    Aberrant gut microbiota alters host metabolome and impacts renal failure in humans and rodents

    OBJECTIVE: Patients with renal failure suffer from symptoms caused by uraemic toxins, possibly of gut microbial origin, as deduced from studies in animals. The aim of the study is to characterise relationships between the intestinal microbiome composition, uraemic toxins and renal failure symptoms in human end-stage renal disease (ESRD). DESIGN: Characterisation of gut microbiome, serum and faecal metabolome and human phenotypes in a cohort of 223 patients with ESRD and 69 healthy controls. Multidimensional data integration to reveal links between these datasets and the use of chronic kidney disease (CKD) rodent models to test the effects of intestinal microbiome on toxin accumulation and disease severity. RESULTS: A group of microbial species enriched in ESRD correlates tightly to patient clinical variables and encode functions involved in toxin and secondary bile acids synthesis; the relative abundance of the microbial functions correlates with the serum or faecal concentrations of these metabolites. Microbiota from patients transplanted to renal injured germ-free mice or antibiotic-treated rats induce higher production of serum uraemic toxins and aggravated renal fibrosis and oxidative stress more than microbiota from controls. Two of the species, Eggerthella lenta and Fusobacterium nucleatum, increase uraemic toxins production and promote renal disease development in a CKD rat model. A probiotic Bifidobacterium animalis decreases abundance of these species, reduces levels of toxins and the severity of the disease in rats. CONCLUSION: Aberrant gut microbiota in patients with ESRD sculpts a detrimental metabolome aggravating clinical outcomes, suggesting that the gut microbiota will be a promising target for diminishing uraemic toxicity in those patients.     Prevalence and trend of hepatitis C virus infection among blood donors in Chinese mainland: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Blood transfusion is one of the most common transmission pathways of hepatitis C virus (HCV). This paper aims to provide a comprehensive and reliable tabulation of available data on the epidemiological characteristics and risk factors for HCV infection among blood donors in Chinese mainland, so as to help make prevention strategies and guide further research.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A systematic review was constructed based on the computerized literature database. Infection rates and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated using the approximate normal distribution model. Odds ratios and 95% CI were calculated by fixed or random effects models. Data manipulation and statistical analyses were performed using STATA 10.0 and ArcGIS 9.3 was used for map construction.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Two hundred and sixty-five studies met our inclusion criteria. The pooled prevalence of HCV infection among blood donors in Chinese mainland was 8.68% (95% CI: 8.01%-9.39%), and the epidemic was severer in North and Central China, especially in Henan and Hebei. While a significant lower rate was found in Yunnan. Notably, before 1998 the pooled prevalence of HCV infection was 12.87% (95%CI: 11.25%-14.56%) among blood donors, but decreased to 1.71% (95%CI: 1.43%-1.99%) after 1998. No significant difference was found in HCV infection rates between male and female blood donors, or among different blood type donors. The prevalence of HCV infection was found to increase with age. During 1994-1995, the prevalence rate reached the highest with a percentage of 15.78% (95%CI: 12.21%-19.75%), and showed a decreasing trend in the following years. A significant difference was found among groups with different blood donation types, Plasma donors had a relatively higher prevalence than whole blood donors of HCV infection (33.95% <it>vs </it>7.9%).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The prevalence of HCV infection has rapidly decreased since 1998 and kept a low level in recent years, but some provinces showed relatively higher prevalence than the general population. It is urgent to make efficient measures to prevent HCV secondary transmission and control chronic progress, and the key to reduce the HCV incidence among blood donors is to encourage true voluntary blood donors, strictly implement blood donation law, and avoid cross-infection.</p

    Is occupation a good predictor of self-rated health in China?

    China's rapidly changing economic landscape has led to widening social inequalities. Occupational status in terms of occupational type and prestige may reflect these socio-structural shifts of social position and be more predictive of self-rated health status than income and education, which may only reflect more gradual acquisitions of social status over time. The goals of this study were to understand the role of occupational status in predicting self-rated health, which is well known to be associated with long-term mortality, as well as compare the occupational status to the other major socioeconomic indicators of income and education.Data from the 2010 baseline surveys of the China Family Panel Studies, which utilized multi-stage probability sampling with implicit stratification was used. Logistic regression was used to examine the relationship of various socioeconomic indicators (i.e. occupational status, income, and education) with self-rated health as the primary outcome of interest. A series of models considered the associations of occupational category or occupational prestige with self-rated health.The final sample consisted of 14,367 employed adults aged 18-60, which was nationally representative of working adults in China. We found that occupation was not a major predictor of self-rated health in China when age, ethnicity, location, marital status, physical and mental health status were controlled for, with the exception of women working in lower grade management and professional jobs (OR = 1.82, 95% CI: 1.03-3.22). In comparison, income followed by education exhibited greater association with self-rated health. The highest income group had the least probability to report poor health (In men: OR = 0.30, 95% CI: 0.21-0.43. In women: OR = 0.44, 95% CI: 0.26-0.73). People educated with junior high school had better self-rated health than those with primary and below education level (In men: OR = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.50-0.75. In women: OR = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.42-0.68). Income, education and occupation were correlated with each other.Within the context of rapid societal changes in China, income and its implications for greater healthcare access and benefits had the greatest association with self-rated health followed by education. Occupational status was not associated. Occupational categories and prestige should be better adapted to reflect China's unique sociopolitical and historical context

    A new approach for lofted B-spline surface approximation to scanned data

    This paper addresses the problem of B-spline surface approximation to rows of points by B-spline surface lofting. Lofting is a well known surface create technique and has been used in CAD and CAGD. However, the traditional lofting approach tends to result in an astonishing number of control points in the process of merging the different knot vectors. This paper presents a new approach fixing this problem. The approach includes a novel process of creating a set of compact B-spline curves from the given points. The process is based on the binary search and the least-squares method, determining a set of local common knot vectors of most of rows of points, which meet the given conditions. Then, fully common knot vectors have been determined by the method of merging different knot vectors. The proposed approach is efficient in computation and can realize more efficient data reduction than previous approach without losing the shape of the lofted surface. Several experimental results demonstrate the usefulness and quality of the proposed approach

    Anomalous temperature dependence of photoluminescence in GaInNAs/GaAs multiple quantum wells

    Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of GaInNAs/GaAs multiple quantum wells grown on a GaAs substrate by molecular beam epitaxy are measured in a range of temperatures and excitation power densities. The energy position of the dominant PL peak shows an anomalous S-shape temperature dependence instead of the Varshni relation. By careful inspection, especially for the PL under lower excitation power density, two near bandedge peaks are well identified. These are assigned to carriers localized in nitrogen-induced bound states and interband excitonic recombinations, respectively. It is suggested that the temperature-induced switch of such two luminescence peaks in relative intensity causes a significant mechanism responsible for the S-shape shift observed in GaInNAs. A quantitative model based on the thermal depopulation of carriers is used to explain the temperature dependence of the PL peak related to N-induced bound states

    The effects of concomitant In and N incorporation on the photoluminescence of GaInNAs

    We investigated the effects of concomitant In- and N-incorporation on the photoluminescence (PL) of GaInNAs grown by molecular beam epitaxy. In comparison with the N-free GaInAs epilayer, the PL spectra of the GaInNAs epilayer exhibit an anomalous S-shape temperature dependence of dominant luminescence peak. Through further careful inspection, two PL peaks are clearly discerned and are associated with the interband excitonic recombinations and excitons bound to N-induced isoelectronic impurity states, respectively. By comparing the PL spectra of GaInNAs/ GaAs quantum wells (QWs) with those of In-free GaNAs/GaAs QWs grown under similar conditions, it is found that the concomitant In- and N-incorporation reduces the density of impurities and has an effect to improve the intrinsic optical transition of GaInNAs, but also enhance the N-induced clustering effects. At last, we found that rapid thermal annealing can significantly reduce the density of N-induced impurities. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved

    Temperature-induced switching-over of the luminescence transitions in GaInNAs/GaAs quantum wells

    Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the GaInNAs/GaAs single quantum well (SQW) with different N compositions are carefully studied in a range of temperatures and excitation power densities. The anomalous S-shape temperature dependence of the PL peak is analysed based on the competition and switching-over between the peaks related to N-induced localized states and the peak related to interband excitonic recombination. It is found that with increasing N composition, the localized energy increases and the turning point of the S-shape temperature dependence occurs at higher temperature, where the localized carriers in the bandtail states obtain enough thermal activation energy to be dissociated and delocalized. The rapid thermal annealing (RTA) effectively reduces the localized energy and causes a decrease of the switching-over temperature

    Stable few-layer MoS2 rectifying diodes formed by plasma-assisted doping

    We present a method for making stable MoS2 rectifying diodes using selected-area plasma treatment. The transport and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic characterizations of MoS2 transistors treated with different plasmas confirm that the rectifying characteristics of MoS2 diodes are attributed to plasma-induced p-doping and p-n junctions in MoS2. Such plasma-doped diodes exhibit high forward/reverse current ratios (similar to 10(4) for SF6-treated diodes) and a superior long-term stability. They can play an important role in the development of nanoelectronic devices. In addition, the presented plasma-assisted doping process could be also used for making ambipolar MoS2 transistors and functionalizing other emerging two-dimensional materials

    Lasing of CdSexS1-x quantum dots in a glass spherical microcavity

    A glass spherical microcavity only a few microns in diameter embedded with CdSexS1-x quantum dots (QDs) was fabricated using a physical method; it exhibited good optical stability under continuous-wave laser excitation with high power. We investigated the excitation power dependences of the emission intensity and the linewidth of both transverse electric and transverse magnetic resonance peaks of whispering gallery modes. Stimulated emission behaviour of multi-frequency modes is observed at room temperature. The low threshold value and large mode separation makes QD-containing microspheres promising for visible microlaser applications

    Optical study on the coupled GaAsSb/GaAs double quantum wells

    The structural and optical properties of GaAsSb/GaAs-based quantum wells (QWs) are investigated. The interface quality of GaAsSb/GaAs/GaAsP coupled double (CD) QW structures is improved due to the strain compensation of epitaxial layers. The CD QWs possess a W-shape of energy band structure, and the optical properties display the features characteristic of a type-IQW when the GaAsSb layer thickness is thin enough
