    HUNTED BY THE CROWD: A QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF COLLABORATIVE INFORMATION SEARCHING IN CHINA

    This study explores a particular form of cyber surveillance in China known as "human flesh search," in which unrelated Internet users collaboratively conduct surveillance on fellow citizens. Its theoretical framework draws up the notion of panoptic model, first articulated in the early 1800s by Jeremy Bentham and then developed by the French social theorist and philosopher Michel Foucault. Unlike some previous studies on human flesh searching, which focus on highly publicized search incidents, this study examines cyber surveillance in its daily practice, and probes how and why collaborative searches occur in China. It also explores structural constraints and empowerment experienced by search participants through the lens of power, in order to understand such a controversial activity. The study involved content analysis of a Chinese leading search forum--MOP Human Flesh Search Forum; an online survey with 158 search participants; and in-depth interviews with 9 search participants. The study found that Chinese human flesh search often took the forms of coveillance (peer-to-peer surveillance) and sousveillance (bottom-up surveillance). Fun-seeking was the primary motive for participants, who are mainly male youths; being helpful is the next. Privacy invasions and power abuses have complicated or even undermined search practices, limiting the potential of this activity to contribute to civil governance. In terms of empowerment, participating in the human flesh search seemed to give individual searchers a sense of empowerment, but such effects vary greatly depending on individuals' knowledge, social resources and search experiences. Privacy invasions and power abuses were consistently evident in searching practices, limiting the potential of this crowd-based searching, even when this is said to promote justice, to contribute to civil governance. The study also found that the panoptic model is still highly relevant and useful in understanding collaborative online surveillance, especially the function and effects of "gaze." Once conducted in a collective manner, the gaze of fellow citizens can be greatly extended in its reach and intensified by massive participation. The human flesh search mechanism studied here has great potential to profoundly change China's media landscape, but such potential is limited by current media censorship and the lack of accountability of search participants. Although the study examines searching phenomenon only in Chinese cyber space, the findings may shed light on similar surveillance practices which have emerged elsewhere in recent years. The whole question of citizen participation might benefit from the explication of the role of participation in this form of surveillance

    Giant supercurrent states in a superconductor-InAs/GaSb-superconductor junction

    Superconductivity in topological materials has attracted a great deal of interest in both electron physics and material sciences since the theoretical predictions that Majorana fermions can be realized in topological superconductors [1-4]. Topological superconductivity could be realized in a type II, band-inverted, InAs/GaSb quantum well if it is in proximity to a conventional superconductor. Here we report observations of the proximity effect induced giant supercurrent states in an InAs/GaSb bilayer system that is sandwiched between two superconducting tantalum electrodes to form a superconductor-InAs/GaSb-superconductor junction. Electron transport results show that the supercurrent states can be preserved in a surprisingly large temperature-magnetic field (T-H) parameter space. In addition, the evolution of differential resistance in T and H reveals an interesting superconducting gap structure

    Applications for Drowning Identification by Planktonic Diatom Test on Rats in Forensic Medicine

    AbstractWe established a model of drowning, and by investigating diatoms in lung, liver, kidney, and long bone marrow of rats at different time to discuss the cause of death. The organs of 35 rats were extracted 0.5h, 1h, 6h, 12h, 24h and 48h after drowning and the organs of sham-drowning group killed by mechanical asphyxia were extracted 1h after body immersed in water. The organs were digested by acid, and the diatoms were analyzed by statistics. Results shown the detection rate was 100% in lung, and the positive rate of all the extracted organs was 100% 6hours after drowning except the sham-drowning group. No diatoms were detected in the liver, kidney and bone marrow of the sham-drowning group, just only one case was positive in the lung. So it is concluded that the detection rate of diatoms could be considered as important evidence in drowning determination

    Indium Phosphide Bismide

    Indium phosphide bismide is a new member to the dilute bismide family. Since the first synthesis by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) in 2013, it has cut a figure for its abnormal properties comparing with other dilute bismides. Bismuth (Bi) incorporation is always a difficulty for epitaxial growth of dilute. In this chapter, it shows how to regulate MBE growth parameters and their influence on Bi incorporation in InP1−xBix. Structural, electronic and optical properties are systematically reviewed. Thermal annealing to study Bi thermal stability and its effect on physical properties is performed. InP1−xBix shows strong and broad photoluminescence at room temperature, which is a potential candidate for fabricating super-luminescence diodes applied for enhancing spatial resolution in optical coherence tomography. Quaternary phosphide bismide, including InGaPBi and InAlPBi, is briefly introduced in this chapter

    FOXO transcription factors protect against the diet-induced fatty liver disease

    Forkhead O transcription factors (FOXOs) have been implicated in glucose and lipid homeostasis; however, the role of FOXOs in the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is not well understood. In this study, we designed experiments to examine the effects of two different diets-very high fat diet (HFD) and moderately high fat plus cholesterol diet (HFC)-on wildtype (WT) and liver-specific Foxo1/3/4 triple knockout mice (LTKO). Both diets induced severe hepatic steatosis in the LTKO mice as compared to WT controls. However, the HFC diet led to more severe liver injury and fibrosis compared to the HFD diet. At the molecular levels, hepatic Foxo1/3/4 deficiency triggered a significant increase in the expression of inflammatory and fibrotic genes including Emr1, Ccl2, Col1a1, Tgfb, Pdgfrb, and Timp1. Thus, our data suggest that FOXO transcription factors play a salutary role in the protection against the diet-induced fatty liver disease

    Non-abelian fractional quantum hall effect for fault-resistant topological quantum computation.

    Topological quantum computation (TQC) has emerged as one of the most promising approaches to quantum computation. Under this approach, the topological properties of a non-Abelian quantum system, which are insensitive to local perturbations, are utilized to process and transport quantum information. The encoded information can be protected and rendered immune from nearly all environmental decoherence processes without additional error-correction. It is believed that the low energy excitations of the so-called=5/2 fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state may obey non-Abelian statistics. Our goal is to explore this novel FQH state and to understand and create a scientific foundation of this quantum matter state for the emerging TQC technology. We present in this report the results from a coherent study that focused on obtaining a knowledge base of the physics that underpins TQC. We first present the results of bulk transport properties, including the nature of disorder on the 5/2 state and spin transitions in the second Landau level. We then describe the development and application of edge tunneling techniques to quantify and understand the quasiparticle physics of the 5/2 state
