A data analysis method for isochronous mass spectrometry using two time-of-flight detectors at CSRe
The concept of isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) applying two
time-of-flight (TOF) detectors originated many years ago at GSI. However, the
corresponding method for data analysis has never been discussed in detail.
Recently, two TOF detectors have been installed at CSRe and the new working
mode of the ring is under test. In this paper, a data analysis method for this
mode is introduced and tested with a series of simulations. The results show
that the new IMS method can significantly improve mass resolving power via the
additional velocity information of stored ions. This improvement is especially
important for nuclides with Lorentz factor -value far away from the
transition point of the storage ring CSRe.Comment: published in Chinese Physics C Vol. 39, No. 10 (2015) 10620

A Google Earth-based surveillance system for schistosomiasis japonica implemented in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China

Abstract

Background

Due to the success of the national schistosomiasis control programme in China, transmission has been sufficiently reduced in many areas to severely limit identification of areas at risk by conventional snail surveys only. In this study, we imported Google Earth technology and a Global Positioning System (GPS) into the monitoring system for schistosomiasis surveillance of the banks of the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province, China.

Methods

A total of 45 sites were selected and the risk was assessed monthly by water exposure of sentinel mice at these sites from May to September in 2009 and 2010. The results were assembled and broadcast via the Google Earth platform.

Results

The intensity of schistosomiasis transmission showed peaks of risk in June and September of 2009, while there was only one small peak in June in 2010 as the number of detected positive transmission sites dropped dramatically that year thanks to improved mollusciciding. River ports were found to be areas of particular risk, but ferry terminals and other centres of river-related activities were also problematic.

Conclusions

The results confirm that the surveillance system can be rapidly updated and easily maintained, which proves the Google Earth approach to be a user-friendly, inexpensive warning system for schistosomiasis risk.</p
Signal pathways underlying homocysteine-induced production of MCP-1 and IL-8 in cultured human whole blood
Aim : To elucidate the mechanisms underlying homocysteine (Hcy)-induced chemokine production. Methods : Human whole blood was pretreated with inhibitors of calmodulin (CaM), protein kinase C (PKC), protein tyrosine kinase (PTK), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and NF-ĪB and activators of PPARĪ for 60 min followed by incubation with Hcy 100 Īmol/L for 32 h. The levels of mitogen chemokine protein (MCP)-1 and interleukin-8 (IL-8) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA). Results : Inhibitors of PKC (calphostin C, 50-500 nmol/L and RO-31-8220, 10ā100 nmol/L), CaM (W7, 28ā280 Īmol/L), ERK1/2 MAPK (PD 98059, 2ā20 Īmol/L), p38 MAPK (SB 203580, 0.6ā6 Īmol/L), JNK MAPK (curcumin, 2ā10 Īmol/L), and NF-ĪB (PDTC, 10-100 nmol/L) markedly reduced Hcy 100 Īmol/L-induced production of MCP-1 and IL-8 in human cultured whole blood, but the inhibitors of PTK (genistein, 2.6ā26 Īmol/L and tyrphostin, 0.5-5 Īmol/L) had no obvious effect on MCP-1 and IL-8 production. PPARĪ activators (ciglitazone 30 Īmol/L and troglitazone 10 Īmol/L) depressed the Hcy-induced MCP-1 production but not IL-8 production in the cultured whole blood. Conclusion : Hcy-induced MCP-1 and IL-8 production is mediated by activated signaling pathways such as PKC, CaM, MAPK, and NF-ĪB. Our results not only provide clues for the signal transduction pathways mediating Hcy-induced chemokine production, but also offer a plausible explanation for a pathogenic role of hyperhomocysteinemia in these diseases.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/75644/1/j.1745-7254.2005.00005.x.pd
Low-mass dark matter search results from full exposure of PandaX-I experiment
We report the results of a weakly-interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark
matter search using the full 80.1\;live-day exposure of the first stage of the
PandaX experiment (PandaX-I) located in the China Jin-Ping Underground
Laboratory. The PandaX-I detector has been optimized for detecting low-mass
WIMPs, achieving a photon detection efficiency of 9.6\%. With a fiducial liquid
xenon target mass of 54.0\,kg, no significant excess event were found above the
expected background. A profile likelihood analysis confirms our earlier finding
that the PandaX-I data disfavor all positive low-mass WIMP signals reported in
the literature under standard assumptions. A stringent bound on the low mass
WIMP is set at WIMP mass below 10\,GeV/c, demonstrating that liquid xenon
detectors can be competitive for low-mass WIMP searches.Comment: v3 as accepted by PRD. Minor update in the text in response to
