    Joint Power Splitting and Secure Beamforming Design in the Wireless-powered Untrusted Relay Networks

    In this work, we maximize the secrecy rate of the wireless-powered untrusted relay network by jointly designing power splitting (PS) ratio and relay beamforming with the proposed global optimal algorithm (GOA) and local optimal algorithm (LOA). Different from the literature, artificial noise (AN) sent by the destination not only degrades the channel condition of the eavesdropper to improve the secrecy rate, but also becomes a new source of energy powering the untrusted relay based on PS. Hence, it is of high economic benefits and efficiency to take advantage of AN compared with the literature. Simulation results show that LOA can achieve satisfactory secrecy rate performance compared with that of GOA, but with less computation time.Comment: Submitted to GlobeCom201

    Impact of social media-supported flipped classroom on English as a foreign language learners’ writing performance and anxiety

    As flipped classroom has received much attention from researchers and educators, some scholars have investigated the effectiveness of this teaching mode in various English as a foreign language (EFL) settings; however, such an instruction mode has been under-investigated in the Chinese EFL context. Therefore, the current study examined a flipped course’s impact on Chinese EFL learners’ writing performance and anxiety utilizing a pretest-posttest non-equivalent group quasi-experimental design. First, it selected a sample of 50 Chinese EFL learners from two intact language school classes as the participants via the convenience sampling method. Then, it randomly assigned participants of these two intact classes to a control group (n = 24), taught based on the traditional method of writing instruction, and an experimental group (n = 26), instructed based on social media-supported flipped instruction. The study used two writing tasks and a writing anxiety inventory to gather the data from the participants. The descriptive and inferential statistics results showed that the experimental group—taught based on flipped writing instruction—significantly enhanced their writing performance. Moreover, they revealed that the flipped course substantially reduced participants’ writing anxiety. Implications of such findings have been elaborated for EFL research and practice

    Prostaglandin E2 binding peptide screened by phage displaying: a new therapeutic strategy in rheumatoid arthritis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>To investigate the therapeutic potential and mechanism of action of the mimotope of PGE<sub>2 </sub>receptor EP4 (PBP, named by our team) screened by phage displaying technique in the treatment of adjuvant-induced arthritis (AA).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Freund's complete adjuvant-induced arthritis was induced in Wistar rats. At the first clinical sign of disease, mice were given with daily injections of PBP or saline for 21 days. Disease progression was monitored by measurement of paw swelling. Inflammation and joint destruction were assessed histologically. The IL-1β and TNF-α were studied by ELISA in the ankle steeps of arthritis model. The degree of proliferation and apoptosis of synoviocytes of RA patients were assessed by CCK-8 kit and AnnexinⅤ-FITC/PI respectively.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>PBP-treated animals displayed significantly less cartilage and bone destruction than model controls. Tumor necrosis factor α and IL-1β expression were reduced after PBP treatment. The proliferation and apoptosis of synoviocytes of RA patients were influenced by PBP.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The data support the view that PBP is a potential therapy for RA that may help to diminish both joint inflammation and destruction. And the activities of PBP are related with the effect on synoviocytes directly.</p

    Dietary Supplementation With Chinese Herbal Residues or Their Fermented Products Modifies the Colonic Microbiota, Bacterial Metabolites, and Expression of Genes Related to Colon Barrier Function in Weaned Piglets

    To explore the feasibility of dietary Chinese herbal residue (CHR) supplementation in swine production with the objective of valorization, we examined the effects of dietary supplementation with CHR or fermented CHR products on the colonic ecosystem (i.e., microbiota composition, luminal bacterial metabolites, and expression of genes related to the intestinal barrier function in weaned piglets). We randomly assigned 120 piglets to one of four dietary treatment groups: a blank control group, CHR group (dose of supplement 4 kg/t), fermented CHR group (dose of supplement 4 kg/t), and a positive control group (supplemented with 0.04 kg/t virginiamycin, 0.2 kg/t colistin, and 3000 mg/kg zinc 0.04 kg/t virginiamycin, 0.2 kg/t colistin, and 3000 mg/kg zinc oxide). Our results indicate that dietary supplementation with CHR increased (P &lt; 0.05) the mRNA level corresponding to E-cadherin compared with that observed in the other three groups, increased (P &lt; 0.05) the mRNA level corresponding to zonula occludens-1, and decreased (P &lt; 0.05) the quantity of Bifidobacterium spp. When compared with the blank control group. Dietary supplementation with fermented CHR decreased (P &lt; 0.05) the concentration of indole when compared to the positive control group; increased (P &lt; 0.05) the concentrations of short-chain fatty acids compared with the values measured in the CHR group, as well as the mRNA levels corresponding to interleukin 1 alpha, interleukin 2, and tumor necrosis factor alpha. However, supplementation with fermented CHR decreased (P &lt; 0.05) interleukin 12 levels when compared with the blank control group. Collectively, these findings suggest that dietary supplementation with CHR or fermented CHR modifies the gut environment of weaned piglets

    Wafer-scale growth of large arrays of perovskite microplate crystals for functional electronics and optoelectronics

    Methylammonium lead iodide perovskite has attracted intensive interest for its diverse optoelectronic applications. However, most studies to date have been limited to bulk thin films that are difficult to implement for integrated device arrays because of their incompatibility with typical lithography processes. We report the first patterned growth of regular arrays of perovskite microplate crystals for functional electronics and optoelectronics. We show that large arrays of lead iodide microplates can be grown from an aqueous solution through a seeded growth process and can be further intercalated with methylammonium iodide to produce perovskite crystals. Structural and optical characterizations demonstrate that the resulting materials display excellent crystalline quality and optical properties. We further show that perovskite crystals can be selectively grown on prepatterned electrode arrays to create independently addressable photodetector arrays and functional field effect transistors. The ability to grow perovskite microplates and to precisely place them at specific locations offers a new material platform for the fundamental investigation of the electronic and optical properties of perovskite materials and opens a pathway for integrated electronic and optoelectronic systems.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Rare earth elements in oysters and mussels collected from the Chinese coast: Bioaccumulation and human health risks

    Rare earth elements (REEs) are increasingly used in various industries worldwide, resulting in their release into aquatic ecosystems. We evaluated the distribution and bioaccumulation of 14 REEs in marine sediments and biotas along the Chinese coasts. The total concentration of REEs (ÎŁREEs) in sediments was 41.65-170.94 mg/kg. The concentrations of ÎŁREEs were 1.97-4.77 and 0.62-4.96 mg/kg dry mass (DM) for oysters and mussels. The concentration of total light REEs (ÎŁLREEs) was higher than the concentration of total heavy REEs (ÎŁHREEs) at all samples. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF) of ÎŁLREEs was higher than ÎŁHREEs and BAF of ÎŁREE was 0.34-1.49 and 0.25-1.10 for oysters and mussels. The positive correlation between sediments and biotas was higher in mussels than oysters, showing a good potential for being environmental indicators for REEs. The risk of REEs to humans via oysters and mussels consumption could be negligible based on the estimated daily intake

    In situ interface engineering for probing the limit of quantum dot photovoltaic devices.

    Quantum dot (QD) photovoltaic devices are attractive for their low-cost synthesis, tunable band gap and potentially high power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, the experimentally achieved efficiency to date remains far from ideal. Here, we report an in-situ fabrication and investigation of single TiO2-nanowire/CdSe-QD heterojunction solar cell (QDHSC) using a custom-designed photoelectric transmission electron microscope (TEM) holder. A mobile counter electrode is used to precisely tune the interface area for in situ photoelectrical measurements, which reveals a strong interface area dependent PCE. Theoretical simulations show that the simplified single nanowire solar cell structure can minimize the interface area and associated charge scattering to enable an efficient charge collection. Additionally, the optical antenna effect of nanowire-based QDHSCs can further enhance the absorption and boost the PCE. This study establishes a robust 'nanolab' platform in a TEM for in situ photoelectrical studies and provides valuable insight into the interfacial effects in nanoscale solar cells
