    Pressure Effect on the superconducting properties of LaO_{1-x}F_{x}FeAs(x=0.11) superconductor

    Diamagnetic susceptibility measurements under high hydrostatic pressure (up to 1.03 GPa) were carried out on the newly discovered Fe-based superconductor LaO_{1-x}F_{x}FeAs(x=0.11). The transition temperature T_c, defined as the point at the maximum slope of superconducting transition, was enhanced almost linearly by hydrostatic pressure, yielding a dT_c/dP of about 1.2 K/GPa. Differential diamagnetic susceptibility curves indicate that the underlying superconducting state is complicated. It is suggested that pressure plays an important role on pushing low T_c superconducting phase toward the main (optimal) superconducting phase.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    Angular dependence of resistivity in the superconducting state of NdFeAsO0.82_{0.82}F0.18_{0.18} single crystals

    We report the results of angle dependent resistivity of NdFeAsO0.82_{0.82}F0.18_{0.18} single crystals in the superconducting state. By doing the scaling of resistivity within the frame of the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory, it is found that the angle dependent resistivity measured under different magnetic fields at a certain temperature can be collapsed onto one curve. As a scaling parameter, the anisotropy Γ\Gamma can be determined for different temperatures. It is found that Γ(T)\Gamma(T) increases slowly with decreasing temperature, varying from Γ\Gamma \simeq 5.48 at T=50 K to Γ\Gamma \simeq 6.24 at T=44 K. This temperature dependence can be understood within the picture of multi-band superconductivity.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    Off the Beaten Path: Let's Replace Term-Based Retrieval with k-NN Search

    Retrieval pipelines commonly rely on a term-based search to obtain candidate records, which are subsequently re-ranked. Some candidates are missed by this approach, e.g., due to a vocabulary mismatch. We address this issue by replacing the term-based search with a generic k-NN retrieval algorithm, where a similarity function can take into account subtle term associations. While an exact brute-force k-NN search using this similarity function is slow, we demonstrate that an approximate algorithm can be nearly two orders of magnitude faster at the expense of only a small loss in accuracy. A retrieval pipeline using an approximate k-NN search can be more effective and efficient than the term-based pipeline. This opens up new possibilities for designing effective retrieval pipelines.     Single vortex structure in two models of iron pnictide s±s^\pm superconductivity

    The structure of a single vortex in a FeAs superconductor is studied in the framework of two formulations of superconductivity for the recently proposed sign-reversed ss wave (s±s^\pm) scenario: {\it (i)} a continuum model taking into account the existence of an electron and a hole band with a repulsive local interaction between the two; {\it (ii)} a lattice tight-binding model with two orbitals per unit cell and a next-nearest-neighbour attractive interaction. In the first model, the local density of states (LDOS) at the vortex centre, as a function of energy, exhibits a peak at the Fermi level, while in the second model such LDOS peak is deviated from the Fermi level and its energy depends on band filling. An impurity located outside the vortex core has little effect on the LDOS peak, but an impurity close to the vortex core can almost suppress it and modify its position.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures.     Specifying angular momentum and center of mass for vacuum initial data sets

    We show that it is possible to perturb arbitrary vacuum asymptotically flat spacetimes to new ones having exactly the same energy and linear momentum, but with center of mass and angular momentum equal to any preassigned values measured with respect to a fixed affine frame at infinity. This is in contrast to the axisymmetric situation where a bound on the angular momentum by the mass has been shown to hold for black hole solutions. Our construction involves changing the solution at the linear level in a shell near infinity, and perturbing to impose the vacuum constraint equations.     Universal cloning of continuous quantum variables

    The cloning of quantum variables with continuous spectra is analyzed. A universal - or Gaussian - quantum cloning machine is exhibited that copies equally well the states of two conjugate variables such as position and momentum.     Epitaxial growth and anisotropy of La(O,F)FeAs thin films deposited by Pulsed Laser Deposition

    LaFeAsO1-xFx thin films were deposited successfully on (001)-oriented LaAlO3 and MgO substrates from stoichiometric LaFeAsO1-xFx polycrystalline targets with fluorine concentrations up to x = 0.25 by PLD. Room temperature deposition and post annealing of the films yield nearly phase pure films with a pronounced c-axis texture and a strong biaxial in-plane orientation. Transport measurements show metallic resistance and onset of superconductivity at 11 K. Hc2(T) was determined by resistive measurements and yield Hc2 values of 3 T at 3.6 K for B||c and 6 T at 6.4 K for B||ab.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

    Quantifying the impact of climate change on drought regimes using the Standardised Precipitation Index

    The study presents a methodology to characterise short- or long-term drought events, designed to aid understanding of how climate change may affect future risk. An indicator of drought magnitude, combining parameters of duration, spatial extent and intensity, is presented based on the Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI). The SPI is applied to observed (1955–2003) and projected (2003–2050) precipitation data from the Community Integrated Assessment System (CIAS). Potential consequences of climate change on drought regimes in Australia, Brazil, China, Ethiopia, India, Spain, Portugal and the USA are quantified. Uncertainty is assessed by emulating a range of global circulation models to project climate change. Further uncertainty is addressed through the use of a high-emission scenario and a low stabilisation scenario representing a stringent mitigation policy. Climate change was shown to have a larger effect on the duration and magnitude of long-term droughts, and Australia, Brazil, Spain, Portugal and the USA were highlighted as being particularly vulnerable to multi-year drought events, with the potential for drought magnitude to exceed historical experience. The study highlights the characteristics of drought which may be more sensitive under climate change. For example, on average, short-term droughts in the USA do not become more intense but are projected to increase in duration. Importantly, the stringent mitigation scenario had limited effect on drought regimes in the first half of the twenty-first century, showing that adaptation to drought risk will be vital in these regions

    Observation of PeV Gamma Rays from the Monogem Ring with the Tibet Air Shower Array

    We searched for steady PeV gamma-ray emission from the Monogem ring region with the Tibet air shower array from 1997 February to 2004 October. No evidence for statistically significant gamma-ray signals was found in a region 111\degr \leq R.A. << 114\degr, 12\fdg5 \leq decl. << 15\fdg5 in the Monogem ring where the MAKET-ANI experiment recently claimed a positive detection of PeV high-energy cosmic radiation, although our flux sensitivity is approximately 10 times better than MAKET-ANI's. We set the most stringent integral flux upper limit at a 99% confidence level of 4.0 ×\times 1012^{-12} cm2^{-2} s1^{-1} sr1^{-1} above 1 PeV on diffuse gamma rays extended in the 3^{\circ} ×\times 3^{\circ} region.Comment: 13 pages 3figures, 1 tabl
