    Anchoring Bias and Price Strategy

    Get PDF
Anchoring Bias is used in psychology to represent the widespread human tendency to rely on the first piece of information or a familiar reference a person has heard, no matter how reliable this information is when a decision or choice is made. The first or specific value information is always tremendous effort the results people made. A product is truly never expensive or cheap; it depends on comparison. Most of the time having an anchor price will help a person make a decision or choice. This report will explain the bias built into the strategy of product pricing. This study describes the results of a survey conducted on how people will buy a car if a dealership provides different prices at different times. The survey data will show how people make decision or choice when they have prior price information. The questionnaires were distributed to a total of twenty-six students in the Spring 2018 FIN534 Behavioral Economics and Algorithmic Finance course with Professor Philip Z. Maymin at the University of Bridgeport, Ernest C. Trefz School of Business

Internationalization of Chinese firms : a contingent resource perspective

This study examines the role of inward activities in the internationalization of firms from China and proposes a theoretical framework of internationalization using the contingent resource theory. Based on case studies of four Chinese enterprises and a survey of Chinese manufacturing firms, the study shows that by engaging in inward activities, firms may acquire the critical resources that can lead to outward activities and the internationalization process. Whether firms can succeed in internationalization is conditional upon several contingency factors including management motivation, absorptive capacity, resource fungibility, exploration strategy, exploitation strategy and government support. Lastly, we explore the implications of the inward activities-based approach to internationalization, internationalization strategies for firms from developing economies, and the directions for future research

Reliable scaling of position weight matrices for binding strength comparisons between transcription factors

    Get PDF
Background: Scoring DNA sequences against PositionWeight Matrices (PWMs) is a widely adopted method to identify putative transcription factor binding sites. While common bioinformatics tools produce scores that can reflect the binding strength between a specific transcription factor and the DNA, these scores are not directly comparable between different transcription factors. Other methods, including p-value associated approaches (Touzet H, Varré J-S. Efficient and accurate p-value computation for position weight matrices. Algorithms Mol Biol. 2007;2(1510.1186):1748–7188), provide more rigorous ways to identify potential binding sites, but their results are difficult to interpret in terms of binding energy, which is essential for the modeling of transcription factor binding dynamics and enhancer activities. Results: Here, we provide two different ways to find the scaling parameter λ that allows us to infer binding energy from a PWM score. The first approach uses a PWM and background genomic sequence as input to estimate λ for a specific transcription factor, which we applied to show that λ distributions for different transcription factor families correspond with their DNA binding properties. Our second method can reliably convert λ between different PWMs of the same transcription factor, which allows us to directly compare PWMs that were generated by different approaches. Conclusion: These two approaches provide computationally efficient ways to scale PWM scores and estimate the strength of transcription factor binding sites in quantitative studies of binding dynamics. Their results are consistent with each other and previous reports in most of cases.Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) ScholarshipMarshall ScholarshipDGICT, Madrid TIN2013-41990-RRoyal Society of Londo

Investigation on Satisfaction among Elderly Residents of Senior Homes in China from a Social Marketing Perspective

    Get PDF
Background: An aging society is a challenge for China with over 200 million adults aged over 60.  In respond to the growing aging population, senior homes become inevitable care model for frail older adults in China.  However, current senior homes seldom consider elderly special needs in their design, construction and operation stages which induce the low level of satisfaction.  Hence, this paper introduces social marketing concept into the senior homes for improving elderly satisfaction.  By adopting social marketing, operators of senior homes provide product (including built environment, healthcare services, social activities and so on) and set price in order to achieve positive behavior of the elders (i.e., satisfaction). Methods: To achieve this, questionnaire survey was conducted with 248 elderly respondents living in senior homes over than 6 months.  Several statistical methods including descriptive analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression modeling were used to analyze quantitative data. Results: The results identified nine social marketing variables including charge rate, built environment, daily caring services, catering services, medical treatment, cleanliness, recreation activities, library and seminar.  Current findings indicated that (1) most senior homes in China pay attention to improve living environment and healthcare services, but might ignore the importance of charge rate and social activities; (2) all social marketing variables were significantly positively related to elderly satisfaction on senior homes; and (3) charge rate, built environment, daily caring services, catering services, medical services and cleanliness exert positive impact on overall satisfaction of elderly residents.  Conclusion: Social marketing as a growing applied approach in healthcare industry is innovatively introduced to senior homes in China.  By adopting social marketing, Chinese senior homes should investigate elders’ special needs and requirements and provide appropriate living environment and caring services. Purpose: To investigate the efficacy of the combined use of normodyne and magnesium sulfate in the treatment of pregnancy-induced hypertension, and its effect on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and factor receptor-1 (Flt-1) levels in serum. Methods: A total of 100 patients with pregnancy-induced hypertension attending Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Xinjiang, China, were categorized as Group A, and then further subdivided into control sub-group (who were treated with magnesium sulfate only) and study sub-group (treated with magnesium sulfate plus normodyne). Furthermore, 100 healthy pregnantwomen attending the hospital for prenatal examination during the same period were categorized as Group B. Serum expressions of VEGF and Flt-1 in all patients were determined and compared. The therapeutic effect, adverse reactions, adverse pregnancy outcomes, blood pressure before and after treatment, 24 h proteinuria, and serum expression levels of VEGF and Flt-1 in the study and control groups were determined and compared. Results: Serum VEGF levels in patients with pregnancy-mediated hypertension were significantly lower than those of healthy pregnant women, and Flt-1 was raised in healthy pregnant women (p < 0.05). In the study group, treatment was markedly more effective, and the degree of amelioration of blood pressure, 24 h proteinuria, serum VEGF, and Flt-1 were significantly higher than for control sub-group. There were lower adverse pregnancy outcomes in study sub-group than in control (p < 0.05).Conclusion: The combination of magnesium sulfate and normodyne produces greater clinical efficacy in the treatment of patients with pregnancy-induced hypertension than magnesium sulfate alone, and also shows a high safety profile

Data collection of mobile sensor networks by drones

    Get PDF
Data collection by autonomous mobile sensor arrays can be coupled with the use of drones which provide a low-cost, easily deployable backhauling solution. These means of collection can be used to organize temporary events (sporting or cultural) or to carry out operations in difficult or hostile terrain. The aim of this thesis is to propose effective solutions for communication between both mobile sensors on the ground and on the edge-to-ground link. For this purpose, we are interested in scheduling communications, routing and access control on the sensor / drone link, the mobile collector. We propose an architecture that meets the constraints of the network. The main ones are the intermittence of the links and therefore the lack of connectivity for which solutions adapted to the networks tolerant to the deadlines are adopted. Given the limited opportunities for communication with the drone and the significant variation in the physical data rate, we proposed scheduling solutions that take account of both the contact time and the physical flow rate. Opportunistic routing is also based on these two criteria both for the selection of relay nodes and for the management of queues. We wanted to limit the overhead and propose efficient and fair solutions between mobile sensors on the ground. The proposed solutions have proved superior to conventional scheduling and routing solutions. Finally, we proposed a method of access combining a random access with contention as well as an access with reservation taking into account the aforementioned criteria. This flexible solution allows a network of dense mobile sensors to get closer to the performance obtained in an oracle mode. The proposed solutions can be implemented and applied in different application contexts for which the ground nodes are mobile or easily adapted to the case where the nodes are static
