-optimal saturated designs: a simulation study
In this work we focus on saturated -optimal designs. Using recent results,
we identify -optimal designs with the solutions of an optimization problem
with linear constraints. We introduce new objective functions based on the
geometric structure of the design and we compare them with the classical
-efficiency criterion. We perform a simulation study. In all the test cases
we observe that designs with high values of -efficiency have also high

Disturbances in the spontaneous attribution of social meaning in schizophrenia
Background. Schizophrenia patients show disturbances on a range of tasks that assess mentalizing or 'Theory of Mind' (ToM). However, these tasks are often developmentally inappropriate, make large demands on verbal abilities and explicit problem-solving skills, and involve after-the-fact reflection as opposed to spontaneous mentalizing.
Method. To address these limitations, 55 clinically stable schizophrenia out-patients and 44 healthy controls completed a validated Animations Task designed to assess spontaneous attributions of social meaning to ambiguous
abstract visual stimuli. In this paradigm, 12 animations depict two geometric shapes' interacting' with each other in three conditions: (1) ToM interactions that elicit attributions of mental states to the agents, (2) Goal-Directed (GO) interactions that elicit attributions of simple actions, and (3) Random scenes in which no interaction occurs. Verbal
descriptions of each animation are rated for the degree of Intentionality attributed to the agents and for accuracy.
Results. Patients had lower Intentionality ratings than controls for ToM and GO scenes but the groups did not significantly differ for Random scenes. The descriptions of the patients less closely matched the situations intended by the developers of the task. Within the schizophrenia group, performance on the Animations Task showed minimal
associations with clinical symptoms.
Conclusions. Patients demonstrated disturbances in the spontaneous attribution of mental states to abstract visual stimuli that normally evoke such attributions. Hence, in addition to previously established impairment on mentalizing tasks that require logical inferences about others' mental states, individuals with schizophrenia show disturbances in implicit aspects of mentalizing
Employing Knowledge Transfer to support IS implementation in SMEs
Information systems strategy is an increasingly important component of overall business strategy in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The need for readily available and consistent management information, drawn from integrated systems based on sound and upgradeable technologies, has led many senior company managers to review the business case for root-and-branch systems replacement. However, implementing new information systems (IS) is not easy and many projects fail or fall well short of expected outcomes. Key to successful implementation is getting the strategy right in the first place and then implementing it in a controlled manner to ensure the delivery of benefits. This article discusses three IS projects in different SMEs, where the UK's Knowledge Transfer Partnership scheme has been used to transfer relevant expertise from the university sector to help with strategy development and systems implementation. The experience has led to an outline method for IS strategy development for SMEs and guidelines for the adoption and adaptation of mainstream project management and software package evaluation tools. It is hoped that this will help other SMEs to achieve IS strategy development and implementation more effectively in terms of timescale, cost control and benefits delivery
Stream-field interactions in the magnetic accretor AO Piscium
UV spectra of the magnetic accretor AO Psc show absorption features for half
the binary orbit. The absorption is unlike the wind-formed features often seen
in similar stars. Instead, we attribute it to a fraction of the stream that
overflows the impact with the accretion disk. Rapid velocity variations can be
explained by changes in the trajectory of the stream depending on the
orientation of the white-dwarf's magnetic field. Hence we are directly
observing the interaction of an accretion stream with a rotating field. We
compare this behavior to that seen in other intermediate polars and in SW Sex

The accretion flow in the discless intermediate polar V2400 Ophiuchi
RXTE observations confirm that the X-ray lightcurve of V2400 Oph is pulsed at
the beat cycle, as expected in a discless intermediate polar. There are no
X-ray modulations at the orbital or spin cycles, but optical line profiles vary
with all three cycles. We construct a model for line-profile variations in a
discless accretor, based on the idea that the accretion stream flips from one
magnetic pole to the other, and show that this accounts for the observed
behaviour over the spin and beat cycles. The minimal variability over the
orbital cycle implies that 1) V2400 Oph is at an inclination of only ~10 deg,
and 2) much of the accretion flow is not in a coherent stream, but is circling
the white dwarf, possibly as a ring of denser, diamagnetic blobs. We discuss

A finite element based formulation for sensitivity studies of piezoelectric systems
Sensitivity Analysis is a branch of numerical analysis which aims to quantify the affects that variability in the parameters of a numerical model have on the model output. A finite element based sensitivity analysis formulation for piezoelectric media is developed here and implemented to simulate the operational and sensitivity characteristics of a piezoelectric based distributed mode actuator (DMA). The work acts as a starting point for robustness analysis in the DMA technology

Vector continued fraction algorithms.
We consider the construction of rational approximations to given power series whose coefficients are vectors. The approximants are in the form of vector-valued continued fractions which may be used to obtain vector Padeapproximants using recurrence relations. Algorithms for the determination of the vector elements of these fractions have been established using Clifford algebras. We devise new algorithms based on these which involve operations on vectors and scalars only â a desirable characteristic for computations involving vectors of large dimension. As a consequence, we are able to form new expressions for the numerator and denominator polynomials of these approximants as products of vectors, thus retaining their Clifford nature
