    Body Mass Index of Male Youths Aged 18-20 Years of the Han Nationality Living in Different Regions of China

    The study was conducted to assess the nutritional status and levels of body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) and to evaluate the geographical distribution of male youths of the Han nationality in China. In total, 60,773 male youths, aged 18-20 years, of the Han nationality, were categorized into underweight, normal-weight, overweight, and obesity according to the international adult BMI cut-offs. Different levels of nutritional status and BMI of male youths of the Han nationality were compared among different areas. The mean BMI for the whole country was 20.6 in urban areas and 20.0 in rural areas. BMI increased from 20.1 among 18-year old youths to 20.5 among 20-year old youths. The prevalence of underweight among the male youths was 21.6%, while the prevalence of overweight and obesity were 4.6% and 0.6% respectively. For urban youths, the prevalence of underweight, overweight, and obesity were 21.0%, 6.8%, and 1.1% respectively, while these were, respectively, 21.9%, 3.3%, and 0.3% for rural youths. The nutritional status of the male youths in North-China was at the highest level (21.1) among the six areas, and the prevalence of underweight, overweight, and obesity were 14.3%, 9.1%, and 1.4% respectively. The highest prevalence of underweight was 29.8% in the North-West region, and the lowest prevalence of overweight was 2.2% in the South-Middle region, while the lowest prevalence of obesity was 0.2% in the South-West region. The nutritional status of the male youths was significantly different among different areas. Underweight was still prevalent in all male youth groups. Nonetheless, overweight was more prevalent among urban youths than among rural youths and was more prevalent in the North region than in the South region

    Radiative transitions in charmonium from Nf=2N_f=2 twisted mass lattice QCD

    We present a study for charmonium radiative transitions: J/ψηcγJ/\psi\rightarrow\eta_c\gamma, χc0J/Ψγ\chi_{c0}\rightarrow J/\Psi\gamma and hcηcγh_c\rightarrow\eta_c\gamma using Nf=2N_f=2 twisted mass lattice QCD gauge configurations. The single-quark vector form factors for ηc\eta_c and χc0\chi_{c0} are also determined. The simulation is performed at a lattice spacing of a=0.06666a= 0.06666 fm and the lattice size is 323×6432^3\times 64. After extrapolation of lattice data at nonzero Q2Q^2 to 0, we compare our results with previous quenched lattice results and the available experimental values.Comment: typeset with revtex, 15 pages, 11 figures, 4 table

    Genetic Differentiation between Natural and Hatchery Stocks of Japanese Scallop (Mizuhopecten yessoensis) as Revealed by AFLP Analysis

    Japanese scallop (Mizuhopecten yessoensis) is a cold-tolerant bivalve that was introduced to China for aquaculture in 1982. In this study, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers were used to investigate levels of genetic diversity within M. yessoensis cultured stocks and compare them with wild populations. Six pairs of primer combinations generated 368 loci among 332 individuals, in four cultured and three wild populations. High polymorphism at AFLP markers was found within both cultured and wild M. yessoensis populations. The percentage of polymorphic loci ranged from 61.04% to 72.08%, while the mean heterozygosity ranged from 0.2116 to 0.2596. Compared with wild populations, the four hatchery populations showed significant genetic changes, such as lower expected heterozygosity and percentage of polymorphic loci, and smaller frequency of private alleles, all indicative of a reduction in genetic diversity. Some genetic structures were associated with the geographical distribution of samples; with all samples from Dalian and Japan being closely related, while the population from Russia fell into a distinct clade in the phylogenetic analysis. The genetic information derived from this study indicated that intentional or accidental release of selected Japanese scallops into natural sea areas might result in disturbance of local gene pools and loss of genetic variability. We recommend monitoring the genetic variability of selected hatchery populations to enhance conservation of natural Japanese scallop resources

    HMGB1 cytoplasmic translocation in patients with acute liver failure

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a late mediator of lethal systemic inflammation. Acute liver failure (ALF) has been shown to trigger systemic inflammation in clinical and animal studies. To evaluate the possibility of HMGB1 cytoplasmic translocation in ALF, we determined whether HMGB1 is released in hepatocytes and end organ in patients with liver failure/injury.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>HepG2 cell were stimulated with LPS or TNF-α, the increase of HMGB1 extracellularly in the culture medium and intracellularly in various cellular fractions were determined by western blot or immunocytochemistry. To observe sub-cellular location of HMGB1 in hepatocytes, liver specimens were obtained from 6 patients with ALF caused by HBV infection, 10 patients with chronic viral hepatitis B, 6 healthy controls, as well as animals model of ALF by intraperitoneal administration of D-GalN (600 mg/kg) and LPS (0.5 mg/kg).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In HepG2 cell culture, LPS or TNF actively induced HMGB1 cytoplasmic translocation and release in a time- and dose-dependent fashion. In animal model of ALF, cytoplasmic HMGB1 translocation was observed in hepatocyts as early as 3 hours post onset of ALF. In patients with ALF caused by HBV infection, cytoplasmic HMGB1 translocation was similarly observed in some hepatocytes of the liver specimen.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Cytoplasmic HMGB1 translocation may occur during ALF, which may potentially contribute to the pathogenesis of liver inflammatory diseases.</p

    Sixteen Polymorphic Simple Sequence Repeat Markers from Expressed Sequence Tags of the Chinese Mitten Crab Eriocheir sinensis

    The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is an economically important aquaculture species in China. In this study, we developed and evaluated simple sequence repeat markers from expressed sequence tags of E. sinensis. Among the 40 wild E. sinensis individuals tested, 16 loci were polymorphic. The number of alleles per locus ranged from two to ten. The observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.0667 to 0.9667, whereas the expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.0661 to 0.9051. These markers have the potential for use in genetic studies of population structure and intraspecific variation in E. sinensis

    The impact of renal function on the prognostic value of N-terminal pro–B-type natriuretic peptide in patients with coronary artery disease

    Background: The impact of renal function on the prognostic value of N-terminal pro–B-type natriureticpeptide (NT-proBNP) remains unclear in coronary artery disease (CAD). This study sought toinvestigate the value of using NT-proBNP level to predict prognoses of CAD patients with differentestimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFRs).Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted from a single registered database. 2087 consecutivepatients with CAD confirmed by coronary angiography were enrolled. The primary endpoint was allcausemortality.Results: The mean follow-up time was 26.4 ± 11.9 months and death events occurred in 197 cases.The NT-proBNP levels increased with the deterioration of renal function, as well as the optimal cutoffvalues based on eGFR stratification to predict endpoint outcome (179.4 pg/mL, 1443.0 pg/mL,3478.0 pg/mL, for eGFR ≥ 90, 60–90 and &lt; 60 mL/min/1.73 m2, respectively). Compared with theroutine cut-off value or overall optimal one, stratified optimal ones had superior predictive ability forendpoint in each eGFR group (all with the highest Youden’s J statistics). And the prognostic value becameweaker as eGFR level decreased (eGFR ≥ 90 vs. 60–90 vs. &lt; 60 mL/min/1.73 m2, odds ratio [OR]7.7; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.7–33.9 vs. OR 4.8; 95% CI 2.7–8.5 vs. OR 3.0; 95% CI 1.5–6.2).Conclusions: This study demonstrated that NT-proBNP exhibits different predictive values for prognosisfor CAD patients with different levels of renal function. Among the assessed values, the NT-proBNPcut-off value determined using renal function improve the accuracy of the prognosis prediction of CAD.Moreover, lower eGFR is associated with a higher NT-proBNP cut-off value for prognostic prediction
