A fracture mechanics-based method for prediction of cracking of circular and elliptical concrete rings under restrained shrinkage
A new experimental method, utilizing elliptical ring specimens, is developed for assessing the likelihood of cracking and cracking age of concrete subject to restrained shrinkage. To investigate the mechanism of this new ring test, a fracture mechanics-based numerical approach is proposed to predict crack initiation in restrained concrete rings by using the R-curve method. It has been found that numerical results accord well with experimental results in terms of cracking ages for both circular and elliptical concrete rings, indicating that the proposed fracture mechanics-based numerical approach is reliable for analyzing cracking in concrete ring specimens subject to restrained condition.UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council under the grant of EP/I031952/1, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China under the grant of NSFC 51121005/5110902
GRB 030226 in a Density-Jump Medium
We present an explanation for the unusual temporal feature of the GRB 030226
afterglow. The R-band afterglow of this burst faded as ~ t^{-1.2} in ~ 0.2 days
after the burst, rebrightened during the period of ~ 0.2 - 0.5 days, and then
declined with ~ t^{-2.0}. To fit such a light curve, we consider an
ultrarelativistic jetted blast wave expanding in a density-jump medium. The
interaction of the blast wave with a large density jump produces relativistic
reverse and forward shocks. In this model, the observed rebrightening is due to
emissions from these newly forming shocks, and the late-time afterglow is
caused by sideways expansion of the jet. Our fitting implies that the
progenitor star of GRB 030226 could have produced a stellar wind with a large
density jump prior to the GRB onset.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

Bioinspired Multifunctional Anti-icing Hydrogel
The recent anti-icing strategies in the state of the art mainly focused on three aspects: inhibiting ice nucleation, preventing ice propagation, and decreasing ice adhesion strength. However, it is has proved difficult to prevent ice nucleation and propagation while decreasing adhesion simultaneously, due to their highly distinct, even contradictory design principles. In nature, anti-freeze proteins (AFPs) offer a prime example of multifunctional integrated anti-icing materials that excel in all three key aspects of the anti-icing process simultaneously by tuning the structures and dynamics of interfacial water. Here, inspired by biological AFPs, we successfully created a multifunctional anti-icing material based on polydimethylsiloxane-grafted polyelectrolyte hydrogel that can tackle all three aspects of the anti-icing process simultaneously. The simplicity, mechanical durability, and versatility of these smooth hydrogel surfaces make it a promising option for a wide range of anti-icing applications
X-Ray Flares from Postmerger Millisecond Pulsars
Recent observations support the suggestion that short-duration gamma-ray
bursts are produced by compact star mergers. The X-ray flares discovered in two
short gamma-ray bursts last much longer than the previously proposed postmerger
energy release time scales. Here we show that they can be produced by
differentially rotating, millisecond pulsars after the mergers of binary
neutron stars. The differential rotation leads to windup of interior poloidal
magnetic fields and the resulting toroidal fields are strong enough to float up
and break through the stellar surface. Magnetic reconnection--driven explosive
events then occur, leading to multiple X-ray flares minutes after the original
gamma-ray burst.Comment: 10 pages, published in Scienc
Exact Solutions to Sourceless Charged Massive Scalar Field Equation on Kerr-Newman Background
The separated radial part of a sourceless massive complex scalar field
equation on the Kerr-Newman black hole background is shown to be a generalized
spin-weighted spheroidal wave equation of imaginary number order. While the
separated angular part is an ordinary spheroidal wave equation. General exact
solutions in integral forms and in power series expansion as well as several
special solutions with physical interest are given for the radial equation in
the non-extreme case. In the extreme case, power series solution to the radial
equation is briefly studied. Recurrence relations between coefficients in power
series expansion of general solutions and connection between the radial
equation are discussed in both cases.Comment: 22 Pages, in LaTex, no figure, to appear in J. Math. Phy
Quakes in Solid Quark Stars
A starquake mechanism for pulsar glitches is developed in the solid quark
star model. It is found that the general glitch natures (i.e., the glitch
amplitudes and the time intervals) could be reproduced if solid quark matter,
with high baryon density but low temperature, has properties of shear modulus
\mu = 10^{30~34} erg/cm^3 and critical stress \sigma_c = 10^{18~24} erg/cm^3.
The post-glitch behavior may represent a kind of damped oscillations.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures (but Fig.3 is lost), a complete version can be
