Enhanced visibility of graphene: effect of one-dimensional photonic crystal
We investigate theoretically the light reflectance of a graphene layer
prepared on the top of one-dimensional Si/SiO2 photonic crystal (1DPC). It is
shown that the visibility of the graphene layers is enhanced greatly when 1DPC
is added, and the visibility can be tuned by changing the incident angle and
light wavelengths. This phenomenon is caused by the absorption of the graphene

Analytic Spectra of CMB Anisotropies and Polarization Generated by Relic Gravitational Waves with Modification due to Neutrino Free-Streaming
We present an analytical calculation of the spectra of CMB anisotropies and
polarizations generated by relic gravitational waves (RGWs). As a substantial
extension to the previous studies, three new ingredients are included in this
work. Firstly, the analytic and are given; especially the
latter can be useful to extract signal of RGWs from the observed data in the
zero multipole method. Secondly, a fitting formula of the decaying factor on
small scales is given, coming from the visibility function around the photon
decoupling. Thirdly, the impacts by the neutrino free-streaming (NFS) is
examined, a process that occurred in the early universe and leaves observable
imprints on CMB via RGWs.
It is found that the analytic and have profiles
agreeing with the numeric ones, except that in a range
and the trough of around have some deviations.
With the new damping factor, the analytic and match with
the numeric ones with the maximum errors only up to the first three
peaks for , improving the previous studies substantially. The
correspondence of the positions of peaks of and those of RGWs are
also demonstrated explicitly. We also find that NFS reduces the amplitudes of
by for and shifts slightly
their peaks to smaller angles. Detailed analyses show that the zero multipoles
, where crosses 0, are shifted to larger values by NFS. This
shifting effect is as important as those causedby different inflation models

77Se NMR study of pairing symmetry and spin dynamics in KyFe2-xSe2
We present a 77Se NMR study of the newly discovered iron selenide
superconductor KyFe2-xSe2, in which Tc = 32 K. Below Tc, the Knight shift 77K
drops sharply with temperature, providing strong evidence for singlet pairing.
Above Tc, Korringa-type relaxation indicates Fermi-liquid behavior. Our
experimental results set strict constraints on the nature of possible theories

Mixing by polymers: experimental test of decay regime of mixing
By using high molecular weight fluorescent passive tracers with different
diffusion coefficients and by changing the fluid velocity we study dependence
of a characteristic mixing length on the Peclet number, , which controls
the mixing efficiency. The mixing length is found to be related to by a
power law, , and increases faster than
expected for an unbounded chaotic flow. Role of the boundaries in the mixing
length abnormal growth is clarified. The experimental findings are in a good

High fidelity image counterfactuals with probabilistic causal models
We present a general causal generative modelling framework for accurate estimation of high fidelity image counterfactuals with deep structural causal models. Estimation of interventional and counterfactual queries for high-dimensional structured variables, such as images, remains a challenging task. We leverage ideas from causal mediation analysis and advances in generative modelling to design new deep causal mechanisms for structured variables in causal models. Our experiments demonstrate that our proposed mechanisms are capable of accurate abduction and estimation of direct, indirect and total effects as measured by axiomatic soundness of counterfactuals
Spiral cracks in drying precipitates
We investigate the formation of spiral crack patterns during the desiccation
of thin layers of precipitates in contact with a substrate. This
symmetry-breaking fracturing mode is found to arise naturally not from torsion
forces, but from a propagating stress front induced by the fold-up of the
fragments. We model their formation mechanism using a coarse-grain model for
fragmentation and successfully reproduce the spiral cracks. Fittings of
experimental and simulation data show that the spirals are logarithmic,
corresponding to constant deviation from a circular crack path. Theoretical
aspects of the logarithmic spirals are discussed. In particular we show that
this occurs generally when the crack speed is proportional to the propagating

The significance of new records of benthic red algae (Rhodophyta) for Hainan Island (and China) between 1990 and 2016
We present an annotated list of new finds of red algae from Hainan Island, Southern China,
including those found in 1990 and 1992 during the German-Chinese expeditions to Hainan Island
and in 2008–2016 by Titlyanova, Titlyanov, and Li. Between 1990 and 1992, a total of 64 taxa of red
algae were newly recorded for Hainan Island. Of these 15 species were new records for China.
During the period 2008–2016, a further 54 taxa were newly recorded for Hainan Island, of which 20
were new records for China. The full list of new taxa includes taxonomic forms, dates, and locales,
together with known biogeographical distributions. During both periods, the apparent enrichment
of red algal marine flora has occurred in a similar way—mainly at the expense of epiphytes with
filamentous, thin-filamentous, and finely branched forms. We believe that the changes in the flora
of Hainan Island have been influenced by both anthropogenic and natural factors including in
particular exploitation of herbivores, nutrient pollution, and coral bleaching
