for dark defect, maltol for baked defect and 2,5-dimethylfuran for underdeveloped defect. The association of specific changes in aroma profiles for different roast defects has not been shown previously and could be incorporated into screening tools to enable the coffee industry quickly identify if roast defects occur during production

    Design, Optimization, and Experiment on a Bioinspired Jumping Robot with a Six-Bar Leg Mechanism Based on Jumping Stability

    A jumping leg with one degree of freedom (DOF) is characterized by high rigidity and simple control. However, robots are prone to motion failure because they might tip over during the jumping process due to reduced mechanism flexibility. Mechanism design, configuration optimization, and experimentation were conducted in this study to achieve jumping stability for a bioinspired robot. With locusts as the imitated object, a one-DOF jumping leg mechanism was designed taking Stephenson-type six-bar mechanism as reference, and kinematic and dynamic models were established. The rotation angle of the trunk and the total inertia moment were used as stability criteria, and the sensitivity of different links to the target was analyzed in detail. With high-sensitivity link lengths as the optimization parameters, a configuration optimization method based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm was proposed in consideration of the different constraint conditions of the jumping leg mechanism. Optimization results show that this method can considerably improve optimization efficiency. A prototype of the robot was developed, and the experiment showed that the optimized trunk rotation angle and total inertia moment were within a small range and can thus meet the requirements of jumping stability.     Efficient Synthesis of Methyl Methacrylate by One Step Oxidative Esterification over Zn-Al-Mixed Oxides Supported Gold Nanocatalysts

    Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is an important monomer in fine chemicals. The synthesis of MMA by one-step oxidative esterification from methacrolein with methanol over a heterogeneous catalyst with high activity, selectivity and stability is highly desirable. Herein, Zn-Al-hydrotalcites (HTs)-supported atomically precise Au25 nanoclusters with different molar ratios of Zn2+/Al3+ were prepared and used as the precursors for this reaction. They exhibited good performances in comparison with the gold catalysts prepared by the deposition precipitation method. The structural and electronic properties were evaluated by various characterization technologies, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) of CO adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). The combined characterization results suggested that the adsorption property of gold and the basicity of the catalyst contributes to their high activities. Substrates extended experiments and stability tests implied the potential application of Zn-Al-mixed oxides supported gold catalysts, which paves a new way for supported gold catalyst in the one-step oxidation esterification reaction
