    Overall Survival of Primary Single Intracranial Atypical Meningioma with Different Surgical and Postoperative Treatment Options: Evidence from the SEER Database

Inclusion criteria comprised patients who underwent either gross total resection (GTR) or subtotal resection (STR). The inverse probability weighting (IPW) method using generalized boosted models was used to achieve balance in variables across various treatment groups. Subsequent to IPW, multivariate Cox analysis and Kaplan–Meier analysis were conducted, with OS as the endpoint.Results: GTR was conducted on 1650 patients, while STR was conducted on 1109 patients. Among these, 432 patients who underwent GTR and 401 patients who underwent STR received postoperative radiotherapy (PORT). In the case of patients who were under 60 years old, PORT emerged as a significant protective factor for OS in those who underwent STR (HR 0.44; 95% CI 0.23– 0.84; p = 0.013). Survival curves demonstrated that patients who underwent STR with PORT exhibited comparable OS to those who underwent GTR without PORT (p = 0.546). Conversely, for patients aged 60 years or older, PORT emerged as an independent risk factor for both GTR (HR 1.42; 95% CI 1.00– 2.00; p = 0.048) and STR (HR 1.81; 95% CI 1.26– 2.60; p = 0.001).Conclusion: PORT may contribute to improving OS in primary single atypical meningioma patients under 60 years old who receive STR. However, in older patients who underwent either GTR or STR, the administration of PORT may be associated with a potential risk of OS. Therefore, age should be taken into account in applying PORT therapy, and the optimal treatment strategy for PORT in patients with atypical meningiomas needs to be further explored and validated.Keywords: age, atypical meningioma, gross total resection, postoperative radiotherapy, subtotal resectio

    An Improved Method for Monitoring Multiscale Plant Species Diversity of Alpine Grassland Using UAV: A Case Study in the Source Region of the Yellow River, China.

    Plant species diversity (PSD) is essential in evaluating the function and developing the management and conservation strategies of grassland. However, over a large region, an efficient and high precision method to monitor multiscale PSD (α-, β-, and γ-diversity) is lacking. In this study, we proposed and improved an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based PSD monitoring method (UAVB) and tested the feasibility, and meanwhile, explored the potential relationship between multiscale PSD and precipitation on the alpine grassland of the source region of the Yellow River (SRYR), China. Our findings showed that: (1) UAVB was more representative (larger monitoring areas and more species identified with higher α- and γ-diversity) than the traditional ground-based monitoring method, though a few specific species (small in size) were difficult to identify; (2) UAVB is suitable for monitoring the multiscale PSD over a large region (the SRYR in this study), and the improvement by weighing the dominance of species improved the precision of α-diversity (higher R 2 and lower P values of the linear regressions); and (3) the species diversity indices (α- and β-diversity) increased first and then they tended to be stable with the increase of precipitation in SRYR. These findings conclude that UAVB is suitable for monitoring multiscale PSD of an alpine grassland community over a large region, which will be useful for revealing the relationship of diversity-function, and helpful for conservation and sustainable management of the alpine grassland.Published onlin

    The fatty acid receptor CD36 promotes HCC progression through activating Src/PI3K/AKT axis-dependent aerobic glycolysis

    Metabolic reprogramming is a new hallmark of cancer but it remains poorly defined in hepatocellular carcinogenesis (HCC). The fatty acid receptor CD36 is associated with both lipid and glucose metabolism in the liver. However, the role of CD36 in metabolic reprogramming in the progression of HCC still remains to be elucidated. In the present study, we found that CD36 is highly expressed in human HCC as compared with non-tumor hepatic tissue. CD36 overexpression promoted the proliferation, migration, invasion, and in vivo tumor growth of HCC cells, whereas silencing CD36 had the opposite effects. By analysis of cell metabolic phenotype, CD36 expression showed a positive association with extracellular acidification rate, a measure of glycolysis, instead of oxygen consumption rate. Further experiments verified that overexpression of CD36 resulted in increased glycolysis flux and lactic acid production. Mechanistically, CD36 induced mTOR-mediated oncogenic glycolysis via activation of Src/PI3K/AKT signaling axis. Pretreatment of HCC cells with PI3K/AKT/mTOR inhibitors largely blocked the tumor-promoting effect of CD36. Our findings suggest that CD36 exerts a stimulatory effect on HCC growth and metastasis, through mediating aerobic glycolysis by the Src/PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway

    Synthesis of MoS2 nanoparticles using MoO3 nanobelts as precursor via a PVP-assisted hydrothermal method

    The synthesis of MoS2 nanoparticles from MoO3 with a certain morphology through a surfactant-assisted hydrothermal process is described in this paper. MoO3, which has a nanobelt morphology with a width of 100-500 nm and a length from one to several micrometers, is used as the precursor, and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) is used as the surfactant. The morphology of the resulting MoS2 nanomaterial has been characterized by the field-emission scanning electron microscope, which shows that the obtained nanoparticles have diameters ranging from 50 to 100 nm with rough surfaces. Additionally, the composition and crystallinity as well as the phase information of the produced nanoparticles have been characterized by the energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer and X-ray diffraction. Specifically, in this process, the presence of PVP plays a crucial role for the successful fabrication of the nanoparticle morphology, which may be due to the formation of PVP micelles leading to an oriented aggregation of MoS2 nuclei.     Identification of a Novel Marine Fish Virus, Singapore Grouper Iridovirus-Encoded MicroRNAs Expressed in Grouper Cells by Solexa Sequencing

    BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are ubiquitous non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. An increasing number of studies has revealed that viruses can also encode miRNAs, which are proposed to be involved in viral replication and persistence, cell-mediated antiviral immune response, angiogenesis, and cell cycle regulation. Singapore grouper iridovirus (SGIV) is a pathogenic iridovirus that has severely affected grouper aquaculture in China and Southeast Asia. Comprehensive knowledge about the related miRNAs during SGIV infection is helpful for understanding the infection and the pathogenic mechanisms. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To determine whether SGIV encoded miRNAs during infection, a small RNA library derived from SGIV-infected grouper (GP) cells was constructed and sequenced by Illumina/Solexa deep-sequencing technology. We recovered 6,802,977 usable reads, of which 34,400 represented small RNA sequences encoded by SGIV. Sixteen novel SGIV-encoded miRNAs were identified by a computational pipeline, including a miRNA that shared a similar sequence to herpesvirus miRNA HSV2-miR-H4-5p, which suggests miRNAs are conserved in far related viruses. Generally, these 16 miRNAs are dispersed throughout the SGIV genome, whereas three are located within the ORF057L region. Some SGIV-encoded miRNAs showed marked sequence and length heterogeneity at their 3' and/or 5' end that could modulate their functions. Expression levels and potential biological activities of these viral miRNAs were examined by stem-loop quantitative RT-PCR and luciferase reporter assay, respectively, and 11 of these viral miRNAs were present and functional in SGIV-infected GP cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provided a genome-wide view of miRNA production for iridoviruses and identified 16 novel viral miRNAs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of miRNAs encoded by aquatic animal viruses. The results provide a useful resource for further in-depth studies on SGIV infection and iridovirus pathogenesis

    Validated spectrophotometric methods for determination of Alendronate sodium in tablets through nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Alendronate (ALD) is a member of the bisphosphonate family which is used for the treatment of osteoporosis, bone metastasis, Paget's disease, hypocalcaemia associated with malignancy and other conditions that feature bone fragility. ALD is a non-chromophoric compound so its determination by conventional spectrophotometric methods is not possible. So two derivatization reactions were proposed for determination of ALD through the reaction with 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1,3-diazole (NBD-Cl) and 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) as chromogenic derivatizing reagents.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Three simple and sensitive spectrophotometric methods are described for the determination of ALD. Method I is based on the reaction of ALD with NBD-Cl. Method II involved heat-catalyzed derivatization of ALD with DNFB, while, Method III is based on micellar-catalyzed reaction of the studied drug with DNFB at room temperature. The reactions products were measured at 472, 378 and 374 nm, for methods I, II and III, respectively. Beer's law was obeyed over the concentration ranges of 1.0-20.0, 4.0-40.0 and 1.5-30.0 μg/mL with lower limits of detection of 0.09, 1.06 and 0.06 μg/mL for Methods I, II and III, respectively. The proposed methods were applied for quantitation of the studied drug in its pure form with mean percentage recoveries of 100.47 ± 1.12, 100.17 ± 1.21 and 99.23 ± 1.26 for Methods I, II and III, respectively. Moreover the proposed methods were successfully applied for determination of ALD in different tablets. Proposals of the reactions pathways have been postulated.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The proposed spectrophotometric methods provided sensitive, specific and inexpensive analytical procedures for determination of the non-chromophoric drug alendronate either per se or in its tablet dosage forms without interference from common excipients.</p> <p>Graphical abstract</p> <p><display-formula><graphic file="1752-153X-6-25-i3.gif"/></display-formula></p
