    A Comparative Study of Power Line Communication Networks With and Without Buffer

    Power line communication (PLC) has recently been receiving widespread attention due to its applications in the smart grid. We present a comparative study on the call-level performance of PLC networks with and without buffer through queueing theory. The PLC network model consists of a base station (BS) and a number of subscriber stations that are interconnected with each other and with the BS via power lines. The power line transmission channels are subject to failure during service due to disturbance. A two-dimensional Markov process is used for the modeling. Performance comparison is presented through theoretic analysis and numerical results

    Participation of Different Forces and Coeducation in Peking University: From Reports of Newspaper Media, 1918-1920

    It was an important achievement that Peking University abolished female forbiddance and implemented coeducation in Women’s Liberation Movement during the May 4th New Culture Movement. In this period, newspaper media kept up with the historical trend. As the leader of public opinion, Newspaper media intervened, reported and publicized the abolishment of female forbiddance and the implementation of coeducation in Peking University. It promoted the involvement of different social forces: the Principal of Peking University — Cai Yuanpei, female intellectuals, teachers and students of Peking university. These various forces played different roles in this trend. In their interaction, the abolishment of female forbiddance and the implementation of coeducation in Peking University began with appeals and debates and eventually ended with the realization. Furthermore, it aroused a nationwide impact in the education field. It not only reflects that coeducation in universities is a historical trend of democratization and modernization in higher education, but also indicates that newspaper media plays an indispensable role in Women’s Liberation Movement

    Distinguishing RBL-like objects and XBL-like objects with the peak emission frequency of the overall energy spectrum

    We investigate quantitatively how the peak emission frequency of the overall energy spectrum is at work in distinguishing RBL-like and XBL-like objects. We employ the sample of Giommi et al. (1995) to study the distribution of BL Lacertae objects with various locations of the cutoff of the overall energy spectrum. We find that the sources with the cutoff located at lower frequency are indeed sited in the RBL region of the αroαox\alpha_{ro}-\alpha_{ox} plane, while those with the cutoff located at higher frequency are distributed in the XBL region. For a more quantitative study, we employ the BL Lacertae samples presented by Sambruna et al. (1996), where, the peak emission frequency, νp\nu _p, of each source is estimated by fitting the data with a parabolic function. In the plot of αrxlogνp\alpha_{rx}-\log \nu_p we find that, in the four different regions divided by the αrx=0.75\alpha_{rx}=0.75 line and the logνp=14.7\log \nu_p=14.7 line, all the RBL-like objects are inside the upper left region, while most XBL-like objects are within the lower right region. A few sources are located in the lower left region. No sources are in the upper right region. This result is rather quantitative. It provides an evidence supporting what Giommi et al. (1995) suggested: RBL-like and XBL-like objects can be distinguished by the difference of the peak emission frequency of the overall energy spectrum.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

    On the Sample Complexity of Multichannel Frequency Estimation via Convex Optimization

    The use of multichannel data in line spectral estimation (or frequency estimation) is common for improving the estimation accuracy in array processing, structural health monitoring, wireless communications, and more. Recently proposed atomic norm methods have attracted considerable attention due to their provable superiority in accuracy, flexibility and robustness compared with conventional approaches. In this paper, we analyze atomic norm minimization for multichannel frequency estimation from noiseless compressive data, showing that the sample size per channel that ensures exact estimation decreases with the increase of the number of channels under mild conditions. In particular, given LL channels, order K(logK)(1+1LlogN)K\left(\log K\right) \left(1+\frac{1}{L}\log N\right) samples per channel, selected randomly from NN equispaced samples, suffice to ensure with high probability exact estimation of KK frequencies that are normalized and mutually separated by at least 4N\frac{4}{N}.     Analyzing the prices of the most expensive sheet iron all over the world: Modeling, prediction and regime change

    The private car license plates issued in Shanghai are bestowed the title of "the most expensive sheet iron all over the world", more expensive than gold. A citizen has to bid in an monthly auction to obtain a license plate for his new private car. We perform statistical analysis to investigate the influence of the minimal price PminP_{\min} of the bidding winners, the quota NquotaN_{\rm{quota}} of private car license plates, the number NbidderN_{\rm{bidder}} of bidders, as well as two external shocks including the legality debate of the auction in 2004 and the auction regime reform in January 2008 on the average price PmeanP_{\rm{mean}} of all bidding winners. It is found that the legality debate of the auction had marginal transient impact on the average price in a short time period. In contrast, the change of the auction rules has significant permanent influence on the average price, which reduces the price by about 3020 yuan Renminbi. It means that the average price exhibits nonlinear behaviors with a regime change. The evolution of the average price is independent of the number NbidderN_{\rm{bidder}} of bidders in both regimes. In the early regime before January 2008, the average price PmeanP_{\rm{mean}} was influenced only by the minimal price PminP_{\min} in the preceding month with a positive correlation. In the current regime since January 2008, the average price is positively correlated with the minimal price and the quota in the preceding month and negatively correlated with the quota in the same month. We test the predictive power of the two models using 2-year and 3-year moving windows and find that the latter outperforms the former. It seems that the auction market becomes more efficient after the auction reform since the prediction error increases.Comment: 10 pages including 5 figures and 4 table

    Experimental and analytical study on heat generation characteristics of a lithium-ion power battery

Experimental apparatus is newly built and the investigations on the charge/discharge characteristics and temperature rise behavior are carried out at ambient temperatures of 28 °C, 35 °C and 42 °C over the period of 1 C, 2 C, 3 C and 4 C rates. The thermal conductivity of a single battery cell is experimentally measured to be 5.22 W/(m K). A new transient model of heat generation rate based on the battery air cooling system is proposed. Comparison of the battery temperature between simulated results and experimental data is performed and good agreement is achieved. The impacts of the ambient temperature and charge/discharge rate on the heat generation rate are further analyzed. It is found that both ambient temperature and charge/discharge rate have significant influences on the voltage change and temperature rise as well as the heat generation rate. During charge/discharge process, the higher the current rate, the higher the heat generation rate. The effect of the ambient temperature on the heat generation demonstrates a remarkable difference at different charge states.Peer reviewe
