    Ultra-broadband Microwave Metamaterial Absorber

    A microwave ultra-broadband polarization-independent metamaterial absorber is demonstrated. It is composed of a periodic array of metal-dielectric multilayered quadrangular frustum pyramids. These pyramids possess resonant absorption modes at multi-frequencies, of which the overlapping leads to the total absorption of the incident wave over an ultra-wide spectral band. The experimental absorption at normal incidence is above 90% in the frequency range of 7.8-14.7GHz, and the absorption is kept large when the incident angle is smaller than 60 degrees.     Two-Period Inventory Control with Manufacturing and Remanufacturing under Return Compensation Policy

    As an effective way of decreasing production cost, remanufacturing has attracted more and more attention from firms. However, it also brings many difficulties to firms, especial when firms remanufacture products which they produce. A primary problem for the case is how to acquire the used product sold by the firm itself. In this paper, we consider a return compensation policy for acquiring used product from customers. Under this policy, the return quantity of used product is a proportion of demand. We study an inventory replenishment and production planning problem for a two-period inventory system with dependent return and demand. We formulate the problem into a three-stage stochastic programming problem, where the firm needs to make decisions on the replenishment quantity of new raw material inventory in each period and the production quantities of manufacturing and remanufacturing ways. We give the optimal production policy of manufacturing and remanufacturing ways for the realized demand and prove the objective function for each stage to be concave in the inventory replenishment quantity. Moreover, we prove that the basic inventory policy is still optimal for each period and give the analytical conditions of the optimal inventory levels which are unrelated to acquisition price.     Research on wear prediction of piston/cylinder pair in axial piston pumps

    The piston/cylinder pair is the critical lubricating interface of axial piston pumps. It suffers from excessive wear, especially under high output pressure. The performance degradation of the piston/cylinder pair is significant to be clarified. In this paper, a wear prediction method of the piston/cylinder pair is established by coupling the load-bearing and lubrication parameters calculation model and the wear calculation model. The models are validated through experiments. The experimental and simulated results show that the wear of two ends of the cylinder bore is severe in the specific ranges of circumferential angle. The time-varying wear process of the piston/cylinder pair can be obtained by using this method; therefore, the maintenance time can be predicted

    Characterization the regulation of herpesvirus miRNAs from the view of human protein interaction network

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>miRNAs are a class of non-coding RNA molecules that play crucial roles in the regulation of virus-host interactions. The ever-increasing data of known viral miRNAs and human protein interaction network (PIN) has made it possible to study the targeting characteristics of viral miRNAs in the context of these networks.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We performed topological analysis to explore the targeting propensities of herpesvirus miRNAs from the view of human PIN and found that (1) herpesvirus miRNAs significantly target more hubs, moreover, compared with non-hubs (non-bottlenecks), hubs (bottlenecks) are targeted by much more virus miRNAs and virus types. (2) There are significant differences in the degree and betweenness centrality between common and specific targets, specifically we observed a significant positive correlation between virus types targeting these nodes and the proportion of hubs, and (3) K-core and ER analysis determined that common targets are closer to the global PIN center. Compared with random conditions, the giant connected component (GCC) and the density of the sub-network formed by common targets have significantly higher values, indicating the module characteristic of these targets.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Herpesvirus miRNAs preferentially target hubs and bottlenecks. There are significant differences between common and specific targets. Moreover, common targets are more intensely connected and occupy the central part of the network. These results will help unravel the complex mechanism of herpesvirus-host interactions and may provide insight into the development of novel anti-herpesvirus drugs.</p

    Kibble-Zurek mechanism of Ising domains

    The formation of topological defects after a symmetry-breaking phase transition is an overarching phenomenon that encodes rich information about the underlying dynamics. Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM), which describes these nonequilibrium dynamics, predicts defect densities of these second-order phase transitions driven by thermal fluctuations. It has been verified as a successful model in a wide variety of physical systems, finding applications from structure formation in the early universe to condensed matter systems. However, whether topologically-trivial Ising domains, one of the most common and fundamental types of domains in condensed matter systems, also obey the KZM has never been investigated in the laboratory. We examined two different kinds of three-dimensional (3D) structural Ising domains: clockwise (CW)/counter-clockwise (CCW) ferro-rotation domains in NiTiO3 and up/down polar domains in BiTeI. While the KZM slope of ferro-rotation domains in NiTiO3 agrees well with the prediction of the 3D Ising model, the KZM slope of polar domains in BiTeI surprisingly far exceeds the theoretical limit, setting an exotic example where possible weak long-range dipolar interactions play a critical role in steepening the KZM slope of non-topological quantities. Our results demonstrate the validity of KZM for Ising domains and reveal an enhancement of the power-law exponent and a possible reduction of the dynamic critical exponent z for transitions with long-range interactions

    Tai Chi for Essential Hypertension

    Objectives. To assess the current clinical evidence of Tai Chi for essential hypertension (EH). Search Strategy. 7 electronic databases were searched until 20 April, 2013. Inclusion Criteria. We included randomized trials testing Tai Chi versus routine care or antihypertensive drugs. Trials testing Tai Chi combined with antihypertensive drugs versus antihypertensive drugs were also included. Data Extraction and Analyses. Study selection, data extraction, quality assessment, and data analyses were conducted according to the Cochrane standards. Results. 18 trials were included. Methodological quality of the trials was low. 14 trials compared Tai Chi with routine care. 1 trial compared Tai Chi with antihypertensive drugs. Meta-analysis all showed significant effect of TaiChi in lowering blood pressure (BP). 3 trials compared Tai Chi plus antihypertensive drugs with antihypertensive drugs. Positive results in BP were found in the other 2 combination groups. Most of the trials did not report adverse events, and the safety of Tai Chi is still uncertain. Conclusions. There is some encouraging evidence of Tai Chi for EH. However, due to poor methodological quality of included studies, the evidence remains weak. Rigorously designed trials are needed to confirm the evidence

    Advances of hafnium based nanomaterials for cancer theranostics

    Hafnium-based nanomaterials (Hf-NMs) have attracted the interest of numerous biomedical researchers by their unique properties. Recent years have witnessed significant advancements in the field of Hafnium-based nanomaterials, particularly in the context of cancer diagnosis and treatment. However, research in this area, especially concerning the clinical application of Hafnium-based nanomaterials, has not been thoroughly reviewed. This review will cover: 1) Classification and synthesis of Hafnium-based nanomaterials including Hafnium oxide nanomaterials, Hafnium Metal-Organic Frameworks/nanoscale coordination polymers (MOFs/NCPs); 2) Hafnium-based nanomaterials act as contrast enhancement agent for cancer imaging, and hafnium-based nanomaterials used for diagnosis in cancer liquid biopsy; 3) hafnium-based nanomaterials for cancer therapy, including hafnium-based nanomaterials for radiotherapy, hafnium-based nanomaterials for photodynamic therapy, hafnium-based nanomaterials for various combined therapy; and 4) Translation, toxicity, and safety for Hf-NMs in human and preclinical animal models. More attention will be given to the clinical translation of Hf-NMs in cancer

    The unfinished agenda of communicable diseases among children and adolescents before the COVID-19 pandemic, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

    BACKGROUND: Communicable disease control has long been a focus of global health policy. There have been substantial reductions in the burden and mortality of communicable diseases among children younger than 5 years, but we know less about this burden in older children and adolescents, and it is unclear whether current programmes and policies remain aligned with targets for intervention. This knowledge is especially important for policy and programmes in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to use the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019 to systematically characterise the burden of communicable diseases across childhood and adolescence. METHODS: In this systematic analysis of the GBD study from 1990 to 2019, all communicable diseases and their manifestations as modelled within GBD 2019 were included, categorised as 16 subgroups of common diseases or presentations. Data were reported for absolute count, prevalence, and incidence across measures of cause-specific mortality (deaths and years of life lost), disability (years lived with disability [YLDs]), and disease burden (disability-adjusted life-years [DALYs]) for children and adolescents aged 0-24 years. Data were reported across the Socio-demographic Index (SDI) and across time (1990-2019), and for 204 countries and territories. For HIV, we reported the mortality-to-incidence ratio (MIR) as a measure of health system performance. FINDINGS: In 2019, there were 3·0 million deaths and 30·0 million years of healthy life lost to disability (as measured by YLDs), corresponding to 288·4 million DALYs from communicable diseases among children and adolescents globally (57·3% of total communicable disease burden across all ages). Over time, there has been a shift in communicable disease burden from young children to older children and adolescents (largely driven by the considerable reductions in children younger than 5 years and slower progress elsewhere), although children younger than 5 years still accounted for most of the communicable disease burden in 2019. Disease burden and mortality were predominantly in low-SDI settings, with high and high-middle SDI settings also having an appreciable burden of communicable disease morbidity (4·0 million YLDs in 2019 alone). Three cause groups (enteric infections, lower-respiratory-tract infections, and malaria) accounted for 59·8% of the global communicable disease burden in children and adolescents, with tuberculosis and HIV both emerging as important causes during adolescence. HIV was the only cause for which disease burden increased over time, particularly in children and adolescents older than 5 years, and especially in females. Excess MIRs for HIV were observed for males aged 15-19 years in low-SDI settings. INTERPRETATION: Our analysis supports continued policy focus on enteric infections and lower-respiratory-tract infections, with orientation to children younger than 5 years in settings of low socioeconomic development. However, efforts should also be targeted to other conditions, particularly HIV, given its increased burden in older children and adolescents. Older children and adolescents also experience a large burden of communicable disease, further highlighting the need for efforts to extend beyond the first 5 years of life. Our analysis also identified substantial morbidity caused by communicable diseases affecting child and adolescent health across the world.
