    Numerical analysis of aerodynamic features of porosity-optimized wind barriers and running safety of train

    A 2-D model-bridge with different porosity barriers is simulated with CFD to explore the windbreak mechanism. The accuracy of simulation is verified by a wind tunnel test. The porosity of the barriers is optimized by analyzing the aerodynamic features of the train-bridge system subjected to cross winds. It is found that wind velocity on the windward track changes greater than that on the leeward track. The train rolls towards the barrier when porosity is lower than 10 % and away from barrier when porosity is higher than 30 %, and the rolling moment is minimized when porosity is 30 %. The dynamic response of running train with and without wind barrier is compared, from which the windbreak effect of barrier is identified

    Determinants of bank profitability: evidence from the UK

    This paper examines bank-specific and macroeconomic factors that affect bank profitability. Using an unbalanced panel dataset of 59 UK banks over the period 2011-2018, the paper applies fixed effects (FE) models and the system generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator. Empirical results exhibit that bank profitability is positively determined by cost management efficiency and capital strength. However, banks with more liquidity, higher levels of credit risk and a larger size tend to be less profitable. With regards to macroeconomic determinants, economic growth has no significant impact on bank profits, while inflation and unemployment are negatively related to bank profitability

    Effect of He Plasma Jet Versus Surface Plasma on the Metabolites of Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells

    Cold atmospheric plasma, including plasma jet and surface plasma, can promote the apoptosis of cancer cells without causing significant damage to surrounding normal cells, which was hopeful to be applied to the clinical cancer therapy. However, experimental plasma devices used directly to clinical experiments has challenges in technology and methods, especially the difference in killing tumor cells efficiency of these two common plasma sources. Therefore, it is great necessity to explore the differences in treating tumors between different plasma sources. This paper achieved good killing efficiency by using two kinds of cold atmospheric plasma generating devices, namely plasma jet and surface plasma treatment along acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The results showed that the He plasma jet kills leukemia cells more efficiently than surface plasma with the same voltage and frequency and the same time. By GC-TOFMS and metabolomics analysis, this paper compared the differential metabolites of leukemia cells treated by two plasma devices and the key metabolic pathways closely related to differential metabolites. Simultaneously, we found alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism was most correlated with a key differential metabolite, glutamine. It was found that the glutaminase activity of He plasma jet group was lower than that of surface plasma group, which might be a reason for He plasma jet group to kill tumor cells better. It was also worth noting that relative quantity of glucose metabolites of plasma jet treatment group was lower than that of surface plasma treatment group.     NO2- and NO3- Enhance Cold Atmospheric Plasma Induced Cancer Cell Death by Generation of ONOO-

    Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a rapidly developed technology that has been widely applied in biomedicine especially in cancer treatment. Due to the generation of various active species in plasma, CAP could induce various tumor cells death and showed a promising potential in cancer therapy. To enhance the biological effects of gas plasma, changing the discharging parameters is the most commonly used method, yet increasing discharging power will lead to a higher possibility of simultaneously damage surrounding tissues. In this study, by adding nontoxic concentration of additional nitrite and nitrate in the medium, we found that anti-tumor effect of CAP treatment was enhanced in the same discharging parameters. By microplate reader and cell flow cytometer we measured several extracellular and intracellular RONS and found that ONOO- was mostly correlated with the enhanced cancer cell killing effect. We proposed that more nitrogen supplies such as nitrite and nitrate could increase the production of RNS especially ONOO- and resulted in a better killing effect to cancer cells. Our results provided a new strategy to enhance the antitumor effect by plasma jet treatment without changing the discharging parameters. © 2018 Author(s)

    Clinicopathological characteristics of gastric cancer patients with dermatomyositis and analysis of perioperative management: a case series study

    BackgroundThis study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of gastric cancer (GC) patients with dermatomyositis (DM) and summarize the perioperative outcomes.MethodsThe clinical and pathological data of five patients diagnosed with co-occurring DM and GC (DM-GC group) were retrospectively analyzed, who were admitted to the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Ren ji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, between January 2012 and April 2023. Their data were compared with 618 GC patients (GC-1 group) from September 2016 to August 2017 and 35 GC patients who were meticulously screened from 14,580 GC cases from January 2012 and April 2023. The matching criteria included identical gender, age, tumor location, TNM stage, and surgical procedure (7 GC patients were matched for each DM-GC patient).ResultsAnalysis indicated that the DM-GC group comprised four female and one male patient. The female proportion was significantly higher (P = 0.032) than that of GC-1 group. In DM-GC group, four DM patients were diagnosed as GC within 12 months. One DM patients was diagnosed as GC within 15 months. Among them, four patients presented with varying degrees of skin rashes, muscle weakness while one patient had elevated CK levels as the typical symptom. Similarly, the preoperative tumor markers (CA-199 and CA-125) in the DM-GC group were significantly higher than normal levels (CA-199: 100 vs. 28.6%, P = 0.002; CA-125: 40 vs. 2.9%, P = 0.003) compared to GC-2 group. Moreover, postoperative complication incidence and the length of hospital stay were significantly higher in the DM-GC than GC-2 group [complication rate: 40 vs. 8.6%, P = 0.047; hospital stay: 15 days (range: 9–28) vs. 9 days (range: 8–10), P = 0.021].ConclusionGC Patients with dermatomyositis are more prone to experience postoperative complications and longer hospital stay

    Quercetin Pretreatment Attenuates Hepatic Ischemia Reperfusion-Induced Apoptosis and Autophagy by Inhibiting ERK/NF- κ

    Background. Hepatic ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury is a common phenomenon in transplantation or trauma. The aim of the present study was to determine the protective effect of quercetin (QE) on hepatic IR injury via the ERK/NF-κB pathway. Methods. Mice were randomized into the sham, IR, QE100 + IR, and QE200 + IR groups. Quercetin was administered intragastrically daily at two doses (100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg) for 5 days prior to IR injury. The expression levels of liver enzymes, inflammatory cytokines, and other marker proteins were determined at 2, 8, and 24 hours after IR. And they were compared among these groups. Results. Compared with the IR group, the treatment of QE reduced the release of cytokines, leading to inhibition of apoptosis and autophagy via downregulation of the ERK/NF-κB pathway in this model of hepatic IR injury. Conclusion. Apoptosis and autophagy caused by hepatic IR injury were inhibited by QE following a reduction in the release of inflammatory cytokines, and the relationship between the two may be associated with inactivation of the ERK/NF-κB pathway
