Development of a Mandarin expressive and receptive vocabulary test for children using cochlear implants
Free papers 8 - Cochlear Implantation 2INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implants provide children with profound hearing loss access to sounds and improve their speech perception, speech production and language skills. Outcomes on language development are useful for counseling and in planning habilitation programs. However, such research in Mainland China ...published_or_final_versio
Pixel-level hand detection with shape-aware structured forests
LNCS v. 9006 entitled: Computer Vision -- ACCV 2014: 12th Asian Conference on Computer Vision, Singapore, Singapore, November 1-5, 2014, Revised Selected Papers, Part IVHand detection has many important applications in HCI, yet it is a challenging problem because the appearance of hands can vary greatly in images. In this paper, we propose a novel method for efficient pixel-level hand detection. Unlike previous method which assigns a binary label to every pixel independently, our method estimates a probability shape mask for a pixel using structured forests. This approach can better exploit hand shape information in the training data, and enforce shape constraints in the estimation. Aggregation of multiple predictions generated from neighboring pixels further improves the robustness of our method. We evaluate our method on both ego-centric videos and unconstrained still images. Experiment results show that our method can detect hands efficiently and outperform other state-of-the-art methods.postprin
Asymptotic properties of eigenmatrices of a large sample covariance matrix
Let where is a matrix

is the Mar\v{c}enko--Pastur law with parameter ; which
converges to a positive constant as , and and are unit vectors in ,
having indices and , ranging in a compact subset
of a finite-dimensional Euclidean space. In this paper, we prove that the
sequence converges weakly to a
-dimensional Gaussian process. This result provides further evidence in
support of the conjecture that the distribution of the eigenmatrix of is
asymptotically close to that of a Haar-distributed unitary matrix.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/10-AAP748 the Annals of

A hand shape recognizer from simple sketches
Hand shape recognition is one of the most important techniques used in human-computer interaction. However, it often takes developers great efforts to customize their hand shape recognizers. In this paper, we present a novel method that enables a hand shape recognizer to be built automatically from simple sketches, such as a 'stick-figure' of a hand shape. We introduce the Hand Boltzmann Machine (HBM), a generative model built upon unsupervised learning, to represent the hand shape space of a binary image, and formulate the user provided sketches as an initial guidance for sampling to generate realistic hand shape samples. Such samples are then used to train a hand shape recognizer. We evaluate our method and compare it with other state-of-the-art models in three aspects, namely i) its capability of handling different sketch input, ii) its classification accuracy, and iii) its ability to handle occlusions. Experimental results demonstrate the great potential of our method in real world applications. © 2013 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
