    Convolutional Hierarchical Attention Network for Query-Focused Video Summarization

    Previous approaches for video summarization mainly concentrate on finding the most diverse and representative visual contents as video summary without considering the user's preference. This paper addresses the task of query-focused video summarization, which takes user's query and a long video as inputs and aims to generate a query-focused video summary. In this paper, we consider the task as a problem of computing similarity between video shots and query. To this end, we propose a method, named Convolutional Hierarchical Attention Network (CHAN), which consists of two parts: feature encoding network and query-relevance computing module. In the encoding network, we employ a convolutional network with local self-attention mechanism and query-aware global attention mechanism to learns visual information of each shot. The encoded features will be sent to query-relevance computing module to generate queryfocused video summary. Extensive experiments on the benchmark dataset demonstrate the competitive performance and show the effectiveness of our approach.Comment: Accepted by AAAI 2020 Conferenc

    Label-Free Liver Tumor Segmentation

    We demonstrate that AI models can accurately segment liver tumors without the need for manual annotation by using synthetic tumors in CT scans. Our synthetic tumors have two intriguing advantages: (I) realistic in shape and texture, which even medical professionals can confuse with real tumors; (II) effective for training AI models, which can perform liver tumor segmentation similarly to the model trained on real tumors -- this result is exciting because no existing work, using synthetic tumors only, has thus far reached a similar or even close performance to real tumors. This result also implies that manual efforts for annotating tumors voxel by voxel (which took years to create) can be significantly reduced in the future. Moreover, our synthetic tumors can automatically generate many examples of small (or even tiny) synthetic tumors and have the potential to improve the success rate of detecting small liver tumors, which is critical for detecting the early stages of cancer. In addition to enriching the training data, our synthesizing strategy also enables us to rigorously assess the AI robustness.Comment: CVPR 202

    Characteristics of Moisture Transfer and Surface Crack Development of a Single Lignite Particle Driven by Humidity Difference

    The research on moisture transfer characteristics and surface crack development of a single lignite particle (SLP) driven by humidity difference is helpful to achieve a better understanding of the fragmentation characteristics of lignite during the moisture transfer process. This is of great significance to the safe operation of a drying system. The characteristics of moisture transfer within SLP driven by humidity difference were studied in different stages. Six drying equations commonly used in the literature were selected to describe the moisture transfer behavior. The apparent diffusion coefficient (Deff) of moisture in each stage was calculated to compare the driving forces of moisture transfer in different stages. The surface crack rate (CR) was used to quantitatively analyze the fragmentation characteristics of SLP caused by moisture transfer. The results showed that the moisture transfer process of SLP driven by humidity difference can be divided into three stages, and stage I is the main moisture removal stage. The larger the particle size, the longer the stage I, while less moisture is removed in this stage. A logarithmic drying equation best simulates the moisture transfer process of SLP. The larger the particle size, the larger the Deff value in each stage. The driving force of moisture transfer in stage I is the largest, which is the opposite of a thermal drying process. CR for SLP has experienced a rapid increase-stable at the highest value-rapid decrease-stable during the moisture transfer process driven by the humidity difference.</p

    DCQA: Document-Level Chart Question Answering towards Complex Reasoning and Common-Sense Understanding

    Visually-situated languages such as charts and plots are omnipresent in real-world documents. These graphical depictions are human-readable and are often analyzed in visually-rich documents to address a variety of questions that necessitate complex reasoning and common-sense responses. Despite the growing number of datasets that aim to answer questions over charts, most only address this task in isolation, without considering the broader context of document-level question answering. Moreover, such datasets lack adequate common-sense reasoning information in their questions. In this work, we introduce a novel task named document-level chart question answering (DCQA). The goal of this task is to conduct document-level question answering, extracting charts or plots in the document via document layout analysis (DLA) first and subsequently performing chart question answering (CQA). The newly developed benchmark dataset comprises 50,010 synthetic documents integrating charts in a wide range of styles (6 styles in contrast to 3 for PlotQA and ChartQA) and includes 699,051 questions that demand a high degree of reasoning ability and common-sense understanding. Besides, we present the development of a potent question-answer generation engine that employs table data, a rich color set, and basic question templates to produce a vast array of reasoning question-answer pairs automatically. Based on DCQA, we devise an OCR-free transformer for document-level chart-oriented understanding, capable of DLA and answering complex reasoning and common-sense questions over charts in an OCR-free manner. Our DCQA dataset is expected to foster research on understanding visualizations in documents, especially for scenarios that require complex reasoning for charts in the visually-rich document. We implement and evaluate a set of baselines, and our proposed method achieves comparable results

    GPR158 in pyramidal neurons mediates social novelty behavior via modulating synaptic transmission in male mice

    Impairment in social communication skills is a hallmark feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The role of G-protein-coupled receptor 158 (GPR158) in ASD remains largely unexplored. In this study, we observed that both constitutive and cell-/tissue-specific knockouts of Gpr158 in pyramidal neurons or the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) result in impaired novelty preference, while sociability remains unaffected in male mice. Notably, the loss of GPR158 leads to a significant decline in excitatory synaptic transmission, characterized by a reduction in glutamate vesicles, as well as the expression and phosphorylation of GluN2B in the mPFC. We successfully rescue the phenotype of social novelty deficits either by reintroducing GPR158 in the mPFC of Gpr158 deficient mice or by chemogenetic activation of pyramidal neurons where Gpr158 is specifically ablated. Our findings indicate that GPR158 in pyramidal neurons plays a specific role in modulating social novelty and may represent a potential target for treating social disorders

    Discovery of novel antitumor dibenzocyclooctatetraene derivatives and related biphenyls as potent inhibitors of NF-κB signaling pathway

    Several dibenzocyclooctatetraene derivatives (5-7) and related biphenyls (8-11) were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for inhibition of cancer cell growth and the NF-κB signaling pathway. Compound 5a, a dibenzocyclooctatetraene succinimide, was discovered as a potent inhibitor of the NF-κB signaling pathway with significant antitumor activity against several human tumor cell lines (GI50 1.38–1.45 μM) and was more potent than paclitaxel against the drug-resistant KBvin cell line. Compound 5a also inhibited LPS-induced NF-κB activation in RAW264.7 cells with an IC50 value of 0.52 μM, prevented IκB-α degradation and p65 nuclear translocation, and suppressed LPS-induced NO production in a dose-dependent manner. The antitumor data in cellular assays indicated that relative positions and types of substituents on the dibenzocyclooctatetraene or acyclic biphenyl as well as torsional angles between the two phenyls are of primary importance to antitumor activity

    “Everybody’s Donghu”: Artistic Resistance and the Reclaiming of Public Space in China

    This paper presents a study of an artistic resistance project in China, “Everybody’s Donghu (East Lake),” held in 2010, 2012, and 2014 with the aim of intervening in the commercial development of an urban scenic space. It aims to demonstrate the practices of resistance in public spaces, particularly in the context of an authoritarian regime such as China, as opposed to democratic societies. First, the recent development of protest and forms of resistance in China will be discussed. It will then focus on the arising conflicts between the conceptualization of an urban space by the urban planners and the imagination of it by the participants. This is followed by a discussion of the tactics deployed in this event, focusing on how the participants appropriate urban space for their own use through performance. Finally, it explores how technology is used in the practices of resistance, concerning the representation of the area through utilization of online space. Overall, this paper argues that appropriating and representing urban space can open up new possibilities of resistance to power and control in the process of urban transformation. </jats:p

    Performance as Intervention

    This article presents a study on the punk phenomenon in China, with a focus on how the punk musicians create new spaces within music production and performances. More importantly, it will examine how these spaces and acts of performance engage with political structures in contemporary China. By analyzing the impact that the political and economic changes of recent decades have had on the nature of Chinese society and culture, the article will first set out to understand the social context in which the punk phenomenon emerged and developed in China. Drawing on interviews with Chinese punk musicians, a discussion of the politics of place will show how a Chinese punk band has challenged a dominated space by performing in the Tiananmen Square. Informed by Attali’s theoretical discussion on “noise”, the next focus will be on an exploration of the process of power negotiation in performing punk music and seeking punk authenticity through non-conforming practices at government/institution-sponsored events. Overall, it is argued that punk performance can carve out a space for alternative political aspirations through interaction with authoritative figures (e.g. in resisting the existing powers), thus challenging state power and institutional oppression in China.</jats:p

    The Making of Singer-songwriters

    This paper addresses the importance of singer-songwriters to understanding China's contemporary folk music ethos. Instead of considering singer-songwriters as those who perform their own material, this paper examines them as a discursive field that involves the notion of authorship. The first part of the paper revisits the history of singer-songwriters as a thickening process of the aesthetic and sociological voices in their singular authoritarian role. Drawing on Negus's “unbundling” concept, the myth of singer-songwriters' heightened investment of authorship is deconstructed via analysis of the dynamic relationships between the song, the performance and the real author. We then demonstrate three kinds of authorship across three phases of the making of folk singer-songwriters, namely confession, parody and scenius. The analysis reveals why and how the making of singer-songwriters and the issue of authorship are useful to the understanding of contemporary folk ethos in China. Overall, the transformation of authorship in the making of singer-songwriters reveals the complexity of textual narratives, the expansion of performance approaches, and the enhancement of sociological agency in the evolution of contemporary folk music. Folk music carves out a distinctive space for reflection on the process of urbanization and its effects on the thought and practice of people of different cultural, social and ethnic backgrounds.</jats:p
